Tiles versus lists - just for giggles, my wife and I put Netflix which has the same tile model, and used it on our phone with touch screen - tiles are great on a touch screen - swipe to navigate, touch the tile to go deeper and move immediately through choices.

Analogue remotes are designed for text and movement by curser (up down, left right) movements.  Macros are imbedded in the remote or at least some for things like day up day down, guide rather than going into menu and choosing, double click of guide for regular guide versus favourites, Fav button to easily add and change favourites (the old way anyway), music button, on demand button, list to avoid the use of the c for sorting and selecting, live button to close out of a view and go back to your last show hd takes you up into the alternative hd channels in the 500 ranges up, a,b,c,d all are macros, info and menu contain shortcuts.

Carefully designed application of macros or program routines of repetetive steps to achieve an end goal make remotes more efficient to use, but all of these features are useless in general when you go to tiles, although some of these buttons avoid going to the menu.

So we figured out through comparison why tiles work on Netflix on a touch screen, and do not work well on an analogue model of user inputs using directional keys and selection of choices.

Yes, it could be said that we just need to get used to it, or learn to deal with the change, but change is very difficult and makes people resistant when no instruction is provided, no logic is given why the choice was made, and no step by step process like has been done for users on this forum, done by @Gdkitty.  With this extremely helpful guide, all created through the input of the forum members (not Rogers), allows us to learn to deal with the change.  We still have the right to say we dislike it, and suggest alternatives, but we can at least easily figure out how to use the device with relative ease now.

The video media industry (not saying Cable, Fibe or any company), the whole industry is in transition at the moment, and this current attempt moves us closer to whatever will be avaible in the future tech models, but for now, this attempt was a dismal failure in implementation, and communication, and responsivemenss to customer concerns.

I've Been Here Awhile

Hey Gerim, When you say playback is it only when you're playing back recorded shows? My frame drops always occur with live video, I actually never checked with video on PVR playback.

Using the Netflix-like tiles, IMHO, for search results, which is the latest major step backwards in the utility of the Navigatr interface that arrived on my PVR  a few days ago, is nothing short of horrible.  Netflix has MouseOver so you immediately see all you need to know about the video. NOT so, on TV. Using tiles for the recorded programs is very slightly better than in search results, but still a serious downgrade compared to lists.  We need information on the recorded and scheduled programs and especially on search results.  Obviously, I need to know the title of the show or program, including the teams in a sporting event.  However, the teams should NOT be included when recording a series.  I am currently unable to schedule multiple recordings for my BPL soccer because a few years ago the team names were moved from "information" to the program title, which completely threw the ability to record a series of games under the bus!  (Well, you would think that you could record the two games a year where the team names are the same, but as they reverse the order, you cannot. 😉

In addition to the show details, I need to know the channel and ideally whether I am subscribed to it or not, or have the Guide filter for subscribed channels only, carry through to search results.  I need to know the date, so I can tell if it is recorded or still only scheduled, or some indication that it is recorded, or not. Personally, I prefer to keep scheduled recordings separate from recorded programs.  This, too, was a step backward, I feel.

One thing is for sure - black rectangles with some graphic (that is essentially meaningless mostly) and only a partial title of the show is completely insufficient information on which to base a decision as to whether you want to click on it or not.  Given the slow response now, it really is a show stopper to have to click on an icon that looks like it might be what you want to record, only to find that you do not get that channel, or the teams, or content is of no interest, or it is not even the correct program.  I will now have to waste hours of my leisure time (which I do not have a lot of, like most of you folks nowadays) clicking on tiles (which so far are almost totally not what I want) until I finally fnd the few really good games in the BPL this week that I want to watch.  Quite frankly, if they do not fix this really quickly, I will finally, after over 30 years of loyalty to Rogers, give Bell and others a call and see what they have to offer.  ;(

@PoppaGray, I strongly suggest you look into using AnyPlace Web for your computer/browser or RAPTV (app) for tablet, or the appropriate app for specific phone to do your searches and to check your list of recordings and/or scheduled recordings.

