Port Forwarding With Rogers Wireless Home Internet?

Sparroo
I've been here awhile

I was looking at Roger's Wireless Home Internet plans (https://www.rogers.com/web/consumer/internet/wireless-home-internet) but can't find anything on whether port forwarding is possible with these plans.

I have Starlink right now which is technically faster and cheaper but you cannot port forward with it which is a problem for me as it's required for my work.

Hello, @Sparroo

We appreciate you posting your question to the Community!

I can understand how important it is to get the right service that will be compatible with what you need to work from home.

It may be possible to do Port Forwarding with Rogers Wireless Home Internet as the wireless antenna is directly connected to an Ignite WiFi Gateway inside the home using Ethernet.

You can check the following resources for more info:

I hope you will be able to gather some useful information.

Are you using Rogers Wireless Home Internet?  Does your Ignite Gateway connect to the cellular modem via an Ethernet connection?  If so, and you are not subscribed to any other Ignite services that are dependent on the Ignite gateway, then you have another option: disconnect the Ignite Gateway, connect another router of your own choosing in its place, and configure port forwarding on that device.

Thanks Tony. It is impossible to do port forwarding with the modem that comes with Rogers Wireless Home Internet. All those sections are blocked.

To solve the problem, i removed the Rogers modem and replaced it with an old Cisco EA3500 router i had lying around. The Rogers modem is now just a brick, useless piece of technology.

Re: Port Forwarding With Rogers Wireless Home Internet?

@bravepoint time to buy a new router or load OpenWrt.  That EA3500 hasn't had any Linksys firmware updates beyond 2014, so its well beyond time of being safe to use.  Here's the support page for that router:

https://www.linksys.com/support-article?articleNum=148482

Select Version 1.0 to see all of the associated firmware and software for that router.  There's only one version, don't know why they just don't display everything when you pull up that page.

Fwiw, DD-WRT doesn't support that router either, but, OpenWrt still supports that router.  Here's the page which lists the various routers supported by OpenWrt:

https://openwrt.org/toh/start

The EA3500 is number 839 on the list.  If you're planning on keeping that router running, looks like your only choice is to load OpenWrt.

What Rogers calls "Port Forwarding" is actually "IP Forwarding by Port". Rogers does not support forwarding calls to an external port to a different internal port.
Calls to external-ip:443 can only be routed to internal-ip:443.
