Re: Hitron Wifi Range is Awful.

Hello @bingewatcher,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I can definitely relate to the frustration caused by a weak Wi-Fi signal.

Have you attempted any troubleshooting so far? There is a plethora of information in this thread. Keep an eye out for posts from our Resident Experts @Gdkitty@Datalink and @gp-se as they offer some valuable information.

Keep us posted!

Re: Hitron Wifi Range is Awful.

Regardless of what these advertise.. the built in on them, is not much better than any mid range wireless router.
Which in the same way, advertise how 'good' they are.

Really in the end, beyond any interference, any internal antenna modem (regardless of the # of antennas) will be worse than external.

EG:  I went from an N based internal 3rd party wireless.. was slightly better than the older hitron.  But when I went to an antenna based N router.. i was getting full bars in places where I was only getting 2 before in the house.

Really with these units.. they are included in the price of the modem rental.  Use them for what they are, if the range and features work for you.  But if you need better, your really better off bridging it, and using a 3rd party router.

Re: Hitron Wifi Range is Awful.

Here's my problem: the range USED TO BE BETTER. I have contacted Rogers a number of times and attempted to explain that I used to get full coverage in my entire house, but recently it has become worse. They tried to explain it away with interference from other houses (I live across from a school that is empty at night, and two elderly neighbours on either side who I doubt are up all night crushing Fortnite), but I expect that it's the wretched Hitron modem/router.

I might have to take off to Teksaavy

Hello @estevito,

Congratulations on your first post and welcome to the Rogers Community Forums!

With so many of our devices relying on Wi-Fi to connect online, it's important that you have a strong and consistent signal so I really feel your pain now that yours has become degraded.

While it is very true that Interference and Attenuation can wreak havoc on a wireless signal, it is rather strange that it was working totally fine up until recently. We have a few questions we'd like to ask before troubleshooting.

  • Can you describe what specific issues you are facing, are you experiencing slow speeds while connected via Wi-Fi or does the connection keep dropping on your devices?
  • Do you notice fewer signal bars on your devices? If yes, is it only happening in certain areas of the home or throughout?
  • When do you first recall noticing issues, were there any changes to your setup around this time or the addition of any new wireless devices (cordless phone sets, wireless printers or wireless sound systems, etc)?

We look forward to your response!

Re: Hitron Wifi Range is Awful.

I spent a number of hours with your tech support and all they told me was, "that's how routers work and there's nothing we can do about that." It felt like they were blaming a number of other reasons except for the router itself. They said my 1700'sq house was "a mansion" and that it was simply a limitation of any router. I call BS.

  • The router has been replaced within the last two months, after the problem started. No change to range
  • There are lower bars downstairs or even in the next room on the same floor
  • There has been no change whatsoever when the reduction in range happened.
    • Not in wireless printers, no wireless security, no cordless phones, no wireless speakers
  • At the time when the range got worse (all of a sudden) I was offered a faster plan. So now when I'm right next to the router, the speeds are great! But who sits next to the router to do any internet-ing??
  • I'm most frustrated that Rogers did not acknowledge that the problem was likely the Hitron router (like mentioned by others here) and there was a blame to other things like environmental circumstances (none of which changed).

Teksavvy has similar plans with better routers where I can get the service I USED TO HAVE with Rogers.

Re: Hitron Wifi Range is Awful.

Any of the all in one routers, are about on par with your <100$ routers.. they are not very good.

While interference, etc can be a big part.. the quality of the wireless to begin with makes a big part.  And the Hitron and the others similar just cant push on decent size houses.

Going to teksavvy.. really wont help much though.

Their main devices they are providing right now, are both Hitron units, and are MODEMS only.  No wireless, etc at all.
You would need to acquire your own 3rd party router to go with it.

In the end, you could do the same thing with the rogers service.
Bridge the modem to 3rd party router.
A good option now a days as well, would be to bridge to a MESH network type system.

Re: Hitron Wifi Range is Awful.

Well, considering the fact my Sagem modem from Bell worked flawlessly for 2 years before I switched to this thing, I would say that any excuses for the Hitron modem are just that, excuses.

Re: Hitron Wifi Range is Awful.

Hello @brianq103,

Welcome to the Rogers Community Forums!

I can imagine how annoying it must be to only start experiencing issues with your Wi-Fi after switching to the Hitron Modem. =(

There are numerous factors that can affect Wi-Fi performance in your home. Ensuring the modem is placed in a central location in the home is one of the most important factors when it comes to Wi-Fi signal penetration in your home.

Is the modem installed in the same place where your Bell modem was installed?

Can you confirm if you are connecting mainly to the 2.4G or 5G wireless network?

Have you tried doing a Wireless site survey using a Wi-Fi Analyzer to see if there is congestion from competing networks on the Wi-Fi channel you are using?

We look forward to your response!

Hi Tony, the modem is in the exact same spot as the Bell modem was. I try both frequencies, but as you might expect, the 2.4G works better. I didn't do a wireless survey with an Wi-Fi Analyzer but Rogers tech support did have me go place to place with my iPhone using the Ookla app and they did whatever they do to make it as good as they could, including trying different channels. I've also rebooted the modem more times than i can count, as it does seem to have a temporary improvement after I do that. Meanwhile, I rebooted my Bell modem exactly once in 2 years and I could get full strength on my neighbor's porch across the street. The Hitron Rogers modem is inferior in every way to the Sagem Bell modem. That is a fact.
