LTE-Advanced and VoLTE: Another Rogers First

On April 1st, 2015 Rogers will turn on Voice over LTE, or VoLTE, where available, giving customers with a VoLTE compatible phone clear, natural sounding voice and video calls. 

 

VoLTE (Voice over LTE) is the next evolution in wireless calling. The VoLTE technology platform allows users with a compatible phone to place and receive calls over the Rogers LTE network instead of the traditional voice network. Until today, only data was transmitted over the LTE network and voice calls were carried over the HSPA network.

 

Now with VoLTE, Rogers supports high quality HD calls and allows Canadians to:

  • Make and receive voice and video calls to and from other Rogers customers with VoLTE - in clear, natural-sounding audio
  • Place a call and stay at lightning fast LTE data speeds when you browse the web or watch videos
  • Connect quicker with friends and family (you get a faster call connection time)

 

Both VoLTE and LTE-A are examples of how we are striving to give customers access to the newest technologies and services that enhance their overall voice and data experience.

 

VoLTE allows our network to more efficiently transmit calls through a separate platform that places your call over the LTE network instead of the traditional voice network. LTE-A allows our network to more efficiently transmit data by combining different bands of spectrum to increase data capacity by creating a wider pipeline.

Interesting.

Big question comes down to then... HOW MUCH will it use? (guess it depends on which codec, etc)

 

With many plans containing UNLIMITED voice now, and only LIMITED data usage..

Might just stick with regular voice.

 

Do we know if there is a way to turn it off if we so chose not to use it?

Conversely to what Gdkitty said, do we still need to buy a voice plan?  Once VoLTE becomes pervasive shouldn't I just be paying for data?
