Hi Community,

On December 15, 2015, I let everyone know that we had started to roll out the updated Navigatr guide.  Take a look here for that post.

As we continue to roll out the update, customers will be notified ahead of time that they will be getting the new software.

If you have received the updated Navigatr software (i.e. since December 15, 2015) and would like to ask a question and/or share your findings/learnings, please do so in THIS THREAD.

As always, the Community Guidelines and Terms of Use apply.

Thanks very much for keeping the community a pleasant place to be!

...and why does Rogers never provide information on what's new in a firmware update?  For example, you'd think Rogers would want us to be aware of any new features.  Or advise us what was fixed, if anything.

Customers who download new software for their computers almost always are provided with that sort of information.

Of course most people have the option of whether or not to download new software for their computer, whereas Rogers forces firmware on their customers whether they want it or not, so I guess since we don't have much, if any, say in the matter, Rogers treats their customers with utter contempt and like mushrooms.

I suppose Rogers did provide some information regarding Navigatr (and previously RTN) on the Rogers website when there was totally new firmware.  Unfortunately that information was inaccurate and more of a marketing programme than actual useful information for the customer.

There was no information provided regarding the recent updates to Navigatr (or previously RTN or SARA), even if in some very isolated instances, there was actually good news in an update - like the removal of the power saving "feature" that made PVRs go into a coma in December, or the fact that we can finally activate CC from a recording, even if it would be difficult to come up with a more convoluted or unintuitive procedure to do so.

I can understand why Rogers would want to upgrade without asking as it should make it easier for the tech support people to have everyone running the same software levels. Yes it would be nice to see the bug fixes/enhancements made although that is an admission of problems which I suppose they may not want to admit to either us or the competition.

Talking of updates - I appear to have had one last night which completley screwed up the recording of the Daily show (again - why is it always that show ? - guess it must be the time the update is done?).

It left me with a large number of empty tiles - no title - no nothing - and a date back in ancient history. It also had two copies of the Daily Show (actually the Nightly Show)  stuck in "Recording" mode whcih would not allow me to either stop recording or delate them.

And before anybody asks - Yes a reboot got rid of them all but of course did not reinstate my missing recordings nor did it reinstate 2 back issues of the Daily Show that it apparently deleted.

I would call and ask Rogers when this nonsense will end but I no longer care. I have decided to take my business elsewhere.

ENOUGH!! I have made a tentative agreement with Bell. I have to cut two trees down which are in the way  to get the Sat. signal. there in the way anyway! I have checked with other people with Bell. Their a lot happier than I am! My sister switched recently & say's it's a lot better. So when the snow goes & warms up a bit, if it ever does? I'm taking my TV, internet, home phone, & two cell phones to Bell. I've had enough!!

OH 65% less complaints? I say that's not true!!

I don't know if this one is on the Bad Functionality list or not, but here goes.

When you see a recorded program, you use to be able to see the description when you highlighted it on the list of recordings and you could tell directly if you had a duplicate. You could scroll down and just delete it.   Now all you see is the tile and it might say is NEW.  You could have 2 or 3 tiles of the program with NEW.

When you select the tile and press INFO, you get nothing. You have to press SELECT to see the description, then EXIT and go to the next tile and do the same thing.  Once you know it is a duplicate you can press delete.

In terms of functionality you have increased the number of clicks from (1) scroll (2) delete (3) confirm to  (1) select (2) exit (3) scroll (4) select (5) scroll (6) delete (7) confirm assuming you have a duplicate recording.

When you improve the functionality it should reduce the number of clicks you have to make. If you double it, that is not an improvement or an enhancement from my perspective.

Agree.  The marketing of this product has been completely misleading.  Plus, the instructions on the Rogers website continue to have many errors and there has been no attempt to correct them.

Re: UPDATED NextBox Navigatr - December 2015/January 2016

I agree i really dislike the new guide AND the layout of my PVR recorded shows.

The guide:

- i do not like the visual layout of the guide, it takes up too much of the screen

The PVR

- after the upgrade, my PVR did not record shows;  i had to go back and ensure that it is recording the series.

- i don't understand why the tiles need to show the large pictures;  takes up too much of the screen, causing you to have to scroll

- it loads WAY Too slowly!!!

I don't care much for the visual layout but it is simiar to Bell and Crave TV so obviously many do.  As for your hardware not functioning you have have the same problem as many others seem to have had, that being an outdated or defective piece of equipment. My 9865HD records and loads at an adequate level. All PVRs are is a computer and they aren't intended to last more than a few years. Time to exchange it unless you bought it and if you did, you have a new doorstop

Honestly not everything is a hardware issue as some here seem to believe. Why would a PVR only last a couple of years? That is not intended at all.Sure the hard drives are the weak link but other than that they are a cable tuner run by software. Now there is your weak link.

