There may be a more affordable Lumia on the horizon... Lumia  650 : http://www.phonearena.com/news/Microsoft-Lumia-650-Saana-allegedly-pictured-could-become-Microsofts-...

I Plan to Stick Around

Well I went and did it! After reading and contributing to this long thread, I finally realized that a subsidized Lumia flagship phone through Rogers was never going to happen. So, I took my Rogers Lumia 920 and went to Koodo. They happily unlocked my phone for free and, three days later, I now have an unlocked phone for the first time. It feels good to be untethered and free from Rogers! I'm currently on a 750/750/45 plan: 750 minutes of daytime calling, 750 mb's of data and $45 a month. It's not as good a deal as in the US, but it's more than enough for me and at a much better price.

In the next few months, I'm going to save up my money to buy a newer unlocked Lumia. I'd love a 950XL but I just can't afford a grand up front. If I want to stay unlocked I'm going to have to settle for a cheaper phone. In my case I'll keep an eye out for a good deal from Expansys.ca or the Canadian Microsoft store and buy a 640 XL (one of the many great Windows phones Rogers refused to carry). Maybe I'll look into a 650XL if it comes out.

In any case, thank you Rogers! Your maltreatment of Windows Phone fans has opened my eyes to a new way of looking at smartphones.

@grapemancaCongratulations!

Wow they unlocked your phone for free? No fee? hmmmm I'm going to go looking online for deals.

Sounds like a good game plan! Have you considered some of the older Lumia devices such as the 930 or 1520? I've been looking and have found some decent devices for sale on eBay for around $300-$400 and you get a flagship phone albeit a little older but the specs are still solid.

Expansys.ca is a great site! Shouldve bought a 1520 on there when they had the 32GB devices for sale instead of the AT&T variant which is 16GB with no wireless charging support.

If you want to make your phone feel like new I recommend the latest build of Windows 10. I put it on my 920 yesterday. I downloaded the Windows Insider App to my phone, and selected the "FAST RING" option. Wow I am impressed! Amazed how smooth it runs on a 3 year old phone! Still has some minor bugs, but I'm willing to live with this version as my daily driver.

All the best!

B

@brandonjbarnard  If I register for the Windows Insider Program ( to experiment with Win 10 upgrades on my older Win 8.1 phone), will it start pushing unwanted updates to my Windows 10 computers?

Re: Lumia 950

There is a problem with the available optional updates that are presented to Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 users.  The update to Windows 10 is enabled, instead of it being disabled.  Microsoft has said, "Oops, sorry".  So, if and when you run Windows updates,  you have to go in and ensure that the Windows 10 update is disabled, and then run the updates as you would normally.

@Mediaman

No, I don't believe it will. I think it will only do that on your PC if you registered for the insider program.

If you register for the fast ring of the windows 10 build it will push updates automatically to your phone. I'm not sure about the slow ring.

@Datalink

@Mediaman is referring to the windows 10 mobile on the phone, not on windows 10 for PC. He is concerned that if he does the update on his phone that it will affect his PC.

Re: Lumia 950

Yup, you're correct.  I misread the last part of his post.  I was thinking about the unwanted updates to Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 pc's.

Thanks guys. I see now you need to register with an outlook account, so I think I will leave good enough alone and not risk any unwanted pc updates. Besides, Microsoft doesnt exactly have a good reptutation for even the final public versions of its operating systems , let alone the beta/test/preview/insider versions !!

@Mediaman

Yes to do the windows insider you need to register to be able to get the windows 10 mobile previews/updates.

I have been holding off updating my PC. I will update it to windows 10 once Threshold is released next month and when Cortana is enabled for the Canadian Market.

@Datalink - No worries! 😄 Good to know about the updates though!

Installing win10 on your phone will have no effect on your PC.

The mobile insider program is separate from the PC insider program.  Signing up for one will not get you into the other.

@Lurker ,

There may indeed be two seperate insider programs but I just find it odd that that they have:
- a common sign-in page : https://insider.windows.com/Home/Index
- use a common outlook.com account
- are completely integrated on the registration page check box selections ie
---Developing Windows apps for PCs, tablets, and phones
---Developing games for PCs, tablets, and phones
---Developing apps for Microsoft HoloLens
---Developing devices with IoT Core
---Using Windows for your company

I dont see any way to sign up for one vs the other.. and you need to sign in when running the app on a phone.

Non-issue for me as I wont register for either one - just dont trust it!

You have to set up applicable devices separately to gain access to the preview versions. As this is a Microsoft service you need a Microsoft acccount.

Usually, with a preview program you need to go in with eyes wide open. Generally, it's a beta testing program, and shouldn't be used on production machines and devices that you depend on.