Even before Navigatr, I used AnyPlace/Web/Computer or RAPTV for my iPad for all my searches and the vast majority of the programming I did on the PVR.  Although it's not perfect and is down sometimes (one day per quarter and the occasional hour here or there) it's still far preferable to searching on the PVR itself, since the searches on it are so kludgy.

my issue is with PVR playback, but then I record almost everything I watch so I can skip commercials and watch very little "live" TV.

@57, AnyPlace Web sounds great and does look like a good solution for many. Only problem is I do not have a smart phone, nor do I have a suitable tablet, nor do I consider I should have to get both just because Rogers cannot get their latest and "greatest" search facility to be as functonal as it was for many years on the old Explorer 8300HD machine (which was substantially faster than my two NextBox 8642 machines also).

Thank you for the suggestion, nevertheless and in many cases it would indeed resolve the issue, but unfortunately not for me.  I realize I am somewhat of a Luddite where cell phones are concerned, but I do not want to place a device next to my ear (or anywhere else on my person for that matter) that is continually communicating with a cell tower several miles away.  Call me paranoid if you wish, but I do think that I have a Rogers product that purports to provide searching capabilities as part of its PVR functionality. Is it too much to expect their search facility actually to be usable?  The latest change, at least for me, has rendered the PVR effectively useless for recording my BPL soccer games.

I also only have a 6-year old dumb PAYGo phone that is occasionally used for emergencies. Almost anyone has a computer with a web browser that can make use of AnyPlace Web version.  Many people have tablets or phones that can make use of the appropriate apps, depending on their preference....

The search functionality on the 8300 itself is horrible. The search on RTN for the 8642/9865 was better, but still horrible similar to Navigatr.  If you have a computer, give AnyPlace a try. I doubt you'll ever search on the PVR itself again.

If you already have a Rogers account, here's where you can sign in, Click on "Manage PVR":

If you click "remember me", you don't even have to sign in the next time and AnyPlace is one click away.

I've started to use the AnyPlace web version to manage my recordings since Navigatr landed on my TV.

AnyPlace TV does make things a lot easier but I have run into a problem with it. in the recorded list anything more than a week old now just says 'manual recording' and when I click on that there is no information as to what the recording is. I have to then check on the cumbersome Navigatr lists /tiles to see what that recording is.

Watching TV and recorded programs used to be so much simpler.   Smiley Sad

Why worry about what's 5-6 days out in Scheduled Recordings? If you log into AnyPlace once every few days, you'll be able to see what you need.  I also see the "manual recordings", but based on the time/channel/day/date info, I usually know what it is - after all, I set it to record to begin with. 😉

Perhaps you're talking about existing recordings. Mine go back for years and I see the appropriate titles for all of them.  But again, why do you care?  You only need to see them when you want to watch them on the PVR.  😉

I have seen this suggestion and it is a great idea.  In my case, RAPTV has never worked satisfactorily on my iPad.  It worked for a short while, but now it freezes after a few actions, and crashes.  Once, quite a while ago, it actually appeared to cause the PVR to crash!  It will not delete.  So it is very unreliable.  I should have complained about it long ago, since I am sure that it was touted as one of the group of features that came with the Whole Home package.  But, since it wasn't essential to me, I didn't, and there have always been things that didn't work so well.  The PVR occasionally failed us, ROD went on the blink.  So standards of expectation were lowered.

I saw that RAPTV is now compatible with iOS 9,  but that change hasn't helped mine.

I shall check, though, if I can get the web version to work.  Thanks for the links.

Although it's not always the case, if there is an issue communicationg with the PVR via AnyPlace or RAPTV, it's almost always due to a signal issue in your home or in your neighbourhood.

I guess we're getting a bit Off-topic for this thread on Navigatr. I just wanted to provide a tip to those who haven't tried AnyPlace/RAPTV/App.

Yes, it would be off topic, except that it presents a workaround for Navigatr.  Since everything else is working, signal wise, I am wondering what the issue may be.  Will have to investigate.

Update: was able to schedule recording of a series from RAPTV no problem, and can see it on the PVR.  In the past, the app has tended to freeze after a while.  But the problem with deleting is within the app,,it says it is deleting but is still in the app list, and is still in the PVR list.

