Had my install today!
Tech was really good and knowledgeable (well as much as they can be this early)

I need to head out shortly, so this will be just a QUICK overview, go into MUCH more detail about all the stuff when I get back later tonight.

Modem set up,  put at demarc.  Built in range was decent, but not great for my 3rd box, so installed a MESH wireless.  Seems to work well from what I can see.  (I am running NOT bridged right now.. as my RT-N66U is getting a little long in the tooth.)  I was able to get 300+/25 on wireless (on 500u).  Wired seems fine.

X1 boxes are TINY, like android box sized.
Seem to work well though, VERY fast to respond.  Recording work.  Playback works.  Playback via cell/ipad works.
Cant seem to find where to change the wifi network right now.. will ask the concierge when I talk to them tomorrow.

Again, will write a much larger review later tonight.  If you have questions, let me know and I can try and see/check about it.

Re: Rogers Ignite TV Installation/Experiences/Questions

I think its just a matter of a very few number of customers, and those customers are concentrating on the TV services instead of the modem and router services that the modem provides.  Just to note, the ARRIS XB6 modem is an Intel Puma 7 modem, as is the Hitron CODA-4582 modem.  There is a difference in the wifi capabilities, or potential wifi capabilities as the Arris XB6 has a much better wifi chipset onboard.  The only question is, what's enabled, and what's not enabled?

There is a Technicolour Broadcom BCM-3390 based XB6 which is out for employee testing.  That modem, in theory, should be much better than the Intel Puma 7 modems.

Installing a 2nd ignite tv box

I just had ignite installed and am quite happy with it so far, only issues thus far is the home phone suddenly stopping twice in 2 weeks and the only fix was to call in and have them reset everything on their end, hopefully that is the end of that.

My main concern and the reason for this post is the cost of having an additional box installed... $49.99... what exactly is involved to have such a price tag attached to it?  Plug in, choose wifi, done.

Am I missing something that would warrant such a price of install?

I also saw a post indicating that some components of the  protocol are encrypted for the tv side of things. I have forgotten the specifics and don't know if it affects the ability to be used as an internet device.

A couple of things that I've noticed recently:

  • I've noticed recently that the quality of the video is not as good as it should be. Specifically, the video appears to be stuttering at times as if it is buffering. This happens on recorded video as well as live TV. I have five STBs scattered throughout the house and it doesn't matter which STB i'm watching on or even on my desktop computer om which I also watch at times. Download speed is good at all locations, varying between 400+Mbps to 600+Mbps at my desktop which is connected directly to the Rogers modem/router and over 350 Mbps in the basement STB on the other end of the house which is a wired connection to an Asus RT-AC68U router in AiMesh mode. I also have a desktop connected to this router and on which I am getting 500+Mbps download. WiFi speeds are very good varying between 100 Mbps and as high as 388 Mbps depending on location throughout the house.
  • Another more annoying issue that has happened a couple of times now, is that while watching a live programme, the screen will suddenly go black for anywhere from 5 to 10 seconds an then the program will return. I have also had the STB reboot itself while watching TV or suddenly stop working with a message that it can't connect to the network. The only option is to unplug the power to the STB and reboot it.
  • Finally, when trying to watch a recorded programme I get the message: "Well that didn't go as planned... we're having trouble playing this recording. We checked for this program On Demand but, unfortunately , it is not available. Pleas try watching another program." Tried another recording and got the same message.

It seems there are more bugs appearing as time goes on.

If you go to view bundles at the bottom of the Ignite promo page, you can build up a TV/Internet/Home phone bundle that is comparable to what you have now.  I couldn't get past the choice of Home phone option, but I called in to get those last features.  The comparison for me was about 10.00 then the "regular price" of my current Navigatr/Hitron/Home phone promotion, but way above the promotion level.  It is comparable to a similiar promotion package of the "other guys" on similiar feature set, so at the moment, the regular price of my current services taxes included after promotions end is still lower.  No justifiable reason for me to switch, will see when end of term comes for promotion what they offer.  We will probably be cutting cord and going wholesale Internet and VOIP home phone or no home phone, as we are at our maximum price point for these services given we are on fixed incomes.

You can call in an have them compare your current services to the new ones and then decide.  There are pros and cons between the new model - no battery backup for phone, you can't go back to home phone if you change, you can port your number to the new service, but not back again and installation costs to consider.

Hope that helps you to decide what you think of the model and the costing structure and service options.

@timlocke  Other than the discussions of bridging to a router and how the TV side of things work, you are right, there is little discussion on the modem and WIFI on the Internet side of things and comparisons to Hitron, nor is there much discussion of the Home Security system, or home phone under the new model.

It would be good to see these other features discussed in more depth, but I am not sure how many people are taking on the new model who would be the type to come to the forums for discussion.

@StatsMan  At least the programmers have a sense of humour in their alert-error messages.

