I was told by tech that that hitron CGN2 had a firmware update. maybe you should see if yours is up to date.

Got the CGN3 back. Port forwarding is actually working, which is great. 9 downstream channels, 3 upstream permanently bonded. Wireless still great.
However, a new glitch discovered - I am unable to change default gateway password.... Weird

How did you do the factory reset? I'm having the same problem but I do not know how to do it.

Here is a link to the Hitron CGN3 user manual:
https://s3.amazonaws.com/modem.manuals/CGN3_UG_v1.1_2013-08-16.pdf
From page 25 of the user manual, paragraph 1.7:
1.7 Resetting the CGN3
When you reset the CGN3 to its factory defaults, all user-configured settings are lost,
and the CGN3 is returned to its initial configuration state.
There are two ways to reset the CGN3:
Press the RESET button on the CGN3, and hold it in for ten seconds or longer.
Click Admin > Device Reset. In the screen that displays, click the
Factory Reset button.
After the operation, The CGN3 turns off and on again, using its factory default
settings.
The reset button on the CGN3 is the recessed button on the back of the modem, just above the 5 ethernet ports.
