Yahoo Homepage is Disappointing: Its so American Focused.

I plan to stick around

I have finally reached my boiling point with Yahoo as the Roger's homepage. I'm Canadian and would love to see more Canadian and World content available. The Today banner is loaded with probably 90%  US content if not more and I'm really tired of reading of the same struggles the USA are facing every single day. The US news in a Canadian market should be choice as world news not that main focus. Even the choices to customize the home page to our country and the world are limited.

Why do we have to have a home page that is so American focused while I spend more time googling Canadian content then I do on the Yahoo home page?

I would hope that a company such as Roger's would be more customer focused in meeting the needs of its Canadian customers.

Hello @baynewen,

Thank you for your post and welcome to the Rogers Community Forums!

I can appreciate your desire to see more Canadian focused content on your Homepage. Seeing the same old news stories about American content can get super annoying especially when most of it doesn't even concern you.

The Community Forum is a great place to voice your complaints or concerns, we take customer feedback seriously. I am certain there are others in the Community who may feel the same way as you do, feel free to join the conversation!

You don't have to use Yahoo.  I used Yahoo homepage for years but eventually chose another (Google) as my homepage.   At one point with Yahoo  you could select the content you wanted.  I'm not sure if that is an option now but you can check in the settings or set whatever webpage you want.

Although each person has their own taste for news, Yahoo is not a very good place for real news. It's like looking at the "newspapers" (tabloids) at the supermarket checkout.  To each his own.

I also use Google Canada for some of my news, along with The Guardian, The Star, The Globe, National Post websites.  In this way you can get a broader spectrum of news.

https://news.google.com/?taa=1&hl=en-CA&gl=CA&ceid=CA:en  If you sign in, you can tailor the news page to your liking.

https://www.thestar.com/

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/ (subscription required for more than 3 articles)

https://www.theguardian.com/international (Good for a non-US viewpoint)

http://nationalpost.com/ (subscription may be required)

There's also: https://www.pressreader.com/

As mentioned by @jays77, many websites allow you to personalize your selections if you don't mind giving away some personal information, or allow cookies, etc. You can also select whatever website you want as your own browser home page.

The OP does not state what browser they are using. I have my browser (Firefox) set to a blank home page and new tabs to also be blank.

That's what I already do is check out other websites and pinned their RSS feeds to my homepage however more often than not the feed fails its just tiring waiting to see which ones will work each day. So I now I ignore the Roger's homepage and have bookmarked my favourite news sites.

I have used Chrome and Firefox for my browser and it make no difference. My Oldest son in a Network specialist has has been in the business for almost 20 years  he is my go to guy. But he hasn't bothered with the Roger's Homepage in years.

I just think that for the average user Rogers could have found a more comprehensive partner for their Homepage which most users default to.

I don't think I have ever used the Rogers or Rogers Yahoo home page - I use a search engine interface (google at the moment) with no feeds on the page at all.

If I want news, I will go to various sources, such as @57 mentions.  I have never liked having some unknown algorithm determining what is fed to me, whether it was before my full knowledge of targeted material, or now that I know what many cookies are feeding at me.

So my home page is a good old fashioned, blank search engine page - no company based feeds for me.

I use the search engines - I use a few and focus on my questions at hand, without the distraction of corporately determined suggestions of what I may or may not want to see.

Just a suggestion, but a quick look at the rogers powered by Yahoo site, I found a mix of international, Canadian, Royal Wedding, political issues from around the world, definitely not that much Canadian comparatively to the International mix, and a lot of "sponsored stories"

In my case, very little is targeted at any of my interests because for over 3 weeks now, I have been killing all targeting cookies, analytics, and so forth using Ghostery add ons, and even my google searches don't know how to target me anymore - location sales adds are generic for Ontario, GTA, even US as they don't know where I am, although they still are drawing that information from somewhere for location as I do get a map of local services.

But reality is as we have learned Yahoo/Oath, is an independent company, nothing to do with Rogers as they tell us, so they do what they want, probably using their cookies to help guide the feed information, more than the fact that it is Yahoo ca or rogers.

Sometimes even clicking a link that comes up in a search engine can hijack your home page and search engine and it's often a pain to undo it. I would not be surprised if Yahoo is one of the culprits.

The Internet is there to serve you, not vice versa.

Agreed.

Mainly I think its a disservice to the customer that a Canadian Internet Provider such as Rogers defaults their homepage for the average customer to Yahoo.

Most people do not have the skills to change this and were paying for a service that doesn't meet the needs of most Canadians in my opinion.

When you login to Rogers Webmail, you are taken to your e-mail in a new tab, however, when you log out, you're taken to the Rogers/Yahoo "home" page. It simple to avoid if you want, just close the tab instead of logging out. (at least that's how it works for me)  I usually prefer to logout though, which is one extra step and closing the Rogers/Yahoo tab is now "automatic" for my muscle memory.

As the OP mentioned in a later post, he has his favourite news websites bookmarked and it's easy to change the home page in any browser, so there's no need to ever go to the Rogers/Yahoo "home" page.

I also used to have Yahoo.ca News as my home page many years ago, however, it's become unrecognizable and I now have Environment Canada Weather for Toronto as my home page. It loads quickly too.

It's easy to change your home/startup page/button under settings or preferences, whatever, in your Browser.  It's often best to go to the page you'd like to use as your home/startup page and then save it under the settings/preferences.  I doubt that "most people" who use a computer can't handle that.

Thank you...thats good advice.

I have no problem doing that for myself, but I'm complaining on behalf of the average customer who cannot or does not know how to do these things.

I just think that Rogers should be aware its not meeting the needs of most people. I don't see why the average customer has to think outside of the box when they aren't computer literate or not super users.

Obviously I'm not making my point effectively but many people that I know hate the default homepage of Yahoo and are upset that they are paying for a sub standard service in respect to the Homepage.

Anyway I'm done. But thank you for your suggestions I will pass them on to others that I know.
