Could be a problem with the Media Shrink algorithm, or the box may be just misreporting.

Whenever the box does something "unexpected", a good first step is always to reboot the box and see if that changes things.

Ive been having similar problems. The number of hours recorded should only be taking up 15% to 20% max, if that but it's showing 97% used. Makes no sense. Is there a problem caused by a recent update?

Occasionally the box will do what's called a "runaway recording".  It will keep recording a certain programme for a very long time. Find the (long) recording, delete it and reboot the PVR. What's the model number of the PVR?
