New Nextbox Navigator

BS
I'm a Senior Advisor

My wife was just moving through the new navigator and has the following questions, concerns.

The first screens for the guide are fine, but the fonts are a bit small, even on a 46 inch TV. We are all getting old, let's not forget us.

In the section for listing and managing recordings, the boxes cut off the full names of the shows, don't show dates, would rather have option of old list style with all details right in one spot.

When looking at multiple shows, you have to go to each listed show recorded, but there is no reference to the date until you highlight the show. Then this highlighted information on the show is even smaller and I have almost perfect vision after my cataract surgury, and I can barely read it. My wife can't read it at all. You do have the date on the top right that is in a bigger font, but the show information is almost unreadable and my 24 year old daughter who just came in also comment that it is almost unreadable.

Is there an option for increasing font size and changing to a list view rather than the boxes on the list of the recordings page. Don't like the box feature or the way the contents view at all for the above reasons. See little or benefit for this change.

Otherwise, I am kind of indifferent to the new layout, but do like some features.  I will probably turn off the banner across the bottom off in settings. I can get the same information from the guide.

Yes, there is a bit of getting used to change, but some of this change seems to be change for the sake of change. I do like that it takes less clicking to move around though, it just the display formats and font sizes that are creating legitimate problems for my family.

It was a rhetorical question, very feasible especially bundle #1.

It works fine right now inToronto and Ottawa and many other places.
I  am confident that Rogers can get the rest working over the decade or two.

Have you thought about giving the retention center a call. They seem to have more options available to them than the ordinary tech support and other groups. Perhaps they could swap out your box or come up with another solution. I have found that they were able to fix problems I had in the past with billing problems and other things.

The person is arguing that we are against Navigatr because its NEW and we just don't like to change.

They miss the point completely.

There is nothing NEW about it when it come to the PVR portion.

Its just same old PVR record/play/organize/delete in a different dress, one which does not fit well, has a few parts missing, and in some cases has wiped-out the things its supposed to help us manage.

People will adapt and even embrace change if there is some benefit/value.

As other have said, "Where's the beef with Navigatr ?"

Anyone recall what a phone looked like a few years ago ?  It was black, bulky, used indoors only, and had a tail.

No screen, no keyboard/just a dial, you could not move it more than few feet, and certainly lacked a camera. Heck it could not even play music, let alone let you watch TV on it !

I Plan to Stick Around

I'm disapponted that it's been almost a month and they still haven't fixed the font issue.  I don't even mind the tile feature but the font needs to be changed.  The name of the channel is so small you can't make it out at all.

I guess they really don't care.  I don't think it's a reason for me to switch to Bell for cable but it's really annoying.  I keep on waiting to see if they do an update that fixes the font issue but I guess it's going to take a few years at this rate to change anything.

The one thing that keeps me with Rogers is the customer service reps, most of them are pretty good and great service.  I was with Bell for Home Phone and their customer service is crap.   But Bell is always offering me really good deals to switch so I just might try it again and see how it goes if they give me a really good deal but it's a lot of work to switch services.

I can't imagine how terrible the roll out for the new government regulated cable packages and channels are going to be next year.  Rogers can't even get the Navigatr right I can't imagine the mess the new t.v. channel system will be.

I also called Rogers for a small issue last week and mentioned the Navigatr and the girl (who was super nice and helpful) told me she wasn't fully aware of the issues with it.  I was surprised since this is such a huge problem with the PVRs but I guess not everyone at Rogers is aware still.  She was so kind though and when I complained about the font, she wanted to find someone that could help me with it but I told her there was no solutions to it because I called in before for that reason.

I Plan to Stick Around

I noticed while watching a movie on Shomi last night that the skip forward control only works at one speed now. I used to be able to increase the speed I could scan forward or reverse from slow to fast. Now it just shows one diamond which can't be changed.

One other possible glitch. We had a power failure mid-way through the movie. The Box rebooted when the power came back on but I had to re-start the movie from the beginning. I think it used to remember the spot on the movie and you could resume.

Anyone else notice.  Using a NextBox 3 with Navigatr ... Otherwise seems to be working ok.

Sailorman:

I can't comment on the Shomi situation. I have Shomi in my Rogers package but I never find anything on it I want to watch.