I never said everything was a software issue.Just the obvious ones that you argued against like the slow response of the 9865 which apparently was a software issue. But hey what would I know?I'm just a tech who fixes problems.

You wish to post your concerns on Rogers FaceBook page. The Rogers staff does respond. Take a look at my posting.

Dream on. I have posted to FB, have gone on Twitter, had DM with RogersHelps via Twitter etc. makes no difference. Yes they *respond*. Just like the Mods here *respond*.

Everyone says they are passing the info "up the line" to the appropriate teams. Have you seen any concrete examples of where that has helped? Does anyone "up the line" care?

Appears not.....

I even tweeted and stated a convo with consumer reporter Ellen Roseman of the Toronto Star who has written about Navigatr and Rogers before. Even that went nowhere (as best I can tell...)

Keep trying by all means and thanks for your efforts, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a positive outcome.

Hi Steelheader,

I had a look at the Rogers FB page, and found the Visitor posts section that opens a little window.  Read down through numerous complaint posts.  It turns out people are also upset with the Rogers Internet service.  That was good to know.

As far as your post (I have no idea which one was yours) and all the other people complaining about Navigatr, the responses from Rogers just look like another layer of buffer.  I couldn't see any actual Rogers response that gave any time frame for fixing anything.  At least the Rogers employees on FB do acknowledge that a lot of people are unhappy though.  Maybe that's progress.

Hello fellow Navihatrs!

Hope you're doing well. I've been off the forums for a while enjoying the better things in life (Navigatr not included), but something has come up to bring me back. For the last week or so, playback of various recordings causes my box to completely freeze. Let's use Naked and Afraid as an example. Starts playing back fine, gets to the 30 minute mark, box freezes. Hit power, wait two minutes or so and either the box shuts off or reboots itself. Start playback again from the beginning. Fast forward to the 29 minute mark. Hit play. Box freezes again at 30 minute mark. Only way to get past it is to FF past the 30 minute mark. Interestingly, same thing is happening when playing back via a separate box connected to this PVR via Whole Home.

Called Rogers and they checked my signals and think it's a signal issue to the box. They want to send a technician. Sounds like complete BS to me. Unless the box is so stupid that a bad signal causes it to record corrupt data which hoses any box that tries to play it back. What do you think? Has anyone else experienced this? Seems more like a software issue to me. Of course the Rogers tech hadn't heard anything about it. They never have.

Yes, a bad signal can cause an issue with a recording, perhaps to the extent that it will not play.  If they're sending a technician, I assume they checked your signal remotely and found it lacking.  Many issues come from a bad signal - like bad recordings, VOD problems, or even just normal operation of the PVR because it's not a "stand alone" system any more - often "calling in" to the head and for channels, or rights, or firmware, or whatever.

The first tech I spoke with said there was a signal problem. Then I rebooted the box and spoke to another tech and they said the signals were just fine. Does this indicate a failing box? Or an intermittent signal issue? I'm quite skeptical about the need for a technician - it just seems so odd that a box would completely freeze when playing back corrupt content. Dropping frames, audio, etc. makes sense. But to lock up...?

Check the signal yourself at different times of the day.

For 9865 (NextBox 3.0) & 8642 (NB2.0) & 4642 with latest firmware using the remote:
1) Press and hold the Exit key for two seconds until the power LED flashes on the front panel of the PVR
2) In quick succession, press the down arrow button twice, then press the 2 button. This will get you into the diagnostics section where you can browse all kinds of information.

The signal strength should be between -10dB and +10, with zero being about optimum (for digital stations)

The S/N ratio is good if it’s at about 35 dB or higher, although a good HD signal can be received with slightly lower numbers. If your S/N is around 30-32 (or less) though, that could be a source of problems.

If you've got an 8642 (NB2) and WHPVR, then the hardware is probably overloaded as soon as anything out of the ordinary happens.

@57,

Thanks for the help. I was able to get into the diagnostics. I see that S/N ratio is 40.30 but I'm not sure what else to check. Any pointers on what screens to look at?

Thanks!

Technician came out and says signal is perfectly fine. He suspects a software problem on the box with the copyright decoding. Said he's never seen it that bad. Suggested a box swap but wasn't particularly confident that that would solve the problem (since playback on all boxes is affected). I suspect firmware problem. Diagnostics lists March 5 as firmware date. Coincides pretty nicely with beginning of freezes.
