NAVIGATR UPDATE **WIPED MY DRIVE**

theClubHopper
I'm a Reliable Contributor

The new Navigatr PVR software rolled out this morning, in select areas (Newmarket, Oshawa, Ajax, Brampton, Mississauga and Milton). I live in Aurora, and I guess that lumps us in with Newmarket, because my 8642HD's update started around 3:10AM this morning, and completed about 40 minutes later.

I should be happy, right?

Nope! The update WIPED MY DRIVE. It now shows "0% full". And none of my Scheduled Recordings were carried over.

I rebooted.. because you never know, might just be a first-time startup glitch. Nope, they're gone.

In anticipation of the update happening this AM, shortly after midnight, while still on the old Guide software, I took a video with my phone of me scrolling through my Recordings, so I'd know what I was missing (so I could try to find as much of it as I could online, if the need arose). My 500GB drive was 84.8% full, with over 100 recordings. Now it's empty.

I was able to do an online chat with a Rogers tech (@4:45AM) to alert them to the issue, and to implore them to stop the rollout of the software immediately - for everyone's sake. Of course, my complaint was the first they'd heard of it. "The software was tested extensively..." I was told. They always say that though..

4 hrs later, after Navigatr was installed:

Don't know what will happen next, but I will be amazed if they can somehow recover my drive.

Post if the same happened to you.

I'm on a NB2 as well, and the update completely wiped all of my recordings.  Not impressed!

me too i want my stuff
8642 0percent full what are we paying all this money for? contract invalid as far as i can see

Re: NAVIGATR UPDATE **WIPED MY DRIVE**

Hoping to get them back unfortunately i dont think will happen... in all the years on any time the PVR has wiped this way (via an update, just on its own durring a crash, etc) they have never been recoverable... at least by any easy means... IE: yes the data may be technically may be there... but the FAT table per say for the contents, has been re-written.. so it cans see them)

Anyone who thinks they would want compenstation, likely would have to call in and inquire.

I'm Here A Lot

I had (one-off) programs saved for a couple of years, and my wife and I would watch them every so often.  These, I can never get back. I also had regular shows and movies recorded.

All of them were wiped out today, as well as any scheduled recordings.

Seems to affect the Nextbox 2 (8642HD) models only.  I'm ready to call Bell.

Re: NAVIGATR UPDATE **WIPED MY DRIVE**

While i 110 % agree.. that they should have done the testing and that this should NEVER have happened..

You will be hard pressed to find ANY provider, which will ever GAURANTEE any recordings on a PVR.

They are not designed as a permenant storage device.  Primarily designed as a longer term type time shift... allow you to record stuff that you cant watch now.. and watch later.  But not really designed to keep everything forever, like a movie library.

I am still looking for an announcement from Rogers as to what they are going to do. Will they continue with this roll-out or postpone it until the issue has been fixed? Rogers..........................are you listening.......................????

Re: NAVIGATR UPDATE **WIPED MY DRIVE**

There is always a chance that any box can crash and lose everything.  As bad as that would be, it would be natural.  This problem is simply Rogers not doing their homework before uploading the new software.

Gdkitty,

As much as I appreciate your time and the assistance you provide in this (and other) forums (no, I am NOT being sarcastic I really mean it), it is time to stop being a Rogers apologist over this point.  The Navigatr FAQs at:

https://www.rogers.com/web/support/tv/nextbox/9087?setLanguage=en

CLEARLY state:

Will these upcoming changes affect my current TV settings or recordings?

No, your recordings and settings will not be affected.

It's really nothing to do with trying to archive recordings.  If you recorded 3 programs last night or early this morning they'd be gone too before you had a chance to view them.

Nobody has ever asked for a guarantee. We are all well aware of the pitfalls of technology and how it can fail at times. What most of us cannot accept though is the total incompetence of a company that time and time again introduces what they call "enhancements" which leads us to shake our heads in utter amazement! Not because these enhancements are good mind you, but because of how bad they are. There are not only issues with this new guide and how it has wiped out the recordings for many but also the general issue of simply how bad the guide is. It offers no improvements whatsoever - it has only made things more difficult. Trying to put a better spin on this for Rogers makes none of us feel any better - none of us!

Complete garbage!  I can't even get into settings.

Guess I need to look into Bell.  Everything has been wiped from my PVR.  Wishing for the good old days of recording.

I was not trying to put a better spin on it.

Just for the people saying that they will just switch providers.. just saying, that it can happen anywhere and they wont do anything for you either.

But everyone has to do what they beleive is best.  If that means switching, then switch.
Ongoing complaining, doesnt seem to change things.. so someone sticking around HOPING for a change it may not happen.. may be better to leave.