But I can comment on the power failure experience. Last week during a storm in the Oshawa area, I experienced 2 power failures about 30 minutes apart. I was watching a recorded sports program at the time and in each instance the recording reverted back to the beginning when the NB3 had rebooted. So Navigatr is not storing an ongoing recording position for use in the event of power outage. As you also say, I think the previous RTN version had this capability. Perhaps someone still 'blessed' with RTN1 could comment.

Nope - in previous version (RTN 5.1 - and earlier versions) if you have a power failure, or the box freezes, or Rogers pushes out an update while you are watching a recording (as happened to me at 3am today) it will NOT keep your "bookmark" and you will have to search for the point you were at.  That was fun fast forwarding through a 4 hour race, but if you can't increase the fast forward speed, or indeed use it at all (as with On Demand) then it's a REAL pain.  This is the sort of thing Rogers COULD have spent development dollars on (fixing those sort of bugs, and others) instead of wasting it on this stupid new user interface.

They probably can't do anything about leaving a bookmark if you have a power failure, so for that reason I have a UPS to plug my PVR into.

I've Been Around

PROBLEMS WITH -‐ ROGER’s NEW “NAVIGATR” GUIDE

1. Pushing LIST (greenbutton) – now get numerous Boxes with all the episodes in them
-‐ the old Guide a List of all Recorded programs in Chronological Order was given –
that was

100% preferable.

2. Pushing LIST a second time – now gives nothing ?
-‐ on the old Guide we saw a Chronological List of Scheduled Recordings,

NOW one has to go to each Box to see if it was Scheduled to be recorded ??

-‐ How is that easier and less “clicks” ??

  1. The Program descriptionS are much TOO small to see even when watching a 50” screen from

    about 12 ft away – (I have 20/20 vision) ?

  2. In the “Recorded” Program box – the date only is given – NOT the time or the Channel?

5. When entering a BOX in Navigatr – there were 4 Recorded programs. I deleted 3 of them ... but the whole BOX disappeared ? One should have remained.

6. The “MORE LIKE THIS” suggestions are absolutely LUDRICRUS !!
e.g. – Recorded Program was “Documentary – on Legend of Lead Belly” (a Blues Doc.). The

Movies listed as “Like this” -‐ were – “Mall Cop-‐2” and “American Heist” ... each costing 7 or 8 dollars. How low can you go ???

7. Re On Demand Movies – cannot use INFO button to information. -‐ Cancel – does not work

-‐ Screen freezes – often
-‐ The year of the movie is not given

8. One of the main PROBLEMS with all descriptions of Movies, Series and shows is completely WRONG – notes do not apply to the program.

-‐ often

-‐ Sometimes NO descriptions at all.
-‐ Often NO Year or Actors given in the Movie descriptions
-‐ for Series – why is the Season and the Episode Number never given in the description??

I would expect better from ROGERS ??!!

9. When seeing the red light on the NEXTBOX, then trying to check what is being recorded – Previously a simple push of the LIST button would show you – now you have to search through all of the Boxes and you may get a Red dot ??

10. Re a list of Recorded programs in a “Box”: -‐ have to scroll down to the first recorded program, push Watch – then if you Stop the program it goes back to the newest program?

HOW is the new NAVIGATR better that the previous system ??

Now thinking of checking out BELL so see if theirs is any better!! John Webb ( a long time user of ROGERS – over 25 years) !!

Can't say that I've noticed that with Shomi, but I'm not at home to test right now. Will let you know if I remember to have a look.

Come on now. "American Heist" is presumably about an American heist and the doc you were watching was presumably about the Blues in America. There's your connection! Also, "Mall Cop 2" has an 'L' in the title just like the doc you were watching. Logical when you think about it.  Smiley Frustrated

As logical as this stupid new Navigatr interface anyway.

Hi everyone,

We’d like to thank you for your feedback and patience as we work through some of the changes we’re making to NAVIGATR. We always want to hear from people about what they like and where they think we can do better. For example, some of you let us know that the Guide’s font size needs to be bigger, so we’re working on it and are testing new sizes. We’re also looking at ways to improve the recording guide based on what you’ve told us. And in the meantime, we are doing comprehensive testing to make sure the next NAVIGATR roll out goes smoothly. Once we have more details on timing and next steps we’ll share it here.

Thank you again and we sincerely apologize for any  inconveniences we may have caused.

