Good morning Community,

As I mentioned in a post two days ago, we have received the next firmware 2.0.10.20 from Hitron. We are currently running initial testing on this version and will push it out to participants in the firmware trial program as soon as it passes initial testing.

However, while running these tests, we discovered abnormal behavior with ICMP and are awaiting feedback from Hitron today to asses how this will be addressed. As soon as I this is confirmed, I’ll update the change log with the correct version information and start pushing it out.

In parallel, we are still working on the following high priority items. In some cases below, I requested affected customers to reach out to me via private message. If you do so, please include your modem MAC address in the subject line (even if we exchange messages daily) as there are a lot of you reaching out to me daily 🙂

UDP Packet Loss

The investigation for what has been reported as UDP packet loss is still ongoing. We have deployed a probe at one fellow forum member on both a CODA-4582 and a CGNM-3552 to collect additional data. We are actively working with Hitron and Intel on the results observed.

Based on what we know so far, in most instances UDP packet loss is coupled with higher uplink usage in the area. Although the impact is noticeable in specific logs (League of Legends), the root cause for the perceivable impact (while playing) is likely related to bufferbloat (see next issue).

Bufferbloat

When comparing the performance of a CODA-4582 to a CGNM-3552 in the same network conditions, the CODA-4582 consistently reports higher bufferbloat when tested on DSLReports.

Update April 12: The solution for this problem will come in two folds. It will require a change in software which will possibly be included in 2.0.10.27 but more likely in 2.0.10.28 and a change in network configuration.

The network configuration change is not compatible with the current firmware so this change will only come after a vast majority of the modems are running the new code. We are however looking at a way to make the change only for specific modems to support testing in the community.

Update April 22: This problem seems resolved in firmware 2.0.10.27

5 GHz WiFi Low range for channels 36 to 48

Lower WiFi channels on the modem have a much smaller range. This is due in part to the limit imposed by Industry Canada to maximum transmit power.

Furthermore, the current automatic channel selection (auto mode) tends to select the lower channels when in similar load conditions.

Workaround: manually select higher channels (149-153-157-161)

Update April 22: The channel selection algorithm has been improved in firmware 2.0.10.27

Loss of OFDM Channel Lock

Under some RF conditions, the modem fails to lock properly on the OFDM channel. This typically result in variable performance.

Update April 12: This problem is resolved in 2.0.10.26T2

List of connected device does not get fully populated

This is a known issue that has been tracked since firmware 2.0.10.13. We are making improvements at every firmware but it is not a perfect system.

The situation is worst after a reboot or firmware upgrade as the list gets reset and must be repopulated as devices renew their DHCP lease.

NAT Loopback not working for wired clients

When setting up port forwarding to an internal server, it is possible for a client on WiFi to reach the server using the external IP/port. If the client is on a wired interface, it doesn't work.

Update April 12: This problem is resolved in 2.0.10.26T2 (not confirmed)

LAN Counters not working

Some customers reported that LAN counters (especially in bridge mode) are reporting inaccurate values.

This problem has been reported to Hitron for investigation.

Unexpected modem reboot

Some customers reported their modem reboots unexpectedly. We have also seen this behavior in our lab.

Update April 12: This problem is resolved in 2.0.10.26T2

Missing SC-QAM Channels

After a reboot, some modems are missing SC-QAM channels. A fix has been implemented in 2.0.10.26T2 to address this behavior but it has not corrected all scenarios.

Investigation continues with Hitron.

WiFi Survey

The WiFi Survey functionality in firmware 2.0.10.26T2 (and possibly before) reports incorrect SSID names.

Guest Network

When connecting to the Guest Network, an error message is displayed "only allow DHCP client to use this wireless".  This has been reported in firmware 2.0.10.26T2.

Update April 22: This issue has been resolved in firmware 2.0.10.27

Update May 2: It seems this issue is not fully resolved and still experienced by some users

Future Planned Improvements

The following are items that we are working on in parallel of the above.

  • Improvement in WiFi speeds
  • Improvement in latency / bufferbloat

Can one of you please comment on my post as it would be nice to know if you are aware of these OFDM issues and when they can be resolved. It is pretty annoying to have your modem connection drop off in the middle of things.

Have you tried to swap out your modem?  For the vast majority of people this problem was resolved with the .24 firmware.

After a day of testing with 0.27 with two online games, I am still experiencing bufferbloat. The latency in games is much more stable but I am still experiencing packet loss and substantial spikes on Rogers nodes, just much less frequently. I can also confirm that I also got a score of D on the bufferbloat test on dslreports. When I connect to a VPN I am able to maintain a stable connection with 0 packet loss. If there's any thing I can do to help, point me in the direction and I'll be happy to provide some info.

Can you elaborate more on the VPN part?  Are you saying that if you play a game over the same physical rogers connection but with your VPN connected then there are no packet loss problems?