I presume that all the Ignite TV IP addresses are IPV6. It would seem pretty silly if they were V4!    Should be obvious but a Rogers technical description of Ignite should explicitly say so.

Re: Rogers Ignite TV Installation/Experiences/Questions

Hello @StatsMan,

I can imagine how frustrating it must be trying to enjoy your favourite programs on TV when the picture quality is breaking up or constantly buffering on you.

I have been using Ignite TV for several months and these issues haven't happened to me so I definitely want to get to the bottom of this for you to see what is going on. We'd like to run some tests on your equipment to ensure the signal levels are within specification for the service to function properly.

Please send us a Private Message to @CommunityHelps so we can get started on this for you. If you are not familiar with our Private Messaging system please click here.

If you prefer to call in to speak to a live agent you also have the option to contact our Ignite Center of Excellence team by calling 1-833-344-6483.

We look forward to your response!

I had my install this week and so far its has been very good.   When they did the install they tried their router first and the signal strength was very week at point in my house so I had them put their router in bridge mode and use my Asus router which gets 400+ Mbps via Wifi at the furthest parts of the house.   Rogers router was less than 50.  So bridge mode was best solution for me.   I have a question about recording programs on the old PVR set up you could pick if you only wanted to record a show everyday at a specific time.  Like CTV New at 6pm every day same time slot, now if I choose CTV News and pick new episodes it records the 3 times.   Anyone know if there is a setting to just record the timeslot you want without having to do each day separate, the Nextbox used to have a manual entry option where you could just pick the time of day you wanted to record also.

Thank you

Re: Rogers Ignite TV Installation/Experiences/Questions

Yes CTV News, must be recording London. All new episodes and the CTV news. Because the title is the same for morning evening and night.

They need to add an extra selection "This time slot only". The Netbox had that. This would also help with other shows. I find networks, speciality channels especially, have a habit of marking their shows as new when they are not. So you will get the same show weekly on Thursday at 8pm also "new" on Friday at 1am or on their west coast time slot channel.

I know no solution.

Frustrating. Listen Rogers !

You should be able to set manual recordings. I've not actually tried it but if you check out the link below it has the instructions.

I Plan to Stick Around

So I've been an Ignite TV subscriber since the end of June. For weeks now, my Ignite TV Boxes (all three of them) will randomly freeze in the screensaver mode. The only way to get them to respond is to unplug the power cord and reboot them.

I can't discern any pattern for the behaviour (like, sometimes it will happen and in the exact same scenario the next day, it will be fine.) It happens to all three boxes regardless of how much use the TV itself gets.

I contacted Rogers and changed the screensaver settings to the max 5 hours, but that's really a bandaid.

The only other thing of note is that I run my Rogers modem in bridge mode and run a google wifi mesh network as my network. I can't see how this would impact it, but maybe?

Anyone else have this experience? Help!

So, instead of putting the Rogers router in bridge mode, try turning off wifi on both bands on the Rogers router. Your Google wifi mesh will be the de facto distributor of wifi signals throughout the house.

Thanks - I'll give that a try. Seems odd that this could be the cause.

No you can not do manual recording method. It is not a one off show we wish to record. This is a recording we wish to do EVERY DAY at 6pm. SO I would be sitting there setting the recording for everyday for a two week span. Then doing it again two weeks later, and so on and so on, forever.

Simple "record new shows this time slot only." or on the manual recording possibly "repeat daily".

I assume that the manual recording doesn't offer a "daily" option?  I'm surprised that IgniteTV doesn't offer a "Timeslot" option.  Perhaps they will in the future, although I've often missed recordings when the time changes by a few minutes or an hour, etc - that shouldn't happen much with a programme like the nightly news.

You could set a bunch of single recordings.  I'm not sure how it works on IgniteTV, however, on Navigatr once you find the programme you hit the red record button, then hit the day+ button to go to the next day, then hit red record again on the same programme. It would take me perhaps a minute to set the weeks (or in your case 2 weeks) recordings....

Yes I could but am trying to avoid having to do this manually, to cumbersome and you can easily forget to do it. There is no timeslot option anywhere. Navigator you could record new this time slot only.

Not with Ignite.

Yes, you can record, for example, the 6:00 PM news on CTV Toronto. When you go to the guide and find  the news at 6:00 PM, press the red record button on the remote. You will notice that beneath the title of the programme that you are recording, ie, CTV News Toront, it shows the time slot of the programme that you wish to record ... Today 6:00 - 7:00p on CTVTO ... You are then asked whether to record “just this episode” or “all episodes.” Click on all episode, which will take you to the Record Options screen. You will notIce that under channels it shows CTVTO Only. Press confirm and it will record only the 6:00 PM news broadcast.

@StatsMan: But "CTV News Toronto" also airs at 12Noon and 11:30PM, so if you select all episodes, those will be recorded also, won't they?  Or are you saying that your method somehow magically eliminates those and only records at 5:59PM?
