Today is Friday the 13th! A date that is synonymous with fright and terror and in the world of horror cinema we have been graced with numerous iconic slasher franchises, one of the biggest using that name as it's title. The top four slasher franchises, imo, are Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, and Scream.

Friday the 13th began with the vengeful Pamela Voorhees in 1980, setting the stage for the legendary hockey-masked antagonist, Jason Voorhees. Known for its creativity, summer camp settings, and suspenseful chases, this franchise is a slasher fan's delight. There are twelve movies total in this franchise.

Nightmare on Elm Street introduced a new level of psychological horror. Freddy Krueger, the burned and blade-fingered dream stalker, terrorizes his victims in their dreams. The series blends the waking world with nightmares, creating a unique and unsettling atmosphere that has made it a horror favourite. There are nine movies in this franchise.

Halloween is led by its iconic antagonist, Michael Myers. The original 1978 film remains a masterpiece of suspense, focusing on the silent and relentless Myers stalking his prey. There are thirteen movies in this franchise.

Scream is another gem from creator Wes Craven, known for his mastery of the horror genre. Ghostface, the series' iconic villain, uses pop culture and horror movie knowledge to create intense scenarios. There are six movies in this franchise.

These four slasher movie franchises have left their mark on the horror genre. Each has its own unique elements that have kept audiences enthralled for decades. Whether it's the summer camp frights of Friday the 13th, the nightmarish surrealism of Nightmare on Elm Street, the silent stalking of Halloween, or the self-aware suspense of Scream, these series continue to captivate and terrify viewers, proving that the appeal of a good slasher never fades.
