It appears that Rogers has sent out new firmware version 6.6.0.0120.  The previous version was 6.4.0.0112.  To find your version go to Settings, scroll up one to Troubleshooting, select About.  I have not received this yet myself, but have seen a similar comment regarding the font on another Forum.  We can use this thread to keep track of any other changes noted with the new firmware...

It may take up to several weeks before the firmware is rolled out to all people in Ontario using Navigatr, so don't be surprised if you don't get the new firmware for a while.  Sounds like Rogers may wish to stop the rollout altogether if the font is as bad as stated.  Is it possible for someone with the new firmware to take a photo of the new font and post it here?

I am still on 6.4.0.0112 as well.

Be interesting to see what has happened with fonts.  There has always been issues with descriptions being chopped off.  We have all been on the same font set for well over a year now, wonder what the rationale was for changing them.

You would think after all the challenges they had last time around with nailing down fonts, that maybe they would have run it across some customers first - but I ask for too much I think when it comes to TV.

It would be nice if when they do these updates, they put out a list of what was changed, so we can assess the impacts on us and see if there are things we are going to have to look seriously at how it may impact our "viewing experience".

But again, me thinks I ask for too much.

Some things just stay the same!!

Looking forward to a post with the changes.

Please Rogers - put the font back to what it was.

Box running 6.6.0.0.120 happened sometime in the last couple of weeks.

How can they change only the guide font after X years ?  What happened to unified graphic design ? It's like a coder picked a random font to drive any of us with even the slightest OCD personality up the wall.

System Font    ....  Guide Font

See how that visually doesn't work ?   Please ... roll back / fix the guide font.

Re: Updates to the Navigatr TV Guide - Version 6.6.0.0120

Hello @jbrtyuo,

I can understand how the change in font would be an unwelcome surprise especially if it doesn't exactly match up with the system font.

The new firmware was only rolled out to older NextBox units that were having issues with responsiveness or sluggishness when entering commands from the remote. This was in the works for some time and through rigorous testing, it was determined that part of the problem was the font style. A more simplified font style was required to improve the performance of the older NextBox's running the Navigatr guide.

I know it can be annoying seeing two different font styles but you should notice the guide runs a lot smoother now. We will definitely pass along your feedback to have one font style as I can see how that would bother a lot of customers.

Thank you for posting your concerns!

Well at least there's a reason for the odd fonts  !    Thanks for the feedback.

Glad to hear Rogers is trying to improve the older Netbox experience, because it has degraded significantly.  To the point of looking at switching providers at times.  Been power cycling the PVR to restore system responsiveness a little too much over the past few months.   I see that Rogers no longer sells Nextbox 3.0 or Nextbox 4K , only rents.   Less choices for subscribers .. great.

Is there a list of the models that will be getting this firmware?

I've got a couple of 8642HD PVRs that sound like this firmware was made for.

It is extremely irritating whenever an update like this is rolled out because the set-box will crash and only some TV channels will be available. This time I have tried to reboot multiple times with no luck. I even tried to reauthorized the box and still no luck. The rollout is too much for the box's tiny memory to handle so it takes many many reboots before it finally is up and running again. To make matters worse, Rogers does not advise customers when the update is coming and to be prepared for service disruption. And the response time for help is terrible. The only really helpful site for info is Canadian Outages which will give you an idea what other customers are experiencing. http://canadianoutages.com/status/rogers

Re: Updates to the Navigatr TV Guide - Version 6.6.0.0120

Hello @Hwaiting & @Danno,

@Hwaiting, The update has been designed to optimize the Nextbox 2.0 (Models 4642, 8600, and 8642) so it looks like your boxes will get an update soon! It's being released in batches so it could take some time before you receive it. Make sure your boxes are connected via Coax and Power and the update should arrive automatically.

@Danno, I know how frustrating it can be when your TV channels stop working all of a sudden. The update should not have caused specific channels to stop working and I suspect there could be a signal issue on the line. We'll need to run some tests on your equipment to be certain. Please send us a DM @CommunityHelps and we can take a look at this for you.

My two Nextbox 2.0s received the new firmware. I've now lost Whole Home PVR. My Nextbox 3.0 and my two 2.0s aren't connecting. Rogers reps filed a tier 2 ticket and it was closed by engineering who couldn't find anything. Now they're going to send a technician. I'm pretty sure their firmware has busted Whole Home PVR on the boxes I own. I'm not pleased. Oh, and the font looks awful. But I'll take it if I can get Whole Home PVR working again.

