Apparently some 986HD pvrs are 500gb and others 1tb.
Is it easy to tell from something on the exterior as to what size it is ? Or perhaps after a certain manufacturing date ?

I don't believe there's any way to be sure from the outside, however, you can go into the PVR's diagnostics and the information is there.
With the PVR on and booted up, hold the exit key on the remote until the power indicator light on the front panel flashes. Press the down arrow twice in quick succession, followed by the number 2. This will take you to the diagnostics. Scroll down to HDD Info. A 1TB HDD will show about 931 GB. A 0.5TB drive will show 4XX GB. Press Exit again to exit diagnostics.
I don't believe there were many 9865s with 0.5 TB drives.