Anyway, it is a helpful workaround for Navigatr, and technical issues with it belong in another thread.

Well, @57, I am trying to get this AnyPlace TV to work as it does seem like it will answer my issues, even though I still feel I should not have to be doing this. Smiley Wink

I get to the actual remote screen, most of which is a blank dark grey. However, whenever I try to do anything I get:

An error occurred while communicating with Rogers Anyplace TV Home Edition.
Please check your Internet connection and try again.

My internet connection is fine. I an wondering if it is anything to do with my having two PVR's, as I have not yet had to specify which of the two I wish to manage remotely?  This is way off topic for this thread now. Is there anwhere else I can go to post this issue in an AnyPlace TV thread somewhere?  Thanks.

One minor added note.  I do see the Ouroboros animated icon chasing its tail around and around on the top right corner of the AnyPlace TV remote PVR control screen.  Don't know exactly what that means though.

@PoppaGray  There is a number of posts on anyplace TV.  At the top when you log in, you will see a search field, type in anyplace tv and you should see some suggestions.  Take a look through it.

Can't  help you with the home TV or multiple Set top box, as I don't have either.  We are a one digital tv home that we bought two years ago a 44" Samsung, we use a samsung Blue Ray for Smart Tv options.  We have two older tv's on the DTA-50's  I am cheap and very, very old school.

Maybe someone with a multi settop box or whole home set up can help poppagray with his issue.

Or try @CommunityHelps .

Welcome to the forum, and the wonderful world of Navigtr.  Smiley Happy

Hey, I just badged up to I am an advisor.  Guess I have been at this forum way too much - glad to have learned and helped as I went along.

I think I have worked with at least 10 different threads, mostly Navigtr, and am proud to have started the ball rolling back in July about the first upgrade.

Have met a lot of wonderful people along the way, some extremely knowledgeable people in various domains of the industry who really do know their stuff very very well.

I don't think any of us would have made this long with Navigtr if it hadn't been for the forum members.

Glad I was able to advise, commiserate, complain, and make recommendations along with all of you.

Hello @57,

WHY should I (we / anyone) have to COMPLICATE our lives to use something that lacks even basic fundamentals?

IMO, judging from the similar comments here (going back to July 2015) Rogers isn't intending on doing ANYTHING about this!

We aren't getting discounts - in fact the rates are INCREASING: The following is a quote from my "Important Information about your services and rates." letter from Rogers:

"... we're committed to bringing you the highest quality entertainment and communications. It's what drives us to invest in our network and bring you faster internet speeds, reliable home phone service, and the latest TV shows, movies and sports you love to watch."

(And used to be able to watch)

"To continue delivering the best possible service, we'll be increasing our rates for certain services. ...."

(It appears to be ALL services - what did they leave out??)

SO, since I think I am paying enough (_far_too_much_) I really don't feel like going through extra steps to do a simple procedure like "searching", recording, finding (in my recordings) and watching the HIGHEST digitalizationized (?digitalized?) quality anywhere.

Confusion about $ / rates: I think advertisements co$t money to run.

Rogers' commercials are taking up MORE and MORE time on the TV ...

It would seem that more and more of the $ I pay is supporting {fact_challanged} adds.

Could someone please explain the “chain of custody” of the money: from payment to “investing in our network” I.E. how the money I <RELUCTANTLY> give to Rogers for my "services" is invested "in our network" (but seems to be used <instead> for abnormally long and frequent commercials)

How do commercials fit into investing in our network?

FWIW - I have been seeing a number of cable company trucks (NOT ROGERS) in my area.

Thank you!

1. Hey, you have a choice. You can make your life easier, or you can make it hard.  As I mentioned, I've been using AnyPlace for searches long before Navigatr existed and it's fewer steps, it shows lists and additional options for recording/scheduling.  It also allows you to interface with your PVR when you're not at home - say at work or on vacation.

2. I doubt you have. You may have seen trucks from another provider, but Cable Companies almost never overlap areas