Re: CODA-4582 - Open Issues for Investigation

I'm here a lot
When I connect to ivpn which is a paid VPN service, I do not disconnect or experience high ping in games at all. When I use MTR to measure packet loss the results show no packet loss. I haven't tried the bufferbloat test with it though. I connect to their Toronto server, and get about 50ms avg in games, sometimes peaking up to 100ish. It is the same physical connection, using the same networking hardware.

Re: CODA-4582 - Open Issues for Investigation

Received .27 today its been working great. Ping is better in the games I tested and I am finally able to remote play on my ps4 over internet. I did get a few disconnects from battle.net every few hours on previous firmware hasn't occurred yet but only tested like 3 hours , will continue testing.

On another note for some reason some devices that have a gigabit port(PS4, Sisters laptop) only show a green light(100M) on he modem vs the orange (1000M) although speeds are above 100M. doing a reboot and reconnecting sometimes brings up the orange one but after sometime reverts to green. With my laptop it works fine.

What cables are you using and how long? What does the modem status page say for those ports?

Re: CODA-4582 - Open Issues for Investigation

@Suhaib10 just to note, you're the second person to report an issue with port speeds and LED colours on the 4582 over the last two to three days.  My first reaction was that this was a possible port controller problem which would require a modem swap.  Now  I'm starting to wonder about that idea.  In the other case, only one port out of four would run at Gb/s rates, with the other three ports running at 10/100 Mb/s according to the LEDs, but, I don't know if a speedtest on those ports also confirmed the slower data rates thru those ports.

Has anybody noticed on firmware 2.0.10.26T2/2.0.10.27 that their modem interface does not show an OFDM carrier active despite the downlink LED being light-blue which indicates a lock onto an OFDM carrier?

If anybody meets the criteria above, can they please run a speedtest on DSL Reports here and post what their downlink bufferbloat was?

I'm reading the feedback based on firmware 2.0.10.27 and I see a couple of people saying that their downlink had decreased,  I'm wondering if they're affected by the same issue.

@Alex4161 @mozerd Do you fit the criteria above?

When I lose the OFDM channel, my speed for downloads is under 1 mb/s and my upload speed is not to bad.  The light still stays purple/light blue.

Hm... When it doesn't show that I'm not connected to the OFDM carrier my downlink speeds reduce to 600-800Mbps instead averaging under 1mb/s like in your case..

In my case, I'm not sure if my modem is connected to an OFDM carrier. I'm treating the issue I described above as an interface bug (i'm assuming I'm still connected to the OFDM carrier). However, I'm starting to believe this may not be the case. I'll see what I can do.

Re: CODA-4582 - Open Issues for Investigation

@Telek Don't think its the cable I used Cat5e even tried 6 no luck. The Cat5e works fine with my laptop shows gigabit.

@Datalink I doubt its a physical issue since I'm pretty sure that it worked fine on .26. I'm only on 100u so speed test would be a bit useless. But even on the Green Led(100M) I still get above 100mbps speed( once got 170ish down).

Like on my PS4 if I reboot it during initial boot its orange but after a minute or so it switches to green.

Re: CODA-4582 - Open Issues for Investigation

@Suhaib10, if you take a device with a gigabit port that is known to be in good working condition, along with the ethernet cable, that is also known to be in good working condition, and you swap it to another port(s) where that modem port only shows 10/100 Mb/s (Green LED) then the conclusion has to be that the port controller isn't working properly for some reason.  You could run a factory reset, and/or change operating mode as in Gateway to Bridge or vice versa and check the ports.  If at the end of the day, that the factory reset didn't work, I would simply swap the modem at the nearest Rogers store.  I wouldn't fight with it.  Either it works as it should, or it's swapped out.

The PS4 specs indicate a 10/100/1000 Mb/s port.  The laptop could have a 100 Mb/s port.  That wouldn't be unusual depending on the age of the laptop.

I too had this issue where the coda would only recognize the 10/100 speed. So I went to my pc's network settings and forced the gigabit speed and the modem went to 1000m. Speed. Try doing that and see what happens

@RyzenFX, I have not observed the behaviour you describe

For me on the .27 firmware my throughput consistency for Download and my Latency number of 30ms is disappointing and apparently is my new normal for now -- based on numerous tests ---- so I am hoping for some further firmware tweaking.

change your DNS servers, it sounds like routing through Rogers is causing your issue. You can use Open DNS, Google DNS, or download DNS Bench and see what servers are the fastest for you.

On .27 and I haven't really noticed any big difference in anything.

Maybe webpages seem to load faster? Speed consistency is not really improved, and my ping is still bad when maxing out the connection.

Ping in general not really much better, if not slightly worse, and more lost packets in ping plotter.

That is all. Hoping for more improvements soon. 🙂

I am in St. john's area in newfoundland.  Not seeing much improvement here either.  Twitch for example is unwatchable.  no idea what the issue is.

You won't see much improvements in NFL, I am in N-B.

What's the issue with your twitch is just keeps loading? and what's your package?

I was on the 70u package but upgraded to the 250u package late last week.  Twitch buffers alot.  And to the point I have to refresh the page.  Its me not the source I have confirmed that
