You must update your Rogers email account settings

I got an e-mail on one of my e-mail accounts this morning. Interestingly I only got it on one of our accounts, not the other three accounts that my wife and I have.

At first I thought it was phishing, but it appears that people who use certain e-mail clients (like Outlook) will have to reconfigure those clients for a "new password" (app password).  Webmail  doesn't appear to require the change.

The e-mail states:

Important: You must update your Rogers email account settings.

Protecting your data is as important to us as it is to you. Rogers is making several security upgrades and implementing a new authentication system to further protect you and your data.

Rogers requires you to update your email settings to continue using your email account.

It only takes a few minutes of your time to ensure you have uninterrupted access to your email.

There is a link as follows indicating the people who need to do this, as well as instructions on how to do it:

http://www.rogers.com/web/support/internet/email/442

Please excuse me if this is discussed elsewhere. I did try searching and didn't find a thread on this specific topic.

I've been here awhile

APPS can be compromised.  This is the way all email clients are going.  Google has already done it years ago but has a method to "Allow Less Secure Apps" so you don't need to do this.

The reason it's more secure is because in the APP you do NOT need to use your ACCOUNT password.  You go into the Rogers Membership Page, create a new APP password, and paste that into the APP INSTEAD of your normal password.

If you lose your device, or sell it and forget to remove the password... that person has access to your emails.  All you have to do is go into your Rogers Membership page, delete the APP password, and voila...  that device no longer can check your new emails.

I have setup for many customers...

Outlook - (generate password).

iPad - (generate password).

S6 - Edge - (generate password).

Then if someone has their iPad stolen then just go into the Rogers Membership area and delete the iPad password.  It leaves ALL the other devices, account login, etc alone.

It really is a better system for security.

The problem right now... it doesn't always work.  Rogers is splitting from Yahoo and right now the mail system is a mess.  Wait times on the phone over 2 hours yesterday.

I got through in about 5 minutes.   Unfortunately my mail problem was not, as I thought with the App password (on Safari) but... long story short a router issue.   Of course (partly my fault) I told them I was using iPad and when the transferred me to "tech support for the device" it was "cellular" not "internet" and so it took half an hour to figure out the problem.

Im Ok with App passwords as such (although in the, presumably rare, scenario quoted its not hard to go to web mail and change the user password(s).   What does annoy me is that, in the case of Outlook anyway, one is more or less forced to use the "remember password" feature, and so, in effect one loses the user password.   I guess thats a MS issue in not providing for two passwords.

I also note that since this has gone live, iMail very often has a couple of seconds of "server not responding" (I forget the exact wording), presumably the authentication server not the mail server as I never had this before.

I guess Im sceptical as to how much actual additional security i afforded by this in practice as opposed to in theory.

The current email problems have nothing to do with this.  The SMTP server is currently down and has been all day.  It's been flaky (pardon the technical jargon <g>) since some time on Sunday.

Then Id say its been very slightly flakey for a few weeks.

One of the problems I commented upon in another thread after I "updated my app password" was that the email imap or smtp servers quite often lost their connection or the folders would not synchronize.  The internet connection to Google etc. worked but you just could not send and the clients were not aware thinking it was other problems.

One of the symptoms of the dropped connection will be these messages when you try to send an email.

I guess the "flaky" connection issue persists.  I think it will be highly unlikely that this problem will be fixed through Rogers.

Rogers Hijacking

Whenever I sign out of my email, I find that my page is being hijacked by this page.

https://rogersmembercentre.com/rmcapp/remc.html#/signin

A message at the top says the following: A new and easy way to access your Rogers Yahoo email account. Please login with your @rogers.com or @nl.rogers.com email address and password. Using my email address and password does not take me to my webmail. It is absolutely useless.

I also have this page set up on my personalized Yahoo home page.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/weather

When I go there and click on the link to "Manage locations", I am once again hijacked by rogers to this page.

https://rogersmembercentre.com/rmcapp/remc.html#/signin

What gives rogers? I have no interest in signing in here!

https://rogersmembercentre.com/rmcapp/remc.html#/signin

Why am I being hijacked?

OAUTH2 also works properly with Google.  It doesn't with Yahoo.  I'll be glad when we leave Yahoo, as their service has other problems.

