Can't permanently hide ROD1-ROD5 and Call Display channels

I can go through Guide settings and choose to manually hide all the channels I don't want to display or flip through. This includes the ROD1-ROD5 channels as well as Call Display channel.

But then after a few days or a week, something is gong through and specifically unhiding these 6 channels.

I go into the settings and hide them again. It works for a few days. Then something specifically goes and unhides them. And so it goes.

Why is there seemingly a policy of unhiding and pushing these channels on me? How do I specifically and PERMANENTLY hide these channels, channels which I will never, ever, ever use?

In particular, every time it unhides them, and I'm flipping through channels, you land on one of these channels and the received goes into la la land of complete slowness, and on these channels the channel Up and Down buttons no longer work so you're "stuck" here.

Re: Can't permanently hide ROD1-ROD5 and Call Display channels

@hoob  At a time where I am not going to drive my wife crazy, I will do some testing on those channels.

I like you am not a fan of these channels - I have no interest in them, and profiling a new play HD movie is not of interest to me - If I want to see a new release movie, I go to the theatre, as a senior and at morning before noon rates $7.50 I have little need for ROD. Haven't ordered a movie since the last time they gave me six free ones for being a loyal customer.

One possibility is that it may be like the subscribed filter that on reboots, it is lost.

The issue of slowness may be related to loading - it isn't uncommon that loading with ROD can be slow with the loading of new information - and when it does slow down, it is not uncommon that you will end up rebooting.

Like I said, I will do some experimenting at a time where my wife won't go nuts with me playing around.  She is the primary TV watcher in this house.  I just play and debug and try to find answers for myself and others, although  I do some watching.

Re: Can't permanently hide ROD1-ROD5 and Call Display channels

@hoob

First question - What channels was ROD 1 - 5 on?

I can't seem to find them anymore.

Second observation - When I went into hide channels, which by the way, I never really use, so I had to test this to see what happens, I was surprised to find that there were a huge bunch of channels marked as hidden.  I have never hidden a channel.

When I unhid them, I could go to the channel, but it just told me what the information was and that I would have to call in to order them.

Well, the outcome of my test on the call display -

after rebooting, the call display channel, which I had hidden in the settings, channel setup, hide channels, and had checked and it is now back again, and unchecked in the hide channels again.

So guess the ROD 1 - 5 are probably the same too.

Just one more case of odd programming, unless they really didn't want us to hide them, but that doesn't make sense either, because you can, it just doesn't hold on a reboot. So just one more case of odd things with the box, but certainly it is now down to a few compared to the updates of June and October builds.

Out of curiousity, I hid a few channels that I don't care about, and unhid channel 59, which is the same Your World This Week as you see on Channel 1.

These changes held with the reboot - go figure.

So in summary - my test shows that the call channel does not stay hidden after a reboot, and suspect that would be the same case for ROD 1-5 as you described it. As I mentioned, I can't even find them anymore.  I do know they were there, because they were just one more annoyance of things I would never watch.

I agree, this is VERY annoying.

Seems to me that every time they change the movie on the channel it becomes a new selection in the list of channels when you go into settings to block the ones you don't want. The blocking isn't based on the chanel number but on the movie title.  This is obviously just another marketing tool Rogers has come up with to try and entice people to pay to watch movies. Personally it's just one more way they are annoying me to the eventual point where I'll tell them to stuff it and cut the cord.

Just as an add to my comment. Right now in Kitchener it's Channel 115, 320, 330 and 428 that I have checked to have hidden.

Re: Can't permanently hide ROD1-ROD5 and Call Display channels

@Robbell Thanks for the channel listing. ROD 2 is on 203 - I did a test of marking them all, along with the telephone call app.  They were gone from the guide.

Then I did the reboot, and the 5 ROD channels and the telephone list channel was back again.

I wonder if there are select channels up and down the 999 stations that we cannot hide - maybe I will check at some point, but it makes me wonder if pay per view channels, the unsubscribed channels, the multiple ON Demand channels where you see the On Demand grid of shows also cannot be permanently hidden.

That is the only logic that I can see is that stations that are interactive like On Demand, and the Phone calls, where as channels that we have in our package, there would be no need for two way interaction.

Just thinking why they would have programmed it this way - only guessing, but if it is programmed this way, it would make sure that channels we want to pay for, even the ones we don't subscribe to are present by default, we can temporarily hide them, but when we reboot they all come back by default.  Could test it, but probably won't, I know this much anyway, so if someone ever asks about hidden channels coming back, this is the way to test what it probably is.

As a closing note on this one, unless I get bored and try to test what channels won't hide permanently:

My wife said, why do you even pay attention to little things like that - it is because I have had to deal with so many technological issues with Navigtr and other services, many messes up in my bundles and pricing, and hours of getting them fixed to a level I could feel fairly compensated for.

So I relate to what you are experiencing, because I have been through it all too, and yess it annoys me to no end that I have become an expert on the set top box and my services, because there has been little stability in good customer services, mistakes that couldn't be reversed due to miscommunication or misunderstanding, or just plain errors of someone clicking the wrong button, or not understanding how a grandfathered plan works.  And the constant changes in plans, pricing has also become tiresome.  I went 22 years and never changed my cable packages, other than adding TVO, finally going digital, and getting a PVR.  I left Rogers for 3 years due to a bad upgrade that took most of the GTA down area by area over a six month period, and I went Bell ADSL, then back to Rogers in my new neighbourhood because Bell didn't support as it was too far from the central station.

I have not changed up anything, and for quite a number of years, I would get a call, or I would enquire about something I wanted to change, and they would offer me bonus features for cell, cable, and Internet, and home phone, most of which I still have.  The only ones that I lost were when they "accidently clicked a change I didn't ask for, wiping out the option", or "I must have misunderstood - couldn't be that they did not communicate clearly even though I have them repeat over and over again, and know every detailed question to ask, it is amazing how many changes that I never asked for, just was asking for that I must have "accidently" said yes to.

But with lots of persistence on my part, I did get fair compensation, even thought they could not give me the package back, but with each time, I became more frustrated.

So I use the forum here to help others, to validate that we aren't alone, and to emphasize that we all have choices.  I would prefer to go back to being niave about all this stuff, just pay my bill, watch TV and enjoy my entertainment.

Is that asking for too much?

As I say often now, life goes on.  And why does it lose the hidden channels - who knows - somebody programmed it that way, or maybe it was an "accident" that nobody tested for.

Thanks for taking the time for that detailed response.

I was assuming the channels came out of the hidden list when the movie changed but could be that it is the re-boots.

Those channels must be either Nextbox, Navigatr or region specific. I can't find any of them with my SA8300HD SARA Guide.  From what I've been able to determine, it's just categorizing ROD pay-for-play movies which can all be found on the regular ROD channel #100 anyway.

Re: Can't permanently hide ROD1-ROD5 and Call Display channels

The issue is not a limition in the system, by accident, it is an intentional revenue play by Rogers.  They want you to spend money.  They can and should allow you to hide channels permanently but they do this on purpose.  Eventhough it is a complete pain for elderly people who get caught on these channels and a pain to the rest of us.

Clearly if we hide it, we are not interested in it.  If the porn can be hidden forever, the the Rod channels can be done as well, but greed vs. customer satisfaction and a great customer Experiance are NOT as important to them.  There has been as steady move away from customer satisfaction i.e. the dumbing down of the almost “Anywhere” app and the way it blocks you playing on a TV from your Mobile.

They need to fix their attitude towards the people that pay thier salaries.
