phone receiving & sending weird texts?

I've Been Around

about two weeks ago i was having a conversation with someone and i received a bunch of chinese characters in a text. she said she didn't send them and sent me a screenshot to prove so.

i forgot about it, but today while texting someone they asked me why i sent them a bunch of chinese characters but i didn't. she sent me a screenshot and it was pretty much the same thing.

what is this? is it a virus?

i have an iphone 5, if that helps.

I'm going to reverse course on my earlier reply. While it's definitely an encoding issue, it was thought to have been isolated to AT&T users, but since we are on the Rogers boards, it's obviously not so.

Here is a great explanation, for those inclined to want to know exactly what the issue is. Credit goes to the poster on that site.

Hello lindsaym,

It isn't something that I have heard of before. Are you sending the messages using iMessage or a 3rd party texting app? Has anyone else experienced an issue like this?

Thanks,

Re: phone receiving & sending weird texts?

Yesterday I was having a conversation with my boyfriend by text and he received Chinese characters too, sent from my iphone. It was creepy and weird. He has a galaxy and I have an iphone 4.

Hello Etosha

If you go on the Apple Community forums, u will see many threads on this. It seems that even Americans are getting weird Chinese letters and symbols in text messages. I would just ignore it and continue the conversation with your boyfriend.

Re: phone receiving & sending weird texts?

My Mom and I are.both on Rogers.. she has a s6 and I have a s7.. we both get these reply messages - usually 2 back to back - after sending each other a text.. doesn't happen all of the time... but is very weird.. here is the text..

Re: phone receiving & sending weird texts?

Hi @Wildoat3,

Are these official Rogers phones or are they non-Rogers unlocked devices?

I don't know the technical details but basically some emoticons/emojii are being misinterpreted somewhere along the line. Whether it's cross carrier text messages, cross platform text messages, iMessages vs. SMS, etc., I am not sure but you will find that text/iMsgs sent without emoticons/emojii will never have these wierd characters.

You can probably google it to get more details; but possibly it's due to one platform adding new emoticons that the other platform (or older OS) does not have.

My phone has done it a few times as well.. so far 2-3 times in last few months when texting a contact (most recently a minute ago). I send a text and almost instantly receive this Chinese character text back (same one listed on comment above posted recently). So far it's been the same contact each time. I have an official Rogers phone, Samsung S4. Believe this contact also has Samsung S4/5. We both live in Ottawa. Why would it happen like that? (Not sure I get the emoticon explanation as it appears to be an auto reply..that the person it's "from" didn't actually send) ?

Husband phone lg3 and my iPhone 5s just did the same thing we run on chatr using Rogers network. It's pay as you go! I text husband and got a response back 浥獳攠攠漠ㄲ㈶㌳㠱㈷攠獵獵敥摥搮 he is working so I know it wasn't him. I googled it it's Chinese but even in their language it makes no sense!

I have the same problem. Someone gets a text in Chinese (separate from texts I have actually sent) and then they take a screen shot to show me what was sent.

Re: phone receiving & sending weird texts?

I have the same problem, yes. I use a SAMSUNG GALAXY 6 though, not an iPhone. I'm texting from my SMARTPHONE, not an oapp, when it happens. It's happened 3-4x, to two different friends, several months apart.

Re: phone receiving & sending weird texts?

This just occurred when I sent my daughter a text. I am using an iPhone 5se and she is using a LG G5.

There was also some mention on the web that an emoji in the text may trigger the issue, so try to mention that to your contacts.

I have figured this out. So basically, when some devices are having reception or signal issues, it would seem that this message comes through. It's a confirmation message that the last message you sent got through. It shouldn't show up in your conversation at all but it does, not sure about that. But basically when converted to UTF-16 all of the hex gets bunched into groupes of 4 likely due to some kind of file compression. To convert it back you just chop it into two for most of the 4 character blocks. E.g. 7475 becomes 74 75 (properly formatted to 0074 0075) so you go from having 瑵 (this is 瑵) to having tu (which would be tu in UTF-16)

So basically if these are continually happening either your phone's sms app needs to be cleared or you should pay attention to how much signal you have before sending an sms.

Hope this clarifies everything for everyone.

By the way what the full message usually translates into is "message to 1xxxxxxxxxx succeeded" with the x's being the number of the person you're messaging, so I wouldn't go posting the outputs on many forums incase someone knows whats up 🙂

I should mention that this isn't actually an apple specific problem whatsoever. Best guess? The tower is compressing a send recept and phones don't know how to decompress it.

Hi,

I just purchased the Google Pixel 2 XL from Rogers a couple of weeks ago and today the same thing happened to me. Initially, a friend of mine sent me a text and I didn't respond right away because I was busy but she had followed up saying "is this still your phone"? I thought she was overreacting to the fact that I didn't respond right away but she then sent me a screenshot of the conversation. It showed that my phone had responded to her with Chinese letters! I had no record of this from my end.

Is my phone hacked?

@nkurtycz: Here's a previous thread discussing the issue and why it happens.
