Poor GSM vs Good HSPA+ coverage

Just returned from Northern Ontario.

Discovered that there's lots of new HSPA+ coverage on the major highways, but my pay-as-you-go GSM phone wouldn't work.

What's the deal?

Isn't Rogers expanding its GSM coverage along with the HSPA+ ????

Doesn't look like it according to the coverage map.

So is GSM dead technology?

Do we have to upgrade to an expensive pay-as-you-go smartphone?

Hello brucelazerte

Sadly most carriers are giving up on the GSM network as now they have 3G, 4G & LTE. They are investing more money & time into those networks then GSM sadly.

Ah thanks, I was afraid of that.

Guess we'll just have to upgrade our phone before heading North next time.

Hello brucelazerte

It sucks. I to use a normal flip phone when going up north unless i bring my S4 / Z10 with me for my buddies for music.

Even then i barely get any service if not any service. The problem is carriers are dumping the GSM network as we have seen within most of the carriers.
