What exactly are third-party charges?

These are charges for content like apps, games, music, and books from third-party storefronts such as Google Play (for Android users) and the App Store (for Apple users) that you can charge to your monthly Rogers bill. These services require explicit consent and authorization before you make a purchase to your account. For one-time charges, a typical authorization would require you to click a button on your Rogers wireless device to confirm consent. For subscription services, a ‘double opt-in’ is required to confirm consent which means you'll get two opportunities to confirm your choice to proceed.

Here are some recommendations on how to manage your third-party apps to help avoid unwanted charges to your monthly bill:

  1. It’s always important to review the Terms & Conditions before registering for any apps. Here are some things to consider:
  •           Is it a one-time purchase or an ongoing subscription?
  •           How many times will you be charged per month and how often will you receive messages?
  1. Review your bill each month, including the third-party charges section, to ensure everything is correct and that there aren’t any unexpected charges listed.
  2. Educate your family members about third-party charges. If you have children with a mobile phone, take the time to explain third-party charges to them and the costs that can come along with unwanted or accidental purchases. They may respond reactively to in-game credits without fully understanding the charges associated with them.
  3. Keep your phone in a safe place and keep it locked when not in use. This helps to minimize the risk of another person using your phone without your knowledge or consent.
  4. If necessary, Rogers can block third-party charges on your account. Please reach out to our Customer Service team to make this type of request.

I've been visiting

Hi @RogersYasmine

As of January 2023 Rogers is doing away with third party charging. I have searched all over but cannot find the reasoning for this. Can you give some insight as to why Rogers is stopping this? Now all my subscriptions I have to put my credit card in.

Thanks Amanda

Greetings @Vitoamanda!

Great question, thanks so much for bringing this up in the Community. 🙂

I did look into this matter further for you but unfortunately I was not able to confirm if this was a decision made by Rogers, by Google Play or perhaps a joint decision.

A few things to note:

  • Customers will continue to be able to purchase Google Play content and subscriptions via alternative payment methods (i.e. credit card, PayPal).
  • As we wind down Google Direct Carrier Billing, the option to apply charges to your Rogers bill will disappear by January 23rd, 2023.  For customers who have never set this up, the option was removed by Google as of October 3rd, 2022.  For monthly subscriptions, once DCB has been removed, customers will be notified via the Google Play storefront alerts that a new payment method is required.

If I receive any additional updates, I will post it here in the Community.

Thank you,

RogersYasmine
