Rogers buy-back PVR/HD box?!?

BFlow
I Plan to Stick Around

We discontinued our TV service yesterday and so dropped off the rental PVR we had to the local store. The gentleman noticed that we also owned another PVR and HD box (DCX3510 and 700 respectively). He said SOMETHING about "We'll buy those back from you...if you get TV service again" but now that I think about it that doesn't make sense. He also said Atlantic Canada is moving to a "new system" in 3 days and the DCX boxes wont be handed out anymore....or something.

I'm totally confused. I was so focused on doing the equipment return I didn't pay close enough attention.

Can anyone shed light on what he was trying to tell me?

Hi @BFlow!

Gosh, we are certainly disappointed to hear you've decided to cancel your TV services with us. 🙁 Any particular reason for this? We love getting any feedback that will help us improve as a business!

As for the store agent mentioning the buyback of your cable TV boxes, I do believe he was referring to our on-going promotion for customers who are moving to our Ignite TV services who have the ability to trade in their owned NextBoxes for a Credit. Here is some more detailed information on how it works for those who may be interested:

Customers residing in our cable footprint who activate Ignite TV services with us, will receive a $25 bill credit for each eligible NextBox 2.0 or 4K they trade-in and will receive a $50 bill credit for each eligible NextBox 2.0, 3.0 or 4K PVR they trade-in. The credit is tax inclusive. Customers can trade in as many eligible boxes as they want. This offer was made available on October 2, 2018, and may expire at any time.

Please note the following points to mention:

  • The Ignite TV installation must be completed before you can trade-in an eligible box. After the installation, an Ignite TV Concierge agent will contact you to review your order and discuss your options.
  • You will be issued an electronic UPS waybill by email to print and use in the return of your box. One waybill per box/package. **Technicians cannot return the boxes on behalf of the customer**
  • Only boxes that are listed in your account history within the last 6 months are eligible for the trade-in credit.
  • After the equipment has been processed in our database, it can take up to 2 billing cycles for the credits to be applied to the new Ignite TV account.

I hope this information is useful! 😁

UPDATE

As of May 4, 2021, Digital TV customers switching to an Ignite TV bundle can no longer get a bill credit when they trade in their eligible owned NextBox(es) as this offer is no longer available. Thank you for understanding!

Yeah that doesnt really make sense.
I guess atlantic might be different than Ontario, etc (as it used different equipment)... but I really dont see it being that different.

My understanding, rogers has NEVER done buybacks on boxes.

I think they are getting the IGNITE stuff out there now?
(and then hopefully.. its then the same across the board! same hardware and not different like right now)
All new users likley then will be signed up on this service.

That doesnt mean that those boxes are completely useless.
My guess is that they will keep going on the regular cable service TV for a good 5-10 years min.
You could sell them privately to someone with the service still.

@BFlowMaybe he meant they would buy the boxes back, then rent them to you with coverage?

That I believe explains perfectly what he was mentioning to us. Thank you.

As to your question about us cancelling, while it may be hard to believe, we simply do not watch TV any more. 🙂

Its true, I also cancelled my conventional Television service over a year ago, My family is quite busy with our careers, my wife and I work long shifts, when we are not working, we are taking care of our two small children. when that is all said and done there is no time left in the day to enjoy television.

I do have a Television at my office where I work and its on the news so I do get my share of news fix, we also sometimes put sports on when its a majour event like Rogers AT&T Cup or the NBA Finals or Champions League. and same goes for my wifes work she has TV's at her work place so she will catch the local news and weather report in the background when shes working away. but ya not everyone needs television.

another 2 cents, when a company offers to buy back equipment from you, it actually might be a good thing for some people. Some people are known to but the boxes outright, these boxes are expensive to buy out right, i think it was like $400 or more, some TV sets cost like $99, so imageine ,a $99 dollar TV set you would still need a $400 dollar or more hd box or hd pvr to watch your shows, that is why some people rent instead of buying, but ya when you buy them, they eventually get obsolete, yes ignite tv is the new de facto standard and the existing digital cable platform will eventually be decommissioned, and when it does, do u want to have a pile of useless cable boxes lying around that you spent top dollars on but cant use? not really.

Re: Rogers buy-back PVR/HD box?!?

Thanks for the info.
Is the offer still available and which boxes are eligible?

Re: Rogers buy-back PVR/HD box?!?

Good morning and welcome, @bobble!

Yes, this offer is still available. 🙂

The boxes that are eligible are as follows:

For the $25 Credit:

  • NextBox 2.0 (4642)
  • NextBox 2.0 (8600)
  • NextBox 4K (10244)

For the $50 Credit:

  • NextBox 2.0 PVR (8642)
  • NextBox 3.0 PVR (9865)
  • NextBox 4K PVR (10455)

Hope that helps!

Regards,

RogersCorey

Re: Rogers buy-back PVR/HD box?!?

Re: Rogers buy-back PVR/HD box?!?

Hi @opieone28,

Thanks for posting your question in the Rogers Community Forums, we appreciate it!

