On December 15, 2015, I let everyone know that we had started to roll out the updated Navigatr guide. Take a look here for that post.
As we continue to roll out the update, customers will be notified ahead of time that they will be getting the new software.
If you have received the updated Navigatr software (i.e. since December 15, 2015) and would like to ask a question and/or share your findings/learnings, please do so in THIS THREAD.
Thanks very much for keeping the community a pleasant place to be!
At least the Rogers's mods let you create a link to your posts. I don't have enough cred to do even that. Maybe the Resident Experts (gdkitty or old yellar) could start the "Navigatr Tips and Tricks" thread, then contributers can add their helpful hints until this awful mess is sorted out. It takes a lot of extra time to go through all these comments and extra emails just to find answers to specific problems. None of us are being paid for this either, so anyone who leaves a comment on the UPDATED NextBox Navigatr thread should get $100 credit on their next bill. Please don't like this comment - I already have 28 emails to left to read, and I already have my like badge from Rogers. 🙂
I spent this morning taking some pictures of the many screens on the new guide.
I am tied up for the next day or so here, but sun eve through mon i hope to put together a GUIDE, with pictures, etc.
I hope to at the start get a few others from here (@57, etc) and their input on what i have so far.
Then obviously others can add to it. (and HOPEFULLY keep it as a GUIDE/HOW TO, and not COMPLAINTS in it.)
Then post it.
So it may be a few days before I can get it posted 😞
In the mean time, Anyone who DOES have any specific tips/tricks, etc they want to make sure are added, please be sure to PM me and i will do my best to fit them in the apropriate spot.
On first impression I am not a fan of the new format. There are not enough filters in it and so you cannot tell between shows already recorded and future recordings. The fast forward feature is good as it is faster. I feel this format needs to be tweeked a little more to become more friendly and informative.
I will certainly conribute by giving feedback or suggestions, and anything that comes to mind that you may have not got. This is a great initiative on your part and the committment to it is fantastic.
Maybe you can get someone to moderate it to strip out anything other than instruction (i.e, sarcasm, comparing to past versions, rants) They belong in bigger thread.
And maybe start the thread off with your own set of terms on what the content should be. If it is clear with it then immediately following with a few of your first examples, then if a moderator would agree, then anything outsides Tips and Tricks with no commentary or critiques, just a solid instructional topic, would be considered off topic for sure. Keep the clear instructions and edit out the off topic rants and critiques. Just a thought, because I am not sure how to keep the rants out.
It may be pictorial like you are planning, or it could be bullet point step by step start to finish.
And a suggestion, put a title at the top underlined with bigger font - allowing commenters to refer back to the post with title and post number, or link if people know how to do that.
Maybe after we get a solid set of these topics, then a second thread could be developed providing recommendations/requests for changes or improvements and then possibly Rogers can respond to them and say, maybe, yes in a future build, not possible as it is outside the specs of the software being used. But let's keep the recommendations for change out of the how to's. Of course recommendations can be made, but keep them out of the how to posts.
It is like asking a Microsoft product to be an Apple - they can approximate it as they have for years, but they can't do it exactly like an Apple, and that is ok. Some platforms are better for some tasks (like in general, Microsoft is the most used and most copied business platform. Each chosen software design and foundation has strengths and limitations, so I don't expect that every request can be met as some of them may not even be possible.
But for now, to close and stay on topic - let's go for a clean well developed instructional tips, like an FAQ or knowledge base, or tutorials, leave the rants to this thread, and maybe also develop a recommendations/looking for/improvements, much like most software companies have.
I know there are many on this forum are capable and if you can't do pictures, but can do text instructions, that is fine, a second person who can add pictures and build on it could put out a revised version.
