Hitron CGN3, Xbox and NAT

Hi, I recently moved to Rogers, and am now the proud renter of a Hitron CGN3.

 

However, I am unable to set it up such that I can have 2 xbox 360s with 'open' NATs.

 

With my previous Bell Aliant modem, I set the uPNP setting on, had both of the xboxes on dynamically allocated IP's, and both Xboxes reported that their NAT was 'open'.

 

When I repeated this setup with the Hitron, both Xboxes reported a NAT type of 'moderate'. I assume that the Hitron implementation of Upnp is not top notch.

 

I am able to port forward to one of the xboxes, which puts that one in the 'open' state, but that doesn't do the second xbox any favours wrt xbox live connectivity.

 

I have attempted to setup a 'port triggering' solution, with dynamically allocated ip's, but get stuck with 2 moderate nats once more. Unfortunately I am not sure what port triggering is about, so this may not have been a valid approach.

 

I have called Rogers support desk, who put me through to a specialist team. The specialist team said that this was possible to set up with port forwarding to both xboxes, and for a mere $129.99 plus taxes, they would be happy to do this for me. I declined as that seems rather pricey. I didn't think it was possible to port forward the same ports to separate IP addresses, so hadn't tried this approach. Of course when I did try this approach, the router would not allow me to setup the port forward to the second xbox, due to 'overlapping ranges' (no surprises there then).

 

Is what I am attempting to do impossible with this router, or is there some setup that I have messed up, or not tried?

I would set one console to use the standard ports, and the second console to use any of the other ports listed in that XBox panel.  You could then assign static IPs to each XBox, and set up the port forwarding, or, enable UPNP, although personally I discourage the use of UPNP.  I prefer to know what changes I'm making in the router/modem settings instead of letting UPNP do what ever it wants to do.

Gaming on PC / Xbox One Online connection issues rocket Wi-Fi Modem

 

So this has been very frustrating for me, basically I tried forwarding the relevant ports on my router in order to get the games to work correctly in multiplayer on PC / Xbox One, and this didn't work so after a lot of effort I was able to use the DMZ feature to get it working, however I can only input one IP Address at a time, so if I want to play games on my computer I must set the IP address for DMZ to my computer, and if I want to play on Xbox One  I have to do the same thing.

 

Is there a better solution so that I can have as many devices as I want working at the same time?

Thank you for posting your concern in the Community. Indeed, unable to find any multiplayer games or can't make them work correctly can be upsetting. The issue could be related to IPv6, you can switch your gateway modem to the IPv4 only mode and try the multiplayer games. You can follow the instructions posted by @Datalink in Message 20 of the multiplayer games thread. 

 

Keep the Community updated on the outcome.

Thanks for your reply but unfortunately that doesn't help. I tried setting to IPV4 but that made no difference. Also it's irrelevant because he says it's a problem for EA Games. The games I am trying to play are not EA Games.

@SF6 if you want to run multiple devices / consoles for gaming, you will have to buy a router that supports multiple consoles.  The problem that arises is when two or more devices attempt to use some of the same ports.  ISP issued modems usually won't support that type of use.  This isn't a Rogers issue on its own, but one that you will see with other ISP's as well.  

 

Asus routers with Merlin's Asus-wrt loaded will support multiple consoles.  Netgear's R7000 I believe will do the same.  Have a look at the following Google search results for:

If you're running gigabit service, the Asus RT-AC86U with Merlin's Asus-wrt firmware would do the job.  Just depends on the budget.  The 86U is a bit pricey, $269.99 at Bestbuy.  It has a 1.8 Ghz processor which will support gigabit rates with various functions running.  Fwiw, there is a long thread within the Merlin Asus-wrt firmware forum that deals with multiple console support.  Just a matter of finding in within the following forum:

Note that the XBox update from November 2017 has a provision to use different ports instead of the default ports.  I would have a look at the ports required by the pc and the ports that are available with the XBox and see if you can separate the two devices so that they use different ports.  If there are any ports that do overlap, you would have to run a router to support that situation.

Xbox LIVE, NAT, and Teredo

 

Hi all,

 

I've been a Rogers customer for several years now, and I currently have Rogers Ignite 60 with a Hitron CGN3 modem.

 

About two months ago I started having network issues with Xbox LIVE, no changes were made on my end that I'm aware of.  Let me list the full details and troubleshooting steps taken:

 

About two months ago, I started getting the following error message on my Xbox 360 E console when I would be in a game or app for several minutes and would then exit back to the Dashboard: "Some Xbox Live content is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. Status Code 8007274d".

 

Looking up the error code, this is apparently a Profile issue, so I ultimately cleared my console's cash several times and also deleted my Profile from my console and redownloaded it, with no results.  I also ran a Network Test and everything came back aces, so that didn't seem to be the issue either.  Note I do connect via wireless.  To this day still, if I'm in the YouTube app for a while and then exit, as an example, I'll still get this error.  It even occurs if I watch a DVD movie.

 

I can simply click to quickly reconnect to Xbox LIVE from the Dashboard though, so this is a nuisance issue and I simply carried on for months accepting it.

 

Yesterday, I formatted my PC and clean installed the new Windows 10 April 2018 Update, which all went smoothly.  While checking settings and re-configuring things, I went to Settings>Gaming>Xbox Networking, and it's telling me that "Teredo is unable to qualify" and that my "server connectivity is blocked." Sometimes instead of mentioning Teredo it simply tells me my NAT is set to Moderate (and I believe it's always been Moderate with my set up).  Note my PC is connected to the CGN3 modem via an Ethernet cable.

I tried all the relevant steps on both pages and no dice.  Remembering my Xbox 360 Profile issue, I went back and ran a Network Test on the console, and now it's specifically telling me my NAT is Moderate, I can connect to Xbox LIVE but will have issues with Multiplayer games and voice chat; I've never seen this in a Network Test on my console before.  It also suggested I confirm that UPNP is on in my modem and that Port 3074 is forwarded.

 

I logged into my modem and everything appears to be configured properly.  UPNP is on, and it seems Port 3074 is already forwarded; it's even called "Xbox."

 

I contacted Rogers Technical Support last night, and the tech I spoke with informed me there is no way to change the NAT on this modem, or even the more advanced modems they have with newer, better Internet Packages.  From what he said, and from poking around the web, it seems the only real option is to set the CGN3 into bridge mode and use a third party router (which I do not have).

 

Are there any other steps I can try?  I just find it odd everything was aces for years and then two months ago, something magically changed.  Does anyone know if a new firmware update for the modem was pushed around this time (The firmware on said modem is currently 4.2.4.11)?  Otherwise, perhaps something changed on Xbox LIVE's end?

 

Note I presently do not Multiplayer game or use voice chat over Xbox LIVE, and I currently have an Xbox LIVE Free membership, so this isn't critical for me to solve at the moment, but if I ever go back to it or pick up an Xbox One S down the road, this will need to be resolved.

 

Also note the only items that connect to my network are my PC, my Xbox 360 E console, my iPhone SE, and occasionally my PlayStation Vita.  I'm not trying to run multiple consoles, as I see most of the existing threads on this board with similar issues are about, and I've tried using one device at a time with the others off, and still my connectivity issues are persisting.

 

Thanks in advance for your posts, and if you need any additional info, please ask.  Also note I'm not a networking expert, so I'll likely need step-by-step instructions on any suggestions to try.
