I dont remember the exact amount per text.. its something like 75c
You would be best, to turn OFF your roaming data.. as you said, will stop any extra data charges. make sure to do this, well before you even get near to the border.
If you say both have iphones and use imessage, that will not work with roaming data off, but should be able to still send as text
(may just have to force it to send as text)