Hopefully, they're getting ready to move us off Yahoo.

It's been 4 months since I started this thread.  Just as an FYI, I have not made any changes to my Outlook for Mac 2011 settings.  No App Password yet.   I've learned not to rush into things and I'll probably wait until Outlook "fails" and then simply copy in the App PW.

I've also encountered the "login screen" instead of going back to the previous website when logging out of WebMail.  However, it only happens with the Master e-mail account, not my other e-mail accounts, and it doesn't bother me.  Since I'm usually finished my session at that point, I haven't bothered trying to login again from there.

@57  Thanks for letting us know - it doesn't surprise me at all - this is first Yahoo that we are talking about, then Rogers trying to make it work in a different way - I wonder how other ISP providers that use Yahoo are doing with this whole thing.

Thanks for the update.

I plan to stick around

I received the notice from Rogers to update my username@rogers.com email login for only one of my 4 accounts which I have set up in Outllook 2010.  I followed through with the update as instructed with no problems since then (several months).

There has been no additional communication from Rogers in regard to any of this, so I'm waiting to see if I need to take any action with the other three accounts.

I haven't had any issues with Windows mail client on my laptop either, i.e. I haven't updated the logins there either.

Fingers crossed...

@ramjetejmar:

Which link, who provided, in which post?  Looks like you got a redirect from the original link.  What is the original link and what is the post (message) number?

@ramjetejmar   Are you trying to update your Rogers email account settings for  a version of Outlook?

Try starting at this link:   Update Rogers Email Account settings

Choose the version of Outlook from the pull-down menu and try following the instructions.

If you get stuck come back here.

WHAT IS THE DEADLINE to do this ?

Re: You must update your Rogers email account settings

Hello @jand_ottawa,

I completely understand your concern regarding the changes to Rogers.com email settings. Ensure you have reliable and convenient access to your emails is very important.

To be safe we recommend updating your email settings right away, that way you will avoid running into issues down the road. A specific date was not given but if you have not updated your email settings please do so now.

If you run into any issues feel free to leave a post on the forums but it is also a good idea to read through this thread to see if you can find a solution to your specific issue.

I hope this helps!

Regards,

RogersTony

@jand_ottawa  As mentioned by others and by Tony, I can mention that as a person who has followed this thread for a while, I can summarize that:

1. There has never been a deadline stated.

2. As far as I know on the main account we have all had to make the changes.

3. If you are using Outlook and windows mail, these are well explained in the original links to the help page (the first one at the first page of this thread has never changed, and works for most to date.

4. Surprised to hear that there are some that are still not having to do this yet on your secondary accounts, but this is Rogers and Yahoo we are talking about here and email has not been a strong point for Yahoo for the last number of years.

I would agree, probably makes sense to go ahead and set those other accounts up - you need to log into the rogers portal for email under each user account - email address and current password and then set the passkey and apply it to those accounts in mail.

It may or may not come sooner or later, but personally, I would not wait, just go ahead and set it up.  We have never heard anything from Rogers on this topic, it has all been support calls, chats, and discussion here since the first emails notifications and this thread, so I don't expect to hear any further.

Frustration is inherent in this whole change over, it has been poorly done from day one and we have all had to work with it in each of our own ways.

Let us know how it goes.  There is another thread begun recently saying that something is going on with archiving old folders, disappearing and then gradually reappearing.

In my case, I have avoided all of this and just provided post - I went gmail long time ago, and ported all mail from yahoo to gmail and even my user name/address for myrogers is no longer the rogers/yahoo address.  Hope this isn't creating too much frustration for you.

So, I got another e-mail on this topic today.  It states:

Final notice: The deadline to update
your email settings is November 2nd

This is the third and final notice to update your email account settings. Rogers is making security upgrades to further protect you and your data. This requires your immediate attention.

You will not be able to access your Rogers email using Microsoft Outlook, Windows Mail, or similar software after November 2, 2017 if you do not update your settings.

If you have already made this change, please disregard this message.

Visit: rogers.com/email

So, the change will be implemented 6 months after the initial notice.  I have not made the changes yet - we'll see if I do before November or wait to see what happens...