Great idea, Bruce
So if Navigatr is supposed to be a "upgrade" and so much better then can someone from Rogers please tell me how to:
1) get the info banner with the time left on a current live tv show
2) how to get the current time of day while watching live TV
3) how to start watching a show that is in the process of recording before the recording is finishe (is Navigatr really bringing us back to VCR technoligy)
4) when watching a recording how to bring up the elapsed time
5) when watching a recording how to check the info on the program without having to stop the recording and go back to the stupid nav interface then resume playing
6) how to check scheduled shows while watching TV or a recorded show
7) how to check what channel a recorded show or a show scheduled to record is on
These are just a few of the simple common things I did regularly with the nextbox interface before Rogers forced this navigatr on us and tried to call it a "upgrade" when clearly it's just taken away all the useful functions we used to have and given us a very limited interface with about the same level of technology as a VCR
I have only had Navigatr for a week and it seems to work , not great, but ok. I did not see anything really wrong with the previous system. ( I have a NB 3 but not whole home)
Then I see the post above specifically this one
3) how to start watching a show that is in the process of recording before the recording is finished
You can't do that? I and I'm sure many others record shows and carefully start to watch the recording after 10-15 minutes so that one can skip most of the ads. I guess the effect will be that people will just record the show and not watch any ads at all.
To answer your questions:
1) Press the INFO button on the remote control. The channel banner includes time the program started, and the time it will end...but not how many minutes are left in the current program.
2) To get the current time, press GUIDE on the remote control. Check out the video preview window (top-right) - the current time is displayed.
3) Press LIST button on the remote and open (the tile of) the program that has started recording (but not yet finished). Press UP arrow, then RIGHT arrow to highlight the "Scheduled" tab. Scroll down and click "Watch".
4) There is no easy way to view the elapsed time when watching a recording. You can start playing the content, then press the PAUSE button on the remote. A progress bar appears at the bottom of the screen, with a white dot denoting the current position in the recording. The number on the right side of the progress bar is the time remaining. I would love to see this information in the "info" bar.
5) You cannot view the details of a recorded item without being kicked back to the "Recordings" screen. Not sure why the info banner (seen when pressing 'info' on live TV) does not appear.
6) You can press the LIST button on the remote control to access the "Recordings" screen. When watching live TV, you will continue hearing audio but see no picture. When watching pre-recorded content, it will stop (pause). I don't know why recorded content needs to stop - leave that choice up to the user and treat it as live (let it play in the background while you manage recordings and content).
7) The channel number content was recorded from does not appear until you begin playing the recorded content (see top-left). I agree this is silly and must be addressed in the next software update.
Anyone else getting pixelation with ROD on NB3 with Navigatr?
Happened while watching a show last night. Thought it was likely a fluke. Then it happened again today while watching another show on ROD. I was ready to watch another 1/2 show we missed and wife says "I can't watch any more shows like this". So we watched something else that we had recorded.
Never had any issues with ROD on RTN guide.
Thanks for the info although honestly even the things you can do are still way more inconvienient then they were on the old system, and some are just not practical like having to go into the guide system so the tv pic is too small to see just to check the time of day, and even checking anything with the info button is a pain since the banner it brings up is way to big and not translucent like the old one. The other big problem is that even if you can get the info you want the look is horrible and makes it near impossible to watch a program or recording while checking anything
Nearly all posts I have see about the Netbox Navigatr are negative.
I would like to make a positive suggestion. When you press the LIST button, you get a very poor display of information on the programs recorded or scheduled to be recorded.
I recommend you tell your CISCO programmers to let the user set a VIEW in SETTINGS that allows them to choose different VIEWS like you do in Windows-File-View. You should be able to display the LIST of programs (i.e. files) as large icons, small icons, tiles, list or detail. Check out Windows File View if you don't know what I mean.
I prefer the DETAIL view so I can see exactly what I have recorded or scheduled. Right now you can record a series of 3 to 6 shows and you can't tell which is the first one based on the information displayed for the current tile view. You have to select each one in order to see if it is Part 1, Part 2 or Part 3, etc. I would rather see the DETAIL for a recorded or scheduled list so that I don't have to SELECT each tile to figure out what it is, then EXIT, then SELECT the next one, then EXIT, etc. etc. etc.
You should also be able to set a FILTER so that you can list the recorded and scheduled programs separately, then toggle between the two. Right now I have to scroll down through my 94 recorded programs to see what I have scheduled. This is a real waste of time and very poor User Interface design.
I hope this helps you to fix your exceptional problems with Netbox Navigatr.
since my nextbox was updated to the new navigatr, I cannot figure out how to change the video source using the up/down buttons I used to use. I receive a "not available" error message when I try to move up to another video source. Can someone provide some help?
Navigatr programing interface updated in our area 3 days ago. Scheduals , Movies and SHOMI etc. are loaded OK.
