I've Been Around

Hi,

We'll be travelling to the Philippines for a few weeks shortly and I was wondering whether it is possible to get my iPhone 4 unlocked so that I can use it there with a local carrier?

Thanks

Re: Unlocking iPhone Thread

If you own the phone fully, Rogers can unlock it, but I think you have to be here to do it.

You may be best at looking at 3rd Party unlock sight.

Well another month, another experience with Rogers that has left a sour taste in my mouth.

Fast forward to this week.  I decided to upgrade my iphone 4 to the Samsung Galaxy S3 (let's leave the "why did you do that" for another time, lol).  I was 1 month away from the second year of my 3 year contract with Rogers.

Now, at this point I was very pleasantly surprised as I could by a new phone (albeit on another 3 year term which didn't concern me) at no cost to upgrade early.  I knew that my iphone 4 would still fetch a decent return by selling it, so it was a satisfying situation at this point.

I decided to move ahead with the changes.

Here's where it gets "stinky."  I went to a Rogers kiosk for the upgrade and I was told that I would have to pay a $35 administration fee for the change.  Now, if the item was shipped to me I understand handling, packaging and what not, but the retailer literally removed the sim card from my iphone and inserted it into the S3.  And this costs $35?  I could have done that myself.  This is a gouge.

Then I found a buyer for my iphone 4.  I called Rogers to unlock the phone as the buyer was not with Rogers and they explained that I would be charged $50 for this "service."  The first person that I talked to explained that I had to own the phone for at least 6 months and my account be in good standing.  However, the next person explained the %50 charge.

I was incredulous!  I owned that phoned, it is my perogative to sell it.  No one will ever know the exact costs to Rogers of the phones that they sell.  Being on a contract, I have paid for the subsidized amount of the phone through my monthly (exhorbatant) rates, locked to at least 3 year terms.  The person told me that Apple charges for these fees and there is nothing that they can do. If this is indeed true, then this might have been the last Apple wireless product that I own.

Then, after I begrudgingly tell them to go ahead, I'm asked for the IMDE (or whatever) number on my phone and I hear the person hitting a couple of keystrokes for literally 5 seconds and then I'm told to connect to itunes, hit restore, and that would complete the unlock.  I'm doing the majority of the work and getting charged $50.

I understand that I was able to upgrade early for "free" but in essence, I really paid $85 to upgrade my phone (admin. and unlock fees).  I think it is crooked, and it really tempts me to remove another service that I have and go elsewhere.  I had 4 services with Rogers at one point, I think it will just be 1 (wireless), for at least the next 3 years.

Anyone switching phones, even I they owned the old one, and went to the new one would be charged the admin fee. That's standard and very company does it. (My uncle was a small tells dealer, and he had to as well)

Anywhere you go to get a phone unlocked, either Rogers or 3rd part will charge you. Again, any provider will do the same. If you want to avoid this, buy and unlocked phone from the start at full price.

This is known fact and STORE would had to explain to you about the $35 admin fee.  Everyone pays it.

As for unlocking, what did you honestly though it required.  And to be truthful, its alot of backend by APPLE who charges ROGERS a FEE to unlock and access to there system.  The $50 fee is normal and cheap for iphone, 3rd party unlockers charge $130 for iphone, as its all apple server side and not like blackberrries etc for unlocking.

Again they woudl had told you on phone it cost $50, you said yes and decided to unlock.

So in essence no hidden prices, as you coudl had denied upgrade and unlock and pay nothing and stuck with same phone.

Hello,

1 year later, my iPhone 4 is still locking to Rogers, my iPhone is bought in cash for $600 from a store, and no any conditions and no accounts! Rogers, tell me please how long I must wait until unlocking my iPhone?

Re: Unlocking iPhone Thread

Hello;

Is it possible to unlock an Iphone 4 from Bell to rogers? I see lots of conversations about unlocking the iphones but can't find a direct answer to this.

Re: Unlocking iPhone Thread

Whoever is the owner of the phone would have to talk to bell.

