Re: Rogers Gaming & Streaming Lab

@RogersTony  I was able to run ping tests for both twitch and google for 5 minutes each and saw no intermittent issue with the ping. Attached are the upstream and downstream levels of the modem.

Re: Rogers Gaming & Streaming Lab

Hey @Koma,

Thanks for your reply! I'm happy that you were able to confirm that there was no packet loss. 🙂

If you are able to detect latency issues (over 100 ms) when running consecutive traceroutes over a period of 3 - 5 minutes to either Google or Twitch please provide us with the results of the tests so we can review it.

Looking forward to your results!

Re: Rogers Gaming & Streaming Lab

High ping jitter from modem to rogers routers

Hello @RogersAndy! I was sent here by Rahul from @RogersHelp on Twitter. We have already done some preliminary tests and concluded that signal levels are okay on the modem.

The issue I'm having is related to fluctuating pings to internet services (from 10ms all the way to 50ms). This causes heavy rubberbanding and hit reg issues while playing online games, specially BR+FPS type games that requires a lot of data back n forth. It is interesting to note that that the latency variance presents itself on the first hop from my modem to rogers infra, which tells me that something is going on with the service itself.

This is my modem:

Hitron CODA-4582

Hardware Version 1A
Software Version 7.1.1.33

I have the Hitron modem bridged to my EdgeRouterX (https://www.ui.com/edgemax/edgerouter-x/) which I use as the primary gateway (LAN subnet 10.1.1.0/24). The ERX is connected directly via 1GE cable to the modem.

All the traceroutes and ping tests posted below were performed directly on the EdgeRouterX.

1. Screenshot of your Upstream and Downstream levels.

gOZTRr4

huhYi5W

2. Here are some ping results
google.com
3GMfD9Z

A random public IP in Ashburn, Virginia -- I'm using this as the game servers I want to use are hosted in GCE us-east4 datacenters
xI3x2K8

as you can see the pings are all over the place. more info below

3.  Traceroutes

google.ca
dLOHVeb

twitch ingest yto
Q4XWLth

3.5: I also have a screenshot from the tool `mtr` https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTR_(software)

google.ca
OrrTEpo

Notice that the jitter becomes apparent from the first hop itself! Also notice that the stdev is 15-18ms across the board!

So I decided to run a standalone ping to the gateway IP @ 99.xxx.x.x (Privacy)
RcYAQqe
and as suspected the jitter is present. min=5.6ms max=63.4ms with mdev=12.4ms

I would really appreciate if I could get some eyeballs on this issue and resolve the latency fluctuations. Doing any real-time task like gaming/streaming or even just using a remote SSH session is a frustrating experience right now.

Thank you very much!

Re: Rogers Gaming & Streaming Lab

Hey @rajiteh!

Welcome to the community!

I can appreciate the concern regarding the increase in latency! Though it's important to know that Rogers is unable to action latency under 100ms on any hop within our network. I've reviewed the information provided however there's no evidence of an issue with the service provided therein. If at any point you do notice latency exceed 100ms consistently definitely let us know and we'd be happy to have it escalated for you.

Re: Rogers Gaming & Streaming Lab

I ran these ping tests right after I tried streaming. The stream was very laggy and had almost 20000 dropped frames. Once I completed these pings to google and twitch I quickly started up a stream again to see if I was still dropping frames. Unfortunately the problem is still not fixed. Also this problem is starting to affect online gaming and constantly disconnects me from online matchmaking.

Re: Rogers Gaming & Streaming Lab

Hey @Koma,

Thanks for posting the results of your test!

Don't forget to run those while directly connected via Ethernet and when your modem is not in Bridge Mode so we can properly troubleshoot and help you diagnose the problem.

Check out this article for more info!

My modem was not on bridge mode and I'm getting the same results on both wired and wireless

Re: Rogers Gaming & Streaming Lab

Rogers did mitigate some of the issues but SIP traffic is still junk.

I am guessing they prioritize gaming traffic as things are better but not perfect.

Re: Rogers Gaming & Streaming Lab

No one has been in contact with me or his tried to resolve my issue the problem still persists. I formatted my computer used a wired connection and also multiple different devices and still have not seen any difference. I just dont understand why rogers is so unstable. Here are my new trace routes to twitch and google.
