Sudden surge in data use

BPanny
I've been here awhile

I recently experienced a surge in data use, 5 GB in minutes, leading to overage charges. I never go over a GB in a month and none of my apps indicated that they had used any more than the normal amount of data in the billing period. I reset my data stats every month on the billing date. The agent at the store was rude and condescending and said he had never heard of this issue in 15 years. Online searches indicate that this happens on a fairly regular basis and that Rogers provides little or no support in resolving the problem. Their solution was to try to sell me a much more expensive plan.

Did your devuce firmware update or did a bunch of apps decide to update in the background? Have you installed any new apps recently that might be using more background data than they should be?

No new apps. I only do updates manually when home and connected to wifi. All background auto refresh is turned off. Wifi assist is off as well. I have very few apps set to use cellular data and I check my data use frequently.

5GB in minutes is an app update or streaming or some other large user.  Here's my thread on the topic of minimizing cellular data usage: See all the steps I took in post 1 of that thread:  Check out the rest of the thread for additional information and useful links.

In the phone's cellular data settings you should be able to see what app or apps used that data, provided you didn't zero the cellular usage since that time in the cellular data settings.  I would suggest you don't zero the usage until after you can look at your bill/statement.  I'm with Chatr and I can see my usage as soon as it happens, but I don't believe you can do that with Rogers Post-paid - you have to wait for your bill?
