Very low upload speed Help!!

Hey,

2 months ago my upload was 2Mbps then recently  it has dropped to 0.24 or 00.8 http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/2893370170

I have a few computers in the basement with same upload speed. I bought a range extender but it's still the same speed. I'm not sure what else to do.

I traced my DNS servers IP and it was very high ping with some packet loss.

if the DNS is causing the problems; Should I change  the servers inside the router? What are the compilcations if I do change the servers on all devices Also, Am i even allowed to change the servers to a public one like google/open DNS?

Re: Very low upload speed Help!!

You can safely change DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. There will be no complications. Google DNS tend to be more reliable and faster, however it is very unlikely that your problems with speed are caused by DNS.

What Internet Package are you on?

Re: Very low upload speed Help!!

I'm on the Extreme plus package. I'm trying to figure out what happen in the last 2-3 months, that made my Upload go to 3MBPS to 0.24 lol.

I changed the secondary DNS server to Google, and that helped with ping.  I noticed around the neighbour hood white cables running from the ground to their houses.
I just want to know if its my end or their end.. What can cause low upload speed in2-3 months time.

I traced twich t.v while streaming the Dota finals, at the same time traced Google.ca.

C:\Users\User>ping www.twich.tv

Pinging www.twich.tv [199.9.250.76] with 32 bytes of data:

Re: Very low upload speed Help!!

On your google trace.. the first drop off is at a google address.  The previous one to that, is a rogers one. So, that could be still either or.. could be a rogers, or a google then problem.. something in the transition away from that last rogers node.

Now, are all of these on wireless?  Have you done the same tests on wired?

Re: Very low upload speed Help!!

It's all wireless and I'm in the basement. The wired on upstaris computer is working fine. I just don't get the fact that the wireless was working like 3 months ago and a year before that.

I even have a wireless extender.

Re: Very low upload speed Help!!

There is possibility that wireless channel you were using all that time became too congested. I suggest either changing to another wireless channel or switching to 5MHz band.

Re: Very low upload speed Help!!

I concur.

If the wired is working fine, right speeds, etc.  The wireless then is to blame.  Wireless in the end, even if you are sitting right beside the router..CAN always be slightly slower/more latency than wired.   Add in any interfearance..and that can change things.

Has anything changed in the house itself?  Was there any portable phones installed, added, moved around?  Where are their bases (the ones that plug into the phone lines) in relation to the router and/or your PC.

Any baby monitors, etc?
(any of these can cause interfearance, as they generally operate on the same frequency range as the routers).

A good program to get, is inSSIDer.  Install and run this, and it will give you a good map, of you and any other wireless access points in range.. and if there is any overlap.  This can help you find a free channel from interfearance.
As well, as long as your laptop supports it, etc.. using a dual band router with the 5mhz band range, will give you one less used, and possibly clearer signals.

Re: Very low upload speed Help!!

I downloaded the inSSIDer program and it tells me nothing is overlapping. I tried different channels and the problem is still happening. Nothing around the house has changed.

When I stream anything or use the upload usage the ping goes to 1000+. I'm also using ping plotter as my source for that.

Is there another program ( free) that I can moniter the upload on my network?

Re: Very low upload speed Help!!

Its definately something still with the wireless..

Are you using the extender still? if you move closer to the regular router, do you get any better ping?

If you havent already.. update the drivers on the wireless card.
