Last year Rogers announced that it will be using the American IPTV platform X1. Does this affect any of the current cable television customers? Will current customers automatically be updated to this new platform or will this be in addition to the current cable service?

Will the X1 IPTV service use the existing cable connections that Rogers has or will it require a new communication medium?

After some searching around I found a newspaper article that says the Rogers IPTV service will replace traditional cable television service by 2019. So it sounds like this is not simply an additional service similar to how Bell has Fibe TV and Satellite TV. Really looking forward to this IPTV service. Can't wait for more information from Rogers! 🙂

Theoretically, the Nextbox 3 (Cisco/Espial) as well as the Nextbox 4 (Technicolor) can both run IPTV, so a software build of whatever is going to run with Comcast can be done if they choose to keep old inventory in place, but for sure, forcing everyone over to the new boxes, with rental or purchase would help their currently struggling device sales (September quarterly report).
It is in the same way, that we are on Hitron with huge investment on those routers, which are not actually included in the list of currently supported Comcast modems (they prefer Arris, which bought out Motorola in 2003).
So at this point, it is all guessing, we will know when it comes or they make the announcement.
Rogers has certainly been known to push new software to older set boxes hoping that they can be fully operational whether it be Scientific Atalanta (SA), Cisco Nextbox, or now the Technicolor and in the east, Motorola - It is all hardware - just depends upon whether it is compatible with the full Comcast model of Internet, Docsis 3.1, routers, Internet apps and set boxes.
At this point, that information is all on a need to know I am sure and being kept tight as a drum.
Lots of curiousity by us all, but we just have to wait, but one thing for sure that I see - once it comes, and if the 2019 end to non IPTV services (i.e., traditional QAM cable), it puts all the services in Canada on a level playing field, and it will all be feature sets, stability, pricing and customer service that will determine who goes where.
Unfortunately, I have no doubt that companies will stick with proprietary control on what boxes can be used that you can't buy one box and go to another company - they talked about that in the industry and FCC in the States, and it died, it will only come here if CRTC makes it happen and they have had no interest in it in the past either.
Ahh - surprise boxes of what our services will look like in the future.

I noted in one of my posts on the Internet forum that Rogers was advertising that their integration of the X1 platform will be using a "solid state wireless set top box" which also enables the feature of "cloud DVR". A picture is included of what it looks like below from the Q3 2017 financial report:
The size of the new box is very small, so it is safe to assume that the new service will require the customer to have Rogers Internet (hence IPTV). Apart from that, they are targeting for a soft commercial launch of the platform in early 2018. The company is also using its employees to test the new platform starting this month as reported by an article here: http://www.multichannel.com/news/cable-operators/rogers-nears-x1-employee-trials/416121

Will this box have 4k or will there be 2 different boxes?
Thank you.

Rogers X1 IPTV "Soft Launch"
Anyone here know how this soft launch will be distributed? Meaning if it will be random subscribers or will it be a sign up of some sort... kind of how the modem firmware beta trials were rolled out.
I wanna be part of that soft launch for sure after playing around with a family members X1 in the US. Pretty darn awesome.

Hello @froma
More information will come next year when they start the process on how someone can enrole. I have heard different ways on how someone can get it but it's not a official word yet.
At this moment only Rogers employees internally are getting the chance to do a soft test on it. Stay tuned!

I just had a Rogers technician visit to address communication issues between my recently installed Rogers 4K Nextbox and my Samsung Series 9000 4K TV (white snow, freezes and sound interruptions). He told me there was no solution for the HDMI call communication problems that I and other 4K subscribers are experiencing as the boxes are not able to communicate properly with Samsung and certain other TVs. The only solution will be elimination of the HDMI cable by substituting the new X1 IPTV service that he confirmed was currently being tested by his fellow technicians ussing the box shown by others in this thread. He said that Rogers was trying to roll it out to the public in January or soon thereafter but they want to make sure it is thoroughly tested and failure proof before going public. He also said that self-install will not likely be an option initially as they are going to have the technicians do the install (for free) to make sure it is working properly with your Rogers internet service.
In the meantime, those of us with the communication problem will just have to live with it (for $25 4K box rental per month) or pull out our old Nextbox 3.0 box and return the 4K box. Any bets as to whether we will be able to watch and PVR the Super Bowl without signal breakup with IPTV?

Has the Comcast X1 IPTV system been deployed in the US? If so what boxes have been deployed? Presumably Rogers would be deploying the same boxes as Comcast is using in the US.
When you say the HDMI cable would be eliminated- how is that possible? How would the box connect to the TV? HDMI is really the only option unless you could use a Smart TV app but that isn’t feasible for all TVs.

Rogers has announced that they will be starting a soft roll-out of this service within the next three months (presumably their employees are already testing it).
Is this service widely used in the US by Comcast today? It seems strange to me that when you Google "Comcast X1 IPTV" that most of the hits are regarding Rogers and Videotron using this service from Comcast. Why isn't there more from US sites? Or is Google filtering my results to Canada.
Does anyone know what boxes Comcast is using? Presumably we would be getting the same hardware, would we not?

Hello @wayner92
They are not. I am not allowed to say the model box number however they are not the say as the ones in the US from what i have seen.
However reps have been told the boxes may change. So that could mean we will. No one will tell u the model number or what box until it gets released. Employees are told not to say much.

Its very widely used. Try searching for their commercial branding name, "Xfinity"
Not only is it widely deployed by Comcast, its has also been adopted by another major US cable company, Cox Communications.

How can I become a Beta Tester for the new Ignite/IPTV that Rogers is bringing out?
I love TV and Technology, I'm not an employee of Rogers just a regular customer is there any chance I can be a beta tester? If so how? I imagine they will allow customer to beta test as well as they get closer to official launch.
If this is possible pls let me know and I can provide my info.
