Rogers Dropping AMC

"Occasionally, we make changes to our channel offerings to reflect the evolving viewership trends of our customers. Starting January 1, 2020, AMC will no longer be available as part of your TV package. If you pay a separate monthly service fee for this channel, you will no longer see this charge on your bill as of this date. We understand that a change like this can be frustrating and we apologize for the inconvenience."

Netflix has The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul, but they're a season behind, so  you probably won't see new episodes for another year.  I'm a big fan of BCS..... Rogers TV offerings are diminishing rapidly.

@FH5 @OLDYELLR   and Prime has Fear the Walking Dead, but as mentioned they are a season behind.  What really ticks me off is we will be losing TWD in mid season and next year is the final season of BCS.

Why is Rogers now ridding itself of AMC????

This is crazy, first Ignite tv doesn’t add the adult channels, it cancels several other channels, now it is getting rid of AMC, that is an extremely popular channel!!! People are going to start going back to Bell and if AMC is removed so am I! AMC is an extremely popular channel!

I'm extremely ticked at the fact that AMC is going, thanks for taking it away halfway through the Walking Dead season! After my current deal I'm seriously thinking of going to Bell, we just got fiber in our building so I can get much higher upload speeds plus Bell has the channels Rogers is getting rid of and then some.  Get rid of channels, raise the prices 😠

We watch AMC and now it will be gone. <ShakesHead>

Trimming costs to improve the bottom line.

Come on Rogers, you should be adding channels not cutting them.

Please dont put this as defending Rogers.. But there may be a lot more at play here than we see (and Rogers likely isnt going to tell us).   I am just as upset at loosing Walking Dead.

One thing you have to look at, is the AMC side.

If you go back a number of years, some of you might remember on AMC, there was a bunch of stuff on AMC, saying that 'rogers was threatening to take away AMC, contact here to have your voice heard'.
What was going on at that time, was the contract for rogers to get the channel, was up for renewal.   And while AMC was trying to make rogers look like the bad guy with their stuff on the channel.. the part which wasnt being said, was AMC was asking for like a 400% increase for rogers to get the channel.
And this wasn't anything new for AMC either.. I did a bunch of research at the time, and apparently AMC was doing this with like 2/3 of the carriers in the US at the time/around that time as well

Its quite possible something similar is happening again.   And Rogers is not agreeing to the terms/demands of AMC.   It may not be happening at Bell as their contract may be still good for the time being.

@Gdkitty  Hopefully this will be temporary and an agreement can be reached.  When networks and carriers take away access to programming that people want, it just forces people to use 'other means' to obtain the programming.  In the end both the network and carrier lose.

Oh yeah.. i completely agree.
I live in an area where my options are rogers... or bell satellite.   No Fibe, etc.
So switching, is NOT an option in my opinion.
So what are my options to watch the show... not many legal ones..  (besides waiting for Netflix to MAYBE get it?)

I hope that something can be reached.

I'm bummed out. There are several shows we watch on AMC including the highly popular "The Walking Dead". Rogers just informed us in our monthly bill that the channel will be dropped in the new year. How nice. Which other channels can we look forward to being dropped in order to improve our viewing experience? Now I'm hearing rumblings of Rogers doing away with digital cable completely. Anyone here know of any future plans by Rogers to further improve our viewing experience?

On the day AMC does not appear on my tv screen Ma Bell will be installing a satellite dish the next day.

Eventually down the road, I am sure digital cable will be discontinued.
But like other things.. some are eventually inevitable.
Much like analog TV, it will disappear at some point..
Part of the issue, is the upkeep and everything to keep the technology going.  The cost to keep analog up and running was not worth the return.
Even regular digital cable, will start going that way.   There are very few companies still working on standard digital cable type boxes.. the development on them, etc.
Where IPTV is becoming more of the standard  on most TV providers now.

As for AMC, again take a look at my post above.
I am not happy at all with the changes either.  BUT there may be more doing on here behind the scenes.

My wife and I are retired. Tech is whizzing past us every day. If they do away with digital cable in the next few years what will replace it? Will we have to get an internet-able TV to connect to Crave or Netflix or Disney, etc. I can imagine the problems resulting from that switch. Young people are used to scrapping hardware like game consoles every few years so will likely expect to shell out for new 3d viewscreens too.

What will replace digital cable is Internet Protocol TV (IPTV).  Bell's name for this is Fibe and Rogers name is IgniteTV.  The interface is not that dissimilar to digital cable, but offers a lot more services (like one box for Netflix, Prime, YouTube, "cable TV", etc)  You don't need a "smart" TV.  Also there's voice control and other features. Look at the various IgniteTV threads on this forum.

There are some people who have issues with IgniteTV, but probably no more than with Digital Cable.

So I am not really a big fan of AMC, however I do understand that it could be one of my channels next (History, Discovery, Showcase, etc etc). I will sign petition.  Obviously no matter how many sign the petition you have made up your mind to drop this channel. I would love to see the data and analytics you performed to come to this decision. "Based on trends", I am willing to make a bet that AMC is in the top 50% of channels people watch the most.

My question to Rogers is .. "How will you compensate your customers? Many people including myself make decisions based on the content you offer, AMC is a major influencer. You are going to no longer charge those who've added this channel as a stand alone option, what about those who decided to pay extra for a better bundle because AMC was included? Replacing AMC with a Fireplace 2 channel is not a fair exchange.. how about HBO. What about those customers who chose Rogers because the bundle offered included AMC at a lower price than what Bell offered? What's your contingency plan to keep those customers?

You decided to cut AMC, that's really too bad. But I would like to know what your plans are to replace such an iconic channel? What are you planning on doing to keep your customers happy??

I too would like to see the data.
Problem is.. a lot of it is probably not public and threfore they dont have to show it 😞

But the data might show things.
Yes, AMC might be a high watched channel... on say SUNDAY evening. (when TWD is on)
But how are its watching statistics outside of those times?  I cant say I have ever really watched AMC outside of Breaking Bad or TWD.

It might not be worth the MONEY, for the amount that its watched.
(and rogers wont say what money they spend on the channel itself, etc... but in the previous re-negotiations with channels in the US, some of the US carriers did release numbers and AMC were asking for crazy amounts)

I switched to Rogers from Bell a few months ago as it was a comparable product for a lower price. However, by dropping AMC I will be losing TWD which is one of the few shows I watch, and I have to pay extra for CTV Sci Fi for most of the others. Seriously reconsidering my choice.

Re: Rogers Dropping AMC

@Gdkitty

I can't speak to what data Rogers used to base their analytics and trending on, but there are many studies online

https://www.adweek.com/tvnewser/the-top-basic-cable-networks-for-oct-2019/419694/

The statement by Rogers "..based on trending.." should be reinforced with some actual numbers. We don't need the raw data, but why not publish similar ranking details like we see in the survey embedded?

Regardless.. I would like to know what their plans are to replace the hole left by AMC.

In regard to everybody threatening/contemplating switching to Bell, what makes you think that they won't drop AMC when their contract is up? Of course Bell isn't dropping AMC right now, there is still term left on their contract.

Here we go, you sign up for their Ignite - then THEY decide what channels they can drop but offer no change in the billing. One of the main reasons I signed up was for AMC.  The notice is on the November bill.  Next thing you see will be the notice of higher rates to "serve me better".  Guess it's time to start looking at Bell.

We just moved and had the opportunity to change over to Bell.....what a mistake.  I did not sign the one year contract for Ignite TV so not binding in my opinion.  Not first time Rogers take networks away all the popular ones....I am heaving mad!  Will be looking into Bell after this weekend.
