why is WAP2-PSK A LOT FASTER than WEP?

I've Been Around

Hi:
I am using the High Speed Extreme package  My modem+router is the SMCD3GN  interface.

originalyl, I had it configured as WEP for wireless. And I noticed the speed was just CRAWLING.

I changed it to WAP2-PSK last night. And the speed is imprvoing significantly. I am polling about 20MB/s on SpeedTest.Net. I noticed the obvious improvement in speed as well.

I dont have that much expertise in cryptography. But I do know that WAP2-PSK requries  more bit length than WEP for sure, then why am I seeing this significant improvement in speed?

Any guru can help to explain and help me learn a little more?

Much appreciated.

Thanks

I'm Here A Lot

WEP is the oldest type of encryption and thus is much slower than WAP2

see here for a more detailed explanation.