I was on the earlier developer's preview for Windows Phone, and those were quite stable, and I really enjoyed them. The current Windows 10 Mobile preview program is something I held off on. However, I will be updating my Lumia 1020 as soon as the final version is released for the preview program-- I won't wait for the official firmware update from Rogers. There is a point where it would be foolish to wait for perfectly fine features.

I was on the develper program for Windows 10 Desktop, and while there were times I thought about dropping out, I stuck it out as I wasn't really affected by the bugs. Currently I'm content now to wait for the official versions and I'm off the program. There is also an XBox One preview program (harder to get into as one has to be invited by a current member), but I don't want to work through bugs while I use the XBox.

Again, for the preview programs you have to specifically set up each device to enroll it.

Actually the 950 and 950XL will be released sometime in November. The Windows 10 Mobile OS will be available for existing Lumia Devices starting in December.

Re: Lumia 950

if you register for the insider program on mobile, it has nothing to do with the insider program on PC, it stays on your phone, The builds are starting to come along pretty good now, A new build will be released this week that should be almost finished product, maybe a couple lingering minor bugs. It is running very smooth and fast on my Icon right now.

Windows 10 Mobile should be finalized in the next couple of weeks and the 950/950XL will be available sometime in November via MS stores in Canada, the phones sold at the store will work pretty much anywhere except cdma like verizon and such, they are dual sim phones and support all bands on canadian gsm carriers.

Re: Lumia 950

Just to comment on your previous comment.

I am a windows Phone specialist, well as a SME I make it a point to know every phone OS we support. I do know alot about windows Phone 8.1 and Windows Phone 10. Speaking to one person who may not be as familiar happens, but don't take it to heart. I am here to help

I use a Windows Phone 640XL Dual Sim using Windows Phone 8.1 and i also have another running Windows Phone 10 but i prefer the 8.1

Remember Windows phone has only like 2% of the market share and I agree with you we need to offer alot more support. Since Microsoft started making the phones themselves, (which sadly has ended due to Microsoft Writing down the 7B dollars they bought it from Nokia for) Microsoft still offers alot of good phones, IMHO the 640XL was the first of many and if alot of developers get on board then the newest ones should get alot more support.

Don't give up, everyone i speak to I mention these great phones, and their awesome power.

My battery on my 640XL being used all day long for sms and internet and calling lasts a whopping 6 days before i get the low battery warning. So i am definetly a fan.

I know you expect alot of support from us, If you get me on the phone you will not be disappointed, I love the Microsoft Phones, and do my best to support them, ask alot of the MODS here I have worked with most of them, they know my passion is knowing the phones 🙂

Best of luck with your MS phone and I know you will enjoy it

Yes i always recommend buying them outright from Microsoft if Rogers doesn't offer it.

I got my 640XL outright for 400 shipping included. Fantastic phone and 5.7" screen I was blown away!

🙂

Thanks EhmTeeEhf ! I appreciate your support for the WP community and your endorsement of the 640XL. Now that Rogers and Microsoft have forced me to buy an unlocked Windows phone, I'm saddened that I'll never get a 950XL. However, if the 640XL is a decent phone but still affordable, maybe I won't feel like such a second class citizen.

That being said, I will never go back to Rogers. I've moved over to Koodo last week because of this thread; I don't think I'll ever look back.

Re: Lumia 950

I am glad that Rogers is having a couple of Windows Phone Experts.

Yes Windows Phone only has a market share 2.6%, Iphone is only 13.9% everything else is Android. (BB is less than 1%)

If the phone companies would offer a Windows Phone, and advertise it thje same way it is done for Samsung and Iphone, people would get it.

Marketshare for WP will not grow if it is only for sale at the Microsoft Store.

I want to get the phone really  bad, but I don't think I can afford it.

@EhmTeeEhf  Thanks for the information, I have been seriously considering a Windows phone as my next phone, as I love Windows 10, and have played with the surface tablet and the phone on 8.1, 10 on my laptop before it bricked my obsolete hardware - beware of an upgrade if it doesn't have uefi (I think that is correct) bios; - 2-3 year old computers (not a cheap last years model), will generally have this.  If you have old hardware, look up on google on how to turn off fastboot options and when you do that make sure you restart, don't just turn off, because it goes back to the saved hibernation file.

Glad to hear someone talking about the microsoft phones and devices on 10 and 8.1

Windows 10 TH2 release is coming along nicely and should be released to normal users in the 1st week of November, The next major update would be the Redstone builds which should be coming around springtime 2016.

Also for Windows 10 Mobile the TH2 release is also coming along very nicely and the latest build is just fantastic with only some minor bugs, its almost RTM time for Windows 10 Mobile which i also expect to be finalised around the first or second week of November ready to be loaded onto the new 950 and 950XL, cant wait till i get my 950XL, very nice phone and with great specs. if you dont like the look of the back, custom backs from Mozo will also be available in leather and plastic.
