Modem unable to change settings, tells me to use the Ignite app

ultrasuperman
I'm here a lot

I need to change the channels on my wifi and a few other things. I've had this problem for awhile but factory resetting would fix it, now no matter what I do I will only have "edit" options for a few minutes, after that it locks down and says to use the app but the app has none of the settings I need. Is there a way to enable the settings?

Unfortunately, no.  Years ago, Comcast made a decision that Wi-Fi settings would be best managed by the gateway itself.  If those settings get locked, there is no way to regain manual control.

Usually, the gateway makes sensible, optimal channel choices, so this is not always a bad thing.... but I still firmly believe that we should have the ability to override any automatic settings.

Comcast may have also taken these measures because enabling certain settings (or making certain Wi-Fi settings changes) can cause the gateway to become unstable.  I know from my own testing that configuring a 160 MHz channel width on the 5GHz band can cause problems, and making sporadic random Wi-Fi settings changes can cause the gateway to crash/reset.  Incidentally, with the latest firmware on the XB8 gateways, they eliminated the option to set a 160 MHz channel width on the 5 GHz band.