We HAVE been patient. You say changes are coming. How about an educated guess when? It's been almost a month with daily complaints. The new TV season will be starting soon and as pathetic as this sounds this has completely ruined my tv viewing experience. If it's not "upgraded" soon Bell awaits.

Though this statement is much appreciated, I don't see why it should be down to a forum manager to be making this sort of apology.  Anything less than a real Mea Culpa from Rogers executives, like maybe an open letter of apology to Rogers Cable customers from Ron Perrotta published as a full page ad in the Saturday Star, just doesn't cut it.

That, along with Rogers pro-actively offering reasonable compensation for this to all affected customers, not just the squeeky wheels.  Someone suggested free cable service until such time as they receive an upgraded Navigatr addressing the many issues raised here.  That sounds fair enough, and might light a fire under those working on the fixes to put in a bit of overtime.

Also there's no need to roll ALL the fixes up in one big update, surely you can address the font size/contrast issues REALLY QUICKLY and push that out in the interim, so all those without 20/10 vision can read their screens once again.  Those with poor eyesight have a disability (though in this case even those with normal eyesight are having trouble too).  Not addressing that is equivalent to renovating a store that remains open and removing the wheelchair ramp from service for months until the whole renovation is finished, even though the ramp itself could be repaired in a couple of days.

Re: New Nextbox Navigator

CRTC CASE ID: 716298

Shortly after Navigatr was launched, I contacted the CTRC by email seeking their assistance and referenced this thread.

On August 5 the CRTC forwarded that email to Rogers along with the following commentary.

Thank you for contacting us to express your concerns about your cable service with Rogers.

In light of your concerns and as a courtesy, I am sending a copy of your message to Rogers Cable Communications Inc., and asking the licensee to respond directly to you within 20 calendar days and to provide a copy of their reply to us for review. Should the review by CRTC staff conclude that further regulatory action is required, we will notify you.....

Rogers response received a few minutes ago ( names edited out).

Re: CRTC File 716298

Dear Mr. ................

Thank you for your email, which we received via the CRTC.  We always welcome
customer feedback as it helps us improve your experience with Rogers. You wrote about
Rogers’ recent software upgrade and PVR enhancements to our NextBox cable box
program guide.  In your email you expressed concerns regarding the upgraded guide
(called NAVIGATR) which had been rolled out to some of our customers.

On July 28, Rogers deployed the NAVIGATR upgrade for NextBox cable boxes to
certain regions in Ontario.  Following this, some customers with NextBox 3.0 and
NextBox 2.0 experienced issues with their PVR and/or guide.

As soon as customers called with concerns, we paused our roll-out in order to
investigate. We determined these issues were not related to the design of the software,
but rather to a technical human error at Rogers that occurred during the deployment of
NAVIGATR.

We appreciate your concerns about this and have taken steps to ensure the technical
human error is not repeated as the new guide is rolled-out to our remaining customers in
Ontario.  Also, we do understand that some customers who were affected may have lost
recordings on their PVRs. While some of the shows may be available on Rogers on
Demand, we can’t bring back all the recordings so we have offered affected customers a
credit on their television service.  This credit has been applied to your account. (Edit: after I asked for it)

On behalf of Rogers, thank you again for sharing your views and also for your loyalty to
Rogers.   We always want to hear from our customers about what they like and where
they think we can do better.

Sincerely,

J.......  L...

My HD did not get wiped on July 28 when many NB2s got zapped.

Mine was later on Aug 20/21.  And it is not an NB2, but an NB3.

When I called a machine swap-out was authorized immediately.

Was this a Rogers human error twice?

If it was simple human error why did Rogers insist on swapping-out my purchased NB3?

And why till recently did Rogers give NB2 owners a hard time about swapping their machines?

Looking for some answers, Rogers.

Re: New Nextbox Navigator

@OldElectro

Thanks for your reply - that was to be my final step. But I got it fixed today Smiley Happy

I got an email from Rogers asking me to contact tech support as they "need more information to resolve my issue'. I got a fresh cup of coffee and prepared for the ordeal. I got a very helpful guy who contected "Level 2" support. They came back saying they would send a "Factory Reset" to my box within the hour. IT WORKED!

So although I was told that this had already been done previously, clearly it hadn't. So now at least I can get to the Settings screen and use VOD. Now I will be able to see what the rest of you are complaining about!