It is possible to be done? Yes.  But bell will have to do it, usualy requires the phone to be out of contract/owned fully.  There may be a charge to do so, etc.

Only other choice would be a 3rd party unlocker.

I just finished a lengthy tel call with  Rogers(ask for the unlocking department or service) but my daughter in law:s iphone 4s is now unlocked (50$), I am a Rogers customer with an accout in good standing ... so they billed my account. All I have to do when I get my SIM card with the new carrier is go on Itune, plug my phone and click on the restore button in the center of the screen..

Best Regards!

Does anyone know unlocking the iphone through Rogers (IMEI) is permanent?  Will that be equivalent to factory unlock where we don't have to ever worry about upgrading the OS, baseband etc and still expect the phone to work  with a different carrier afterwards?

@ks

Of you do the unlocking from Rogers it is permanent. It will stay UNLOCKED no matter what OS software or Baseband. It stays factory unlocked. The code Rogers uses is from Apple.

Hello Clucas

Did you pay the full price for the phone? Or did you finish the 3 year term?

In order for Rogers to unlock it for you, it would cost $50 for Rogers to unlock it & there are a few things for them to do it.

1. The phone must be paid full price
2. If you bought the phone on a 3 year term, you must have finished the 3 year term.
3. The phone MUST be on a Rogers account for them to unlock it.

I suggest contacting Rogers & speaking to them more about it.

Re: Unlocking iPhone Thread

Can my iphone 4 be unlocked no matter what the baseband is

Hello MikaholicA

Yes you can BUT at the moment you can only unlock via Rogers. If you want Rogers to unlock it, you need to follow the policies.

- The device being paid full price.
- Device MUST be attached on a account.
- The phone has to be done its 3 year term with the account to be eligible to have Rogers unlock the phone.

The unlocking fee from Rogers is $50. Jail breaking the phone & unlocking it threw a app is also available to you if you like.

hi all,

I recently use 1 locked iphone 4 from Rogers ISP.

I'm from Viet Nam And My iphone is expired from 20-Oct-2012.

Actually, my phone is bought from a canadian student who traveled to Viet Nam.

So I'm not contract owner of this iphone.

Where and How can I unlocked my expired iphone 4? Rogers can help me?

Thanks

I would like to see Rogers change their unlock policy.  It's currently offered after 3 years/end of contract, but it would be nice to see them offering it after 3 months.  I would also like to see Rogers drop the price of the unlocking service to $35 or less.  Other wireless companies are doing this.

Re: Unlocking iPhone Thread

Good afternoon.

First of all I would like to apologize in advance to bring you a low level of English proficiency and the use of on-line interpreter, but the situation has developed with my phone forcing me.

You see what it was 11 months ago, my friend is in Canada, personally purchased the iPhone 4S 16Gb for free, in-store mobile operator Rogers, of course, without any type of contracts and subsidies, full prise.

Just two weeks after purchase, the phone was delivered to Russia, and during use, I twice changed the local operator (MTS, MegaFone), did a hardware reset, activated the phone in the Russian network operators, upgrade the software to 6.0 and did not experience absolutely no problems.

However, just four days ago, after a hard reset, the phone refused to activate, restore a backup and perform with them what else do something.

The only message is on the screen - please set the SIM card which supports the activation of the phone, and the network is both Russian operators and the phone is no problem with the signal level.

Based on the above, I concluded that there was a misunderstanding, and for some unknown reason, Rogers blocked phone.

Maybe I do not fully understand the company's policy and I have no idea how to be locked phone purchased for full price.

Please, tell me what action is your opinion should I take to bring the phone to a working state in the future step by step?

Advance grateful for your response.

Yes Rogers policy on Unlocking is unfortunate but luckily there is temporary solutions that work just as good..

I have been selling brand new Gevey Sims that work on iOS 6.0.1 on the iPhone 4S & iPhone 5 and they work great.

The only problem with the Gevey Unlock is that it only supports the iPhone 4 on iOS 4.3.5 or lower Smiley Frustrated
