Ignite TV - Slow WiFi Speeds

forumuser201
I'm here a lot

500mbps ignite internet is at 30/20 wifi, >500mbps ethernet

Hey, we are on the ignite 500/20mbps ignite TV plan which was installed recently. The only problem we have is that the router is giving 30/20 wifi speeds, while Ethernet is more than 500/20 (what we are supposed to be getting). In addition, Google Wifi (not in bridge mode, yet) says it is getting the correct Ethernet speeds, but even the devices connected to Google Wifi only get about 60mbps down.

Why do you guys think this is? There are about 4 active devices, in the same room as the router. I know Ethernet is much faster than wifi, but wouldn't wifi be at least 100mbps?

@Json2  The problem with Wi-Fi is that only one device can transmit at a time on a channel.  If a large percentage of the available airtime is being consumed by devices with poor, slow Wi-Fi connections, even those on other Wi-Fi networks that are in range and share the same channel, then you will still experience poor Wi-Fi performance even if your device is in the same room as the Ignite gateway.

For more info on how Wi-Fi works and what can slow it down, check out these articles:

I presume that you have also power-cycled the Ignite gateway, just in case something is causing it to slow down and not forward network traffic as quickly as it should.

Thanks

How can I fix it? It seems to only creep up whenever ignite TV box is being used.. Regardless if it's wired or wireless

That doesn't make sense.  A set-top box normally only consumes 10 Mb/s of Internet bandwidth, 25 Mb/s if you are watching 4K content, and the box itself is not even capable of moving much more than 100 Mb/s.  (100 Mb/s over its Fast Ethernet port and I once measured 136 Mb/s over Wi-Fi.)

If you see Internet slowdowns, whether the set-top box is connected via Wi-Fi or my Ethernet, that suggests that you might not have enough Internet bandwidth for your needs.  How many devices do you have connected to your network and how much Internet bandwidth do you have?

It is still also possible that you have some severe Wi-Fi performance issues that you need to fix

Try calling into Rogers tech support to see if they can see any issues with your in-home network with their tools.

In my home, I can have three set-top boxes streaming and a high-bitrate YouTube video playing on my computer, and I still don't see any noticeable performance degradation at all.  I also have more Wi-Fi bandwidth than I do Internet bandwidth.

I signed up for gigabit

# of devices - 2 laptops, a few cell phones, a few wifi cameras, printer, ignite TV box, smart TV

That should not put much of a load on a 1Gb connection, and a single set-top box DEFINITELY should not have any impact whatsoever.  However, your Wi-Fi installation may still need a tune-up.

I would contact tech support and have them look at the quality of all the Wi-Fi connections in your home, from both a signal strength and a data rate perspective.  They can also check the signal levels to your modem and run tests to see if any other issues are slowing down your Internet connection.

Sure!  Log into your gateway, go to "Gateway > Connection > Rogers Network", and then highlight and copy both the Downstream and Upstream stats, and optionally your CM Error Codewords stats as well, as a single selection.  You should then be able to reply here and paste the stats in a table format.

I've been here awhile

Me too, exactly the same situation, and I'm in a 2 bedroom apartment.

Re: Ignite TV - Slow WiFi Speeds

Hello, @JPicker.

I appreciate you joining this discussion, and welcome to our Community!

Slow WiFi speeds can be bothersome; we can help troubleshoot it for you. We'd need more details to better understand the issue; please answer the following:

  • What's the speed of your Internet package?
  • What speed are you getting on a WiFi connection?
  • What speed are you getting on a wired connection?
  • What's the modem's model?
  • Where's the modem located?

For optimal WiFi performance, the modem should be in a standing/vertical position at least one meter above the floor and should have enough clearance around it. Also, please try checking the WiFi speed on more than one device.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers,

RogersMoin