Lovely new Nextbox navigator. But where are the 40+ shows we had saved in the PVR not to mention all the shows that were scheduled record. All our previous PVR settings have been lost. Is there any way to recover the shows and prior settings?
Seriously unimpressed. Fancy new guides don't please me as much as being able to watch the shows I'd saved to watch at a more convenient time.

Look who called me this evening, out of the blue, offering a great deal on services:

We have 0 Bell products, yet when they called the first thing they wanted to do was verify the address they had on file. I asked where they got our info and then asked if there was a reason they were calling today of all days, given that Rogers had just flubbed the rollout of their new PVR software. Coincidence?.. they played dumb, saying they don't monitor what their competitors are doing.

I listened to their very generous offer for 20 minutes and told them to give me a week.

When they called, I was actually in the middle of typing a message on the Rogers "Contact us" form to request a call back tomorrow from whoever is responsible for the Navigatr project (or higher) - not only so I can get some answers to the questions all of us affected users have, but to request that they let me meet with the Navigatr team and provide them some guidance on the numerous usability issues already identified with this Navigatr software. That may sound ridiculous but it's even more ridiculous that a team of professionals can put out such an error-laden and poorly designed interface.

I can assure you the response I get will weigh heavily on our continuation as Rogers customers.

I Plan to Stick Around

I have a NextBox 3.0.

My existing recordings seem to have been retained, however a whole bunch of my scheduled recordings have vanished.

But that's not where it ends...This update is TERRIBLE!

- Ability to view separate lists of saved and scheduled shows: GONE

- Ability to view lists of saved recordings clearly ordered by date recorded: GONE

- Ability to see what's currently recording: GONE

The new list view is useless. Titles are truncated. Saved and scheduled episodes are counted together. What good is it to tell me there's 2 episodes when neither has been recorded yet?

Oh but wait, there's now 8 million ways to format closed captions. Guess that makes up for it.

Thanks for another win Rogers.

All my programs on my Nextbox 2 were  wiped as well. I think Rogers should provide some renumeration to makeup for this disaster some programs cannot be recovered and they are not available through Shomi or other On demand/streaming  sites.

Rogers has rolled out a new enhanced TV guide overnight and ruined all my PVR recordings and scheduling.  I woke up this morning to find a new guide I did not ask for (and not an improvement over the old one in my opinion) and disaster: all my recordings are gone.  All schedules for future recordings also wiped out.

Any idea if these are recoverable?  if so, how?

Yep, my PVR has been wiped clean.  So angry.

Can't believe Rogers is so careless about rolling out software.  Haven't they heard of testing before thrusting this inferior product down our throats?  I did not ask for an upgrade.  Was not warned that it will destroy all my recordings and future schedules.

Time to switch to Bell?

We are all waiting to hear. I personally see no reason for optimism.

I have never seen it mentioned, nor did the Rogers tech I chatted with last night ever say "No need to panic, the recordings are kept on a different partition to the Guide software".  For all I know that may be true, but if it were I would think given the fact that some people have been having their PVR's drive wiped after a major guide update since at least 2011, it would be common knowledge.

As I was up last night anticipating the update, I noted what was happening on my PVR's display and on-screen.

I don't know if it will help Rogers Techs see what went wrong, but here's my log:

  1. 3:10AM: live tv interrupted - Downloading updates (brief)
  2. TV live playback resumed
  3. 3:20AM, Downloading...
front panel: alphanumeric countdown in format "r9DF", "r9DE", "r9DD" etc (5 mins to complete)
    "Pr0c"
    "d0ne"
    "boot"
on-screen msg about software upgrade (brief, on old 8300 type background), then black(nothing)
front panel: "r9DF" countdown again (3-4 minutes to complete)
    "Pr0c"
    "d0ne"
"-" (flashing, for a few seconds)
"-00-" for a few seconds, followed by "–01-"
on-screen: blank blue(violet?) screen, while front panel still on "-01-"
front panel: after pause of 30secs "–03-", then fairly quickly "–04-" & "–05-" (long delay on "-5-".. approx 7 mins)
    front panel: "LoAd"
on-scren: black, blank - for about 1 minute
front panel: clock (actual time) appears
on-screen: loading circle w %age & progress bar in LR corner (3 minutes to complete)
  4. PVR power is off, I waited a minute and with no sign of any further update activity, pressed Power on remote
    time: 3:46AM
screen shows "WELCOME TO YOUR NEW TV GUIDE" Navigatr first-run screen

Re: NAVIGATR UPDATE **WIPED MY DRIVE**

Although it is a tremendous inconvenience, the wiped drive on the 8642 pvr is not unrecoverable. All that is needed is for the data to be recovered and then restored to it. From what I've read, it may be that Rogers may do this for you if asked nicely. hmmmm, maybe that asking to much of us. hehe