By any chance, did you have an opportunity to review my previous post above? There, I've provided some useful information on how the offer works. Upon your activation or migration over to Ignite TV, you should have received a follow-up call from your designated Ignite Concierge agent to confirm how the installation went and to see if there is anything else that you need. At this time, they are also supposed to verify if you have any owned Nextboxes to trade-in for a credit. Have you spoken to your Ignite Concierge agent as yet?

To contact our dedicated Ignite TV Concierge Team, please see below:

Phone Number: 1.866.299.3622

  • Option #1: Ignite Concierge
  • Option #2: Technical Support
  • Option #3: Dial the extension of your Ignite Concierge directly

Re: Re: Rogers buy-back PVR/HD box?!?

Two days ago Rogers took my owned digital boxes, claiming they will eventually credit $50 for the PVRs and $25 for the non-pvr.  Have to be NEXTBOX, though, not the older ones.

@ColdGranite did you ask them about buying them back? Or did they approach you?

Re: Rogers buy-back PVR/HD box?!?

The switchover/purchase conversation was long and involved.  It had started as a chat, later became a phone call.

Somewhere during that phone discussion the topic of the old boxes came up.  I cannot swear who brought it up, but I think it went something like this:

We started talked about what Rogers equipment I had to return... the modem, obviously, but I owned the boxes.  She confirmed it on the account... that yes I owned them,  and that's where she mentioned the "credit" policy (I think).  She emailed me a QR code that you go to the post office and get a label printed up and can ship the boxes to some particular address.

But when I checked with a Rogers store about returning the modem... they told me that I could bring the old boxes in as well, and they would handle the shipping themselves.   You don't get the credit right away, not until the shop actually gets and "processes" the boxes... and it will probably take longer than shipping them yourself, but it eliminates the hassle.  And I don't know if this label that they print has paid-for shipping, LOL 🙂

I felt that I had happened to stumble onto a particularly customer-friendly agent... And my Rogers-store guys  were quite customer friendly as well.

And since Ignite plus phone installed flawlessly, I was pretty pleased with my switchover to Ignite.

Now only to see if I can get it to work as flawlessly in "Bridge" mode.

Re: Rogers buy-back PVR/HD box?!?

I realize this is an older post, however I just came across it after having an exchange with a Rogers agent this afternoon. We switched to Ignite in Dec 2019 and at that time the Rogers installer indicated that if we return our equipment, we would be eligible for a credit, however, he failed to mention that it was "owned equipment" that we needed to return, not the rented ones, so I returned the rented ones and didn't see a credit. Don't ask me why I didn't realize that I wouldn't be eligible for a credit on rented equipment, that's another story and part of pandemic brain at this point.

However, I do have the owned boxes still, I know its says owned equipment can be returned within 6 months, but due to the pandemic and the installer not being specific, can we still return these for a credit?

probably not but you can "sell" them privately on places like kijiji or craig's list or ebay or face book marketplace or local buy and sell forums online

@LeeseyI suspect Rogers offering come buy-back credit would have been an incentive to migrate to Ignite, not something  they'd give you after the fact. Selling the units privately, or giving them to a friend still on Rogers cable would be the way to go. I have 3 orphan PVRs after leaving Rogers cable I should get rid of, but they're probably not worth much anymore.

They may not be worth anything to you but to someone else in need of one it may be worth a lot.  Some one may have digital cable, who may happen to have a defective box, and probably cant afford to buy a new one to replace it, they will  be happy to take a used one off someone you may be able to put a smile on someone's face who is going thru a difficult time and needs a box

Re: Rogers buy-back PVR/HD box?!?

Hello,

We want to return our box and the Ignite TV concierge has not contacted us. We did have a return label in our package (to send stuff back to NCRC in North York, ON). Is this the label we use to return our old owned Nexbox?

Probably.

When you made the agreement to go ignite, you should have mentioned that you had owned equip to return for cred.  At that time, they should have mentioned that they will be doing one or more of the following:

1.Send you a label.

2.Send you a QR code by email, which you can print or put on your phone, and take to Canada post who would print the label for you.

3. Send you a link, at which there would be a pre-prepared label, which you could print for yourself.

If you are not sure, just contact Rogers again, and tell them your situation and that "I need a label to return my owned equipment for credit"... and they should offer one or more of the above.  The emailed QR code is quickest, you can just package up the equipment, and have Canada Post print and slap the label on it.

@AllyGAs I understand it, the buy-back of customer owned digital PVRs was an incentive to encourage customers to switch to Ignite. Normally Rogers would never buy back customer owned equipment, even if it was purchased from Rogers. Personally, I have 3 PVRs I own. One is a freebie SD PVR given to me by Rogers to subscribe to digital cable in 2009, the second is a refurbished  SA8300HD I bought off Shopping Channel in 2013 and I have another SA8300HD PVR that was given to me by my daughter when they cut the cord. When Ignite was first offered there was no such buy-back incentive and I opted for IPTV from my ISP instead of Rogers because it suited my needs and was more economical.  In your case, if you are on the verge of switching to Ignite, go ahead and explore this incentive to buy your stuff. But good luck if you've already switched.
