Why is the pause function on Ignite TV so useless?
It lasts maybe 15 minutes at most and then cuts to live tv including turning the volume back on. The Nextbox was much better. The pause function lasted for at least 60 minutes. Is there any way to switch back to Nextbox from Ignite tv?

I wouldn't call 15 minutes useless. It is pause after all - most people would use it to go to the washroom, etc. However, if you wish to "pause live TV" instead of using the pause button, simply hit the "record" button instead. This will then record the entire programme and you can come back to it even if you're away for an hour or two, even if you expected to be away only a short time.
If you're watching a recording, you can also hit the stop button and come back to your programme (albeit with a couple of button presses, although there may even be a voice option?). This probably has something to do with the (limited) resources at the cloud recording end, although you could always recommend that Rogers increases the pause time - perhaps they will in the next firmware iteration.
You cannot "go back" to Nextbox. The only thing you could do is cancel Ignite package and subscribe anew to Nextbox package. I doubt that a 15 minute pause alone would cause that to be worthwhile, especially in light of the other features that Ignite brings to the table.
@1234444w43I never knew the Nextbox could pause a show for a whole hour before reverting to live TV. I have a SA8300HD and I think it goes to live before 15 minutes, even on recordings. But I can't remember the last time I watched live TV except for the news and such. If I pause a recording and don't know when I'll be back to finish watching, I'll just turn the box off and it will resume when I come back. I don't know how the Ignite TV cloud works, but I presume it would use a lot of resources for thousands of customers to pause programs for a long time. So like @57 suggested, record it and go back to it later.

With the nextbox, when you were watching live TV, it was always 'recording' while watching live.. so was very easy to pause for longer periods, etc.
With these boxes, its not actually recording locally (well not at least in the same way?) Normally when your watching something on ignite, its a STREAM. So my guess is yeah you pause the stream, but its not actually recording anything locally, etc.
Yes I wax told the same thingthat younwoud lose your num. But also asked about porting the number out to other IP telco. They said yes it can be ported out.
So there is your answer. ..port it out of Ignite, have them assign you a new number in ignite. then you can port it back in to rogers traditional offering.

One should never ask or discuss porting a number out. You may lose it if you do. One should discuss porting with the new provider who takes care of everything with the old provider. Any mention of closing your dealings with your existing provider before porting the number could cause a loss of your phone number.
I would have thought that escallating your situation to retentions would have resulted in something being made possible though.
I have a question regarding the amount of time you can pause a TV broadcast with Ignite TV. Last night I put the hockey game on pause between periods and went out to do a quick errand. I came back about 20 minutes later and the tv was playing. I tried putting it on hold again, but it wouldn't pause.
It looks like there's a maximum buffer time of about 15 minutes. Is this setting modifiable somewhere? I had Fibe previously and never had any issues or time limits with pausing live tv.

Bell is different because the programme is recorded on a physical device in your home, whereas Ignite is "in the cloud".
On the IgniteTV box, if I pause something I've recorded for too long -- by too long I mean like 5 minutes -- it just stops and goes back to normal TV.
This is NOT what I want If I've asked it to pause something I'm watching from a recording, it should pause until I tell it otherwise.
Is there a way to fix this?
@disco_stu : Looks like your post was moved to this existing thread. There is no way to "fix" this since IgniteTV uses servers in the cloud and any function that goes on for too long would require additional servers at additional cost, therefore a balance between functionality and cost needs to be found. If you're going to be away from the TV for more than a few minutes, you'll need to stop the programme and resume.
@57 Actually your answer is not very correct. I'm a software architect. I design software for a living.
If I designed this, all I would do is keep the time index in memory when the user pressed pause (it was paused at 23 minutes 2 seconds and 739 milliseconds). I would stop streaming from the server and keep any pre-fetched (buffered) content in memory as well. I could keep this state forever and wouldn't need continuously stream the recording from the cloud server. When the user pressed play, after 3 minutes or even 3 hours, I would start streaming from where I left off. No extra cloud server resources would be required while the recorded program is paused.
Obviously this would be different than pausing live TV. In that case, you cannot do an indefinite pause because the device has limited memory to buffer/cach the paused live tv content.

I'm not sure exactly how all this works. A time index might be OK provided the programme stays on the server (in it's original state). If it's not needed on the server (by other customers), then that's a different story and you'd need to leave the programme there for you alone.
I'm not sure how much of the programme could be kept in the local STB buffer, but I believe it's not much - say 15 minutes.
I believe that after the programme is over, it's "moved" into an "on-demand" state where commercials may be present and not available for skipping, etc. depending on rights granted by the rights holder. I'm sure you wouldn't like to watch commercials just because you pause TV for a longer time and who knows if your "pointer" would be able to find the programme in the "new location/state".
@disco_stu To resume a paused recording, press the Left Arrow (Last) button on your remote. The paused recording will be the last item in your history. Select it, and your recording will resume playing from where you paused it. Same goes for other paused content in your history.
If this does not work for you, check your Privacy settings... confirm that "Watch History" is set to On.
