New Rogers advanced Wi-Fi modem!

It appears to be another Hitron gateway.

Has anyone switched to this new gateway?
It also has a higher monthly rental cost.

Yes, Motorola modems have always been reliable, but its hard to believe that 6180 seems a bit dated as it only supports 8x4 channels. When somebody on current Ultimate and CGN3 can get up to 16 downstream channels.

And Hitron modem I mentioned before is exactly the same as modem component in CGN3, that it it supports 24x8 channels.

I only mention that one because the D2 surfboard modems from Motorola were rock solid. Ever since they switched to the D3 modems, there have been major issues with signal strength and dropped connections. Rogers does not seem to get this!

Let us know 🙂

Just remember with the datasheet.. as with ANY product from, well, just about any ISP.. they are rarely STOCK.  There may be features/things that are listed in the data sheets/manuals, which are NOT enabled by the ISP.

Just got the CGN2 red looking one. It is a giant peice of crap for wireless. Never seen such bad wifi signals. For those of you who have tried the CGN3 would you recommend it? Or is the better idea to get an asus n66u router and run the CGN 2 in bridge?

I got extreme plus in my condo and get 3/5 bars on CGN2 and get 1-3mbps when I speed test on wifi, but 50+ on lan. Yes it's wifi is that bad.

CGN3 has excellent wireless. I had it for three weeks and just returned yesterday because it has some important to me router functions disabled, namely port forwarding and USB ports. If you do not need to forward ports and do not need to share an external USB drive or printer through your network - CGN3 is all your need. Wireless performed exceptionally on both bands. Signal was very strong.

Hey, as per my knowledge all modems from rogers have the USB port disabled, not sure why but it would come in handy. also i want to go for the new Hitron CGN3 only for the stronger wifi range since the cisco one seems patchy in the basement.

Wireless performance on Cisco DPC3825 and Hitron CGNDM (yes, as one of the forum users correctly mentioned, the current Hitron gateway being offered is actually CGNDM application gateway (based on the pictures of the product from Hitron web-site) would be like day and night. I suggest going for it. But make sure you do not need to forward any ports. This feature is not available on Hitron!

i just picked up the advanced Hitron, and i did notice that it is a different model than the one on their site because this one is missing the usb input in the front, regardless internet works great around the house, no longer have patchy areas. I dont use port forwarding but sure would have loved if the USB was active so i can properly use the HDD and printer.

Hi Tedd,

did you ever get the port forwarding working on Hitron CGN-3 router? I can't get it to work even after spending numerous hours on it as well as searching on the internet. Technical Support from rogers is useless as this is beyond their level. to speak to a real tech person, they want to charge me.

Thanks.

Port forwarding SHOULD be up and working on that model now, as of the latest firmware.  A couple of people have confirmed it.

Might be that yours is not updated to the latest? You should be able to call in and see if they can push the firmware update out.

Port forwarding is kind of working on CGN3. I can forward some ports but not all that I used to forward. I am still playing with CGN3 firewall settings so there is still a chance of getting something more out of it.

You are right we went to the better modem because of the issues with the old one, paying almost double to have an even worse experience. They also via facebook promise to help me, has been now a week without response, they should be ashamed of themselves.

Thanks guys. Their technical support is absolutely useless. All they can help you is to connect to the internet and that's about it. Beyond that, they want to charge, which is ridiculous. Why bother offering something to the customers that they can't even support.

Finally after playing around with the firewall settings, I got it working.

Thanks.

Hi, Shkemu:

Would you please share your lucky combination of the firewall settings at CGN3 Which allowed you to forward all the desired ports?

Re: New Rogers advanced Wi-Fi modem!

I've Been Here Awhile

Since Vonage had made me disable the Firewall settings, I had a suspicion it was causing the issues. So I enabled it again and set it to Minimum. Here are the current settings:

Minimum Security (Low):

No application or traffic is blocked. This is the default configuration

Allow (WAN-To-LAN): all

Blocked:

IDS enabled
IDENT (port 113)

Ping From WAN: Deny

Hope it helps.

I'm Here A Lot

I was playing around to get my WD MY Cloud to work with the CGN3 and it was the firewall that caused the grief. The descriptions of the settings are not clear. When I set it to Minimum, it started working. The Firewall seems to be more focussed on preventing outbound more than inbound. Need to research more.

Does anyone have the link to the User Manual for the CGN3. The CGN2 manual is close enough but may not be complete.

I have yet been able to find a manual for it, even from the manufacturer 😞
