For several months now I have been asking Rogers, SpeedTV, and others what we in Canada will see after August 17th on the channel that has been known as Speed or Speedvision since we started receiving it in 1997, and failed to receive an answer. TV listings for August 17 and later have now made it apparent that we will be receiving an even more watered-down version of what we have been getting in recent years.
Fox in the U.S. bought this channel several years ago, and has been intentionally working to kill it off by removing more and more of the motorsports programming from this formerly motorsports oriented channel, replacing it with car collector, game and 'reality' show programming. Now even that will be continuously repeated loops of old shows, with very little or nothing that is new. Their intention has been to start their own general sports channel to compete with ESPN in the U.S., and now to attempt to force the American cable and satellite carriers to replace Speed with the new Fox general sports channel. The U.S. carriers who have not yet signed on for that new channel will continue to receive the pointless and almost entirely non-motorsports Speed channel as a punishment for failing to agree to pay for the new Fox Sports 1 channel.
Yet this punishment channel appears to be what we will continue receiving in Canada. Surely there must be something about this that fails to conform to their contracts with Canadian carriers, if not CRTC regulations regarding permitted non-Canadian channels, and could lead to it being removed and hopefully replaced as soon as possible?
Note that the Fox-owned Speed channel in Australia has remained very much a motorsports channel.
And most of Europe including Britain has a motorsports channel (not owned by Fox) called Motors TV.
Please, as soon as possible, replace the Speed channel we presently receive with one of these or another motorsports channel if others exist.
Solved! Solved! Go to Solution.
The problem is not Rogers. Its the CRTC & Fox sports as they need agreements & all. Rogers can NOT do anything until the CRTC gives them the approval to have it.
I just changed my channel package a few motnhs ago mainly because I wanted the Speed Channel and BBCC to view racing and Top Gear. Once again our service providers seem to have free range to cancel, delete or add to your package as well as change rates at will. I can just imagine the uproar if you ordered a car with an AM/FM radio with a CD but upon delivery found out the manufacturer decided to delete the CD player but charged you the same price for the vehicle. I for one would tell them to take the car and place it where the sun don't shine! And over time, that is exactly what I intend to do with all of Roger's services. Once my cell contract is up in 6 months I will exercise the only contract clause a Rogers customer can use. I will take my business elsewhere. The same is true of my internet service and cable. After all I get almost daily offers from the competition to sign on but have remained loyal to Rogers up until now. When they treat customers with such arrogance and disdain I think it's time to move on.
Every company in Canada and the States is the same as car vs cable debate a couple thinks your paying a large amount of cash for the car and are not getting a service provided to you every day as asoon as you pick up the car thats it with cable the provaide you with a service each day.
Today I turned my tv to the Speed Channel to watch Nascar Qualifying and to my amazement there was a notice that
I could not receive this channel because Rogers no longer carried it. I know that Fox Sports One is carrying this
in the U.S. Do you (Rogers) have any plans to have Nascar Qualifying shown
Speed was one of the few channels I watched on a regular basis. It's extremely frustrating to pay for all those channels and hardly watch any of them. As soon as I figure out a way to get live sports via the internet, I'll be cutting off or at least cutting back on my TV package.
well for now, I have a live stream of FS1 running on a small android media player inside of XBMC - quality is hit and miss - 720p sometime and 480P other times.
I can see why some people are cutting the cable. The amount of shows available on these boxes is incredible.
Thank you Rogers for pushing me to look at a cable alternative..... . of a marketing strategy...
i'll be quite frank with you even if thats not my name, rogers really does not care if your paying 100 a month or even 200 a month, rogers is not going to bend over back wards to keep speed vision (or speed channel). The decision was made by the owners of the chanenl, which is 20th Century Fox sports incorporated. They are the owners of the channel, speed was a US chanenl, they changed the format and name to a new one, it complied just fine with the us regulations however the new channel was not qualified to continue to broadcast here, so fox kept the old defunkt speed vision for canada, because all the carriers had carriage deals with the channel already so they couldnt just pull the plug like that, anyways now that the carriage deals are up, rogers has no way to renew, its literally impossible, dont blame them dont get mad at them, they have no control. bell is losing speedvision too, and ibet u any dinero/money that cogeco, video trom, and telus will also loose speed vision as well once the agreeements run up.
there was no future plans for that channel,. if u wanna watch broadcasts illegal for distrobution in canada over the internet with you xbmc or chrome cast or ex box 360, then fine by me but im not gonna help u if u have problems.
thats right no canadian carrier can carry it but the good news is you can see if a canadian network will buy the rights to the programming that the former but now defunkt speed vision is carrying, what if tsn and sports net starting to air nas car and formula one? then i will be happy, though i dont care bout nascar
This is what Rogers said originally.
"Each television service provider makes its own determinations as to what channels to offer. To provide customers with the best possible entertainment experience, we review our offerings and makes changes to our packages from time to time.
We recognize supporters of this channel will be disappointed with this decision and hope youll understand these decisions are not taken lightly. As we said above, if the channel provider will come to an agreement that allows us to offer the channel to a more specialized audience at a reasonable rate, wed be happy to make it available".
They had a choice. They were not going to pay whatever Fox wanted and that was that. They both called each other bluffs and it was easy since they had no vested interest if they dropped the channel. They could care less what people want to see . they stand to make out well finanically also as they said your bill would not change. One less contract to pay out, yet revenue stays at the same level. Gaurenteed there were dicussions with all the other carriers on this. it was a united front against Fox.
Where was the option to have speed become a specialized channel with a charge? Nobody asked us? Bet most of us would be happy to pay for that channel.
yeah these are not those channels. I have no idea how they do it but there is hundreds of streams available from all over the world. Very confusing to find what you need. The easiest way will be to use one of the many services still available that will let you subscribe to Dish or Direct TV like many of us did back in the dark ages when we couldnt get HBO, Speedvision, ESPN etc and a pile of other channels. We are back to that point of time I am afraid.
I see Speed is gone, I watch the Nascar race Hub, Nascar today the truck races. Fox 1 Sports has taken over Speed so please add it or reduce my bill accordingly.
That will never happen or if it ever did it would be years down the road. People have wanted ESPN for years but they will never get it since it is competition for SNa nd TSN. FS1 was aimed at ESPN in the US so theres a snowballs chance in . we will ever see it.
Interesting tactic with Rogers on their Facebook page - I like many people on there ranting over this and after a few posts I can no longer post there. My wife can, but not me. Really Rogers? Censoring the PO'd masses?
For those trying to say "It's not Rogers fault" -- Of course it's Rogers fault! They knew the US Speed Channel was disappearing a year ago when Fox made the official public announcement (March 5, 2013). I knew this, and I'm not in the TV business. Did you notice this thread has been going since early August? I would assume Rogers knows when their own contracts expire. Rogers had a year, probably longer, to do something to arrange for us to continue seeing what we're now missing, and did nothing.
And yes, the CRTC controls what channels get new licenses, or get added to the list of approved non-Canadian channels, but it is the cable/satellite/IPTV providers who 'sponsor' the applications of those non-Canadian channels seeking to be added. A year is more than enough time to make it through the process.
And you know Rogers owns a bunch of Sportsnet channels that can buy programming, right?
