Ignite 250u upload speed peaks at ~11 Mbps

I signed up for the Ignite 250u tier yesterday and it was instanned today. I am very pleased with the punctuality of the installer and the ease of installation.

 

Background:

I'm replacing a TPIA 25/10 Mbps DSL service and my network consists of a 24 port Cisco 2950 1Gbps switch and a Fortinet Fortigate 60D-POE Router/Firewall. The Rogers Modem (CGN3) is in Bridge mode. My Mac Pro is connected via CAT 6 at 1 Gbps Full Duplex.

 

Now to the problem, my download speeds exceed 250 Mbps on nearly every test (see Speet Test results below) I've run but my upload speed seems to top out around 11 Mbps. One of the main reasons I switched was the 20 Mbps upload speed Rogers claims to offer with this tier. I do a lot of remote work and 20 Mbps upload speed would make my work day a lot more enjoyable.

Results: Latency 10 ms - Jitter 4 ms - Download Speed 311.53 Mbps - Upload Speed 10.70 Mbps

 

 

I'm wondering if my account may have been incorrectly provisoned. Any ideas?

I just got off the phone with Rogers customer care rep and she confirmed that 10 Mbps was the maximum upload speed available in my area at this time. According to her, Rogers provisions 10 or 20 Mbps upload speeds based on capability of the node.

Can you:

1.  flip the modem back into Gateway mode,

2.  connect the MacBook Pro directly to the modem,

3.  log in to the modem,

4.  navigate to the DOCSIS WAN page,

5.  copy the downstream and upstream tables and paste them into this thread.  Those tables contain the RG-6 signal levels and signal to noise ratios which may be of some interest. 

6.  When that is done, run a speedcheck to see what you get for results in that configuration and post those results as well.

7.  When complete, flip the modem back into Bridge mode.

 

Just to make sure that I have your network correct:  Modem --- Fortinet Fortigate 60D-POE Router/Firewall --- 24 port Cisco 2950 --- Mac Pro.  Is there any port throttling set in either the firewall or switch that might affect the upload rate?  Do you have other ethernet cables that you can try for test purposes.

 

Usually when these cases arise, its a matter of an external cabling or connector issue, or possibly an ethernet cable issue.

 

What modem do you have, the CGN3 or newer CGN3ACR?

Thanks for the quick reply. I have a CGN3 modem. Nothing in my network would impede upload speeds.

I took the modem out of bridge mode as you suggested and connected directly to my laptop with a new CAT 6 cable and verified the laptop is on the 192.168.0.0/24 subnet did another speed test with the same result as previous.

 

I appreciate your insight on this. I am a senior systems admin for a big telco myself and am versed on all OSI layers BTW but have no experience with DOCSIS.

The target levels on the downstream are 0 dBmV for signal strength with +15 dBmV to - 15 dBmV range.  The signal to noise levels are normally in the 36 to 40 dB range.  The upstream signal levels which are the output levels back to the Cable Modem Termination System are normally in the 36 to 40 dBmV range with three upstream channels running.  The max output levels for three channel operation are at 51 dBmV.  Approaching that or going beyond usually equates to severe cable issues, which causes the modem to start dropping channels to maintain comms with the CMTS.

 

So, hmmm.  The only thing that comes to mind at this point is the possibility that your area is not provisioned yet for higher upstream speeds.  You would need to call tech support to enquire about that possibility.  I have read some comment elsewhere that indicated that there were two or three upstream levels that could be set depending on the node capability.  From a signal aspect, there appears to be no reason to be seeing less than 20 Mb/s upstream.

I also have the ignite 250u package with the new Hitron CGN3ACR modem/router set up in gateway mode and I constantly get upload speeds of 10-11 mbps (wired or wireless). I should be getting higher results using rogers ookla speed test. Here are my DOCSIS WAN Downstream and Upstream Overview:

While not completely out of spec.. your signal levels  are a bit on the low side.  Its possible that is part of it.

So does that mean there is nothing rogers can do to improve that signal strength or is this at my end?

I suspect that a tech visit would result in replacing the external cable or connectors.  But, your current signal levels and signal to noise ratios should support full data rates in both directions.  Has the upstream rate always been low, or has that dropped over time?  If this was a new service, I would suspect that possibly your area is not capable of handling the full 20 Mbs upstream rate just yet.  If that is the case, and you have never been able to run at that rate, call tech support and determine what the area is rated for and ask when Rogers expects to have it running at full rate.  If in the course of the conversation it turns out that yes, the area can support 20 Mbs, then its time for a tech visit to determine why your rates are only half of what they should be.

When I was on hybrid fiber 150, I was capable of getting uploads speeds of up to 16 mbps on the Hitron CGN3, but as soon as I upgraded to ignite 250u even on the Hitron CGN3 before I replaced it for the CGN3ACR, my speeds dropped to 11 mbps upload. So I just don't get how the upgrade to ignite 250u caused the upload speeds to decrease and max out at 10-11 mbps.