Wow! An awesome technician came out to our house and fixed the problem. We had a powered 7-way (I think) splitter in the basement with built-in MoCA filter. He replaced with a stand-alone MoCA filter, a two way to split off internet, then a four way. This restored Whole Home. Perhaps the firmware update was a bizarre coincidence? I'm impressed with the resolution. Tech support also gave me a very nice credit for the trouble. Good on you Rogers.

I've Been Here Awhile

As requested by the Rogershelps Twitter account, here is my bug report.

When cancelling an upcoming episode of a series recording, it looks like it's cancelled ... but often it records anyway (or, if you come back later to the list of scheduled recordings, it once again shows as scheduled).  I have not yet been able to find if there's a pattern as to which ones stay cancelled and which ones come back from the dead.  This did not happen before the new firmware.

Also, credit where credit is due:  the annoying multiple-second wait after deleting a recording has mostly gone away, so the effort to improve responsiveness has indeed helped in this case.  The only instance I've seen where this delay persists happens when deleting a recording that's still underway.

And finally, a suggestion of another way to enhance responsiveness:  after scheduling a recording, the box displays something to the effect of "Recording scheduled" on the screen.  For several seconds.  It does not respond to key presses on the remote until this message times out.  The user should be able to dismiss this message and get back to what they were doing - I'd suggest by pressing Exit, but some other method (e.g. an "OK" button on the screen) would work, too.  Just get rid of the forced several-second wait.

This was done on purpose with one of the updates. It used to be that you could immediately go on to do other things, but this often caused issues with the scheduled recordings not being properly set because these boxes are not instantaneous.  Much better to have to wait a few seconds until the scheduling has been done properly, than to have issues.

This is apparently not the case.  Several people over on Digital Home have reported that their 9865s have had the update and they too respond a bit more quickly to certain commands.

Better yet would be to only delay the user as long as is strictly necessary.  They managed to cut out almost all the delay in deleting a program; they should put some effort into doing something similar here.

Also, these boxes run Linux, a multitasking multithreaded operating system.  If there's a process that takes some time, put it in a background task or thread and let the user interface resume.  Yes, I know, the CPUs in these things are pitiful, but if they can handle recording several programs, playing one (or more in a whole home environment) programs back, and a user going through the guide simultaneously, they can handle a background task/thread that ties up all the loose ends involved in scheduling a recording.  (Nearly 30 years ago I used to deploy Unix systems that could run a small business' accounting etc. off a single 80386 CPU.  These boxes are way more powerful than that.)

Can confirm that my NB3 was updated to 6.6.0.0120

Can't say anything about responsiveness, but can say that there is no font change in the guide.

Haven't powered up my 4642 yet to see what changes it received.

Our update was just applied and the new font is hard to read. Nasty.

Update just came today on our NB3 - NB2 was earlier in week - yes, I do find the font a bit more challenging. I see some improvement in performance on both boxes, but if we are achieving performance by compromising readability for those with vision issues (say like me and many others), this really isn't acceptable.  I already do things slowly in response to my visual acuity issues, I can live with a bit less speed for improved fonts.

And guess what, under law, my rights to accommodation trump making things easier for those without challenges.

Just saying.

They never have been able to wrap their heads around the font issue right from day one.

Re: Updates to the Navigatr TV Guide - Version 6.6.0.0120

I’d be interested to hear why my non-pvr nextbox is now super sluggish to respond when trying to scroll or even exit the guide since this update was pushed??? My 3 boxes are less the 2 years old. Your excuse doesn’t seem to carry much water in my opinion as it was fine b4 and so frustrating since I’ve given up most nights and switched over to netflix.

Wow, just wow! I came here thinking there was something wrong with my 8642 because of the fonts, and I can believe this was by design.

Maybe it's because I'm used to the performance issues, but I think I'd rather have it back to the way it was. The lag of the guide was less impacting than the lag of trying to read that font.

Who comes up with this stuff and signs off on it?! Not acceptable Rogers!

I reported a couple of days ago that the firmware update broke Whole Home PVR after years of perfect function. I then reported back that a tech came out, replaced some splitters, and then it worked. Well, unfortunately that lasted less than 24 hours. I have no Whole Home again. I've spoken with the tech (he gave me his cell) and he's booking another appointment to come out. But he now suspects a firmware problem. He has a second customer with the same problem.