SEARCH feature however does not work. Will show "NOT FOUND" even when a program is known to be available.
Doing search will partially work when typing in first few letters, some titles with those first letters will show up, however they seem to be only titles that appear "graphically" on one of the "lists" eg, "New Releases" or "Kids Zone".
Many known movies or TV shows (including SHOMI selections) are NOT displayed in the found seach list, even if an exact spelled matching title is used.
Have read on previous post from last year that it takes a few days for the search list to be populated, but as SOME seach results work, and other dont, and since the full schedual seems to have loaded fine, I am wondering what is the cause.
Certainly, 3 days should be enough to load ALL searchable indexes. (Resetting does not help- only a wasit of time for the re-boot)
Is anyone else experiencing this problem at this time/date for this area (Georgina/Keswick ON)?
Search use to work well for checking all program services (SHOMI, On Demand, PVR etc)....with this update (how do I find its version number?EDIT: Settings/System Information. UI Ver: 17334/28392) it seems so limited, I have to believe it is not working.
Thanks for your own advice or experences.
Gets very frustrating not having any other way to access a known show (SHOMI) that does not appear one of the 'drop-down' prorgam menues.
Eg, why can I not type in a known SHOMI program (Twilight Zone- the original TV Show) and have it play or the episode selection appear? There is no other "entry" method other than to find it with SEARCH and then select it for playing.
Be great if SEARCH worked, but no other work around for acesssing the full SHOMI and on demand library.
The program video on many channels/programs now only fills HALF the TV screen!
Go to (push) MENUE button on your remote. SHould bring up the new format of selection list that will have "settings" in the lower right side.
select "Settings" and a list will appear that starts with "Appearance".
Select "Appearance", and a selction list will appear that iclude
TV TYPE , VIDEO OUTPUT, VOD RESOLUTION
you can then try diffent settings for your TV type,But may have to try different settings for your own situation.
Pressing Video Seletion gives you options that seem to affect the SD picture, and will make it fill the screen completely, BUT it may also do the same for HD pictures and make them appear too big and you will lose the edges of the picture frame....I used the "streach" setting so Standard Def channels and content at least streach horizontally to make the picture bigger...
Its all very confusing, as it seems to depend on if the channel is an HD channel , AND/OR if the programing content is being sent in SD or HD format. ( within THOSE formats are other types of formats; eg 720 HD, 1080 P HD, 1080i hD 16;9 SD and HD etc..
I hope this is what you were looking for.
If anyone has better info on how to make the now HAlf screen SD picture fill the screeen, yet HD appear as it should, PLEASE let us know!
Hey, ROGERS!!!! Are you out there, listening??? Hello!!!
Everyone is saying..."Go back to your previous system, now!!" Before you lose your customer base. Or is this a message to say "Pain is good for you, and you will like it!"
Face it, the younger generations (Less than 40 years of age) don't watch TV. They stream on their cell phones and tablets. It appears your Navigatr is aimed at more computer savvy younger folk. Your infliction of all this pain is affecting those you need to keep most. That's right the older generation. As we get older we don't like change and certainly not when it is very uncomfortable. We also do not like to be kept in the dark.
For heaven's sake Rogers, send a message out. The silence is deafening!
I do not really care about seeing a "picture-graphic" for the program, when only PART of the text for the title shows up...I would rather see the full title and NOT have to depend on the graphic to reconginze is the show I want.
(I am refering to the search and movie selection sections, not the "program schedual" section, as it atleast will scroll the title into full view as you advance the time slot)
The channel "reminder" function not working properly...
In the old version, I was able to set a time as "reminder" to watch particular channel, when one minute before the set time, a reminder screen will pop up and ask whether I wish to watch it now or cancel, IF I DON'T DO ANYTHING, IT WILL AUTOMATIC SWITCH TO THE SET CHANNEL WHEN THE SET TIME IS REACHED, that is great because I can be away from the remote and knowing my up coming program will be automatic switch over, BUT
The new version doesn't so that anymore, I have to run over and grab the remote and select "watch now" or "decline", THE PROBLEM IS if I select "watch now" I will be missing the last minute of my current program, and if I am away from the remote control, the channel just stay put on the current channel......it's annoying and totally defeat the purpose.
