Lag spikes in Games/ how do i know which ultimate i have?

Redemption
I Plan to Stick Around

I'm getting a ton of lag spikes in almost all of the games i play.   Especially in League of Legends and Diablo 3.   Everything seems to be fine for a bit then the games just spike to really high numbered pings and eventally back down again.    This is my pathping for diablo 3.    I cant seem to find the NA server ip for league so i cant pathping/trace that.

Also I have no clue what ultimate i have.    Apparently it says i have "250 gb ultimate" on my account.    I never get past 2 upload speed though and my speed varies from 80-150 meg download.   And the only old plan i recalled was 150/10?   this is my speed test results http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3471491010 The website says i don't have access to the new plans even though there way cheaper and provide more gigs and speed.    So am i apparently just screwed(with major lag spikes in games)  and cant even upgrade to a better plan if i wanted?   I'm currently using the Cisco DPC3825 DOCSIS 3.0 Gateway.     Please help me fix these issues in league/diablo 3.   Things i have already tried.

-No wireless connections at all.  I am using pure Wired connections.

- No Torrents what so ever

-No background activities

-I port forwarded

- No virsues

- the lag spike seems to soften alot at night time as in they are not as frequent say around 5 or 6 pm.

thanks for your time.     I hope i can get this thing finnaly resolved its driving me nuts.

For your GAMING issues.. i was talking with someone about some stuff yesterday (she plays blizz games, etc) and says some of the peering for the routes have changed, something with AT&T.
Which is what looks like what has happened on your trace there.. at 12 when it hops onto the AT&T network.
HOPEFULLY this gets resolved soon.

For your other issue.. Yes, the plan you are on, is the old 150/10 package, was called ultimate, and has 250g usage.

The website i think it a little screwed up.. if your on the 150, you should be able to get on the 150 again... its been showing not available for a bunch of people.  You likely would have to call in.

You should have no issues going to the NEW 150 plan.   The 250 plan, is still only available in select areas, until they do infrastructure upgrades in all areas, it wont be available in all.

Not sure on the upload issue... which modem do you currently have?

I could be wrong, but I thought the 'new' 150 required the CGN3 and a neighbourhood capable of supporting the 'old' 250 plan? (As opposed to the 'old' 150, which required an 8-channel modem)

(i.e. they don't want to offer the new 150, along with its faster upload speeds and lower price, in neighbourhoods that don't have whatever the magic number of D3 channels to offer the old 250 is. Which makes sense, because the new pricing means there will be a LOT of takers for the new 150, and the capacity needs to be there...)

Re: Lag spikes in Games/ how do i know which ultimate i have?

While yes, i think the NEW 150 requires the CGN3 (vs you could use the CGN2 and even the cisco sometimes for the old one)...
not sure on the network part.. i dont think the channel part is really what effects the 250 availablility.

I am in an area, which STILL doesnt even get the 150.. let alone the 250. (bout an hour north or tornoto)

But with the CGN3, even on the 30/5 plan... the CGN3 uses 20 channels, so its quite capable of the more usage of channels here.. but not the higher speeds.

Okay, that's puzzling. Time for a new theory!

I can't check mine (since it's in bridge mode), but how many UPSTREAM channels does your CGN3 use? Maybe some areas only have 1 channel deployed, others have 3-4, and that's what dictates availability for the upper tiers?

Or... is the CGN3 like the CGN2? The CGN2's upstream light is a different colour if only one channel is used, which would make it very easy to identify.

Re: Lag spikes in Games/ how do i know which ultimate i have?

Or, now that I think of it, maybe there's a stupider explanation.

i.e. the 20 channel setup was recently deployed in your area, and they just haven't updated the database of where the higher-speed tiers are available yet...

Re: Lag spikes in Games/ how do i know which ultimate i have?

That is possible.. havent called in to ask that way.. as well i dont need those tiers 😛

I have 20down, 3 up bonded right now.

Right I'm kind of a noob.   I actually have no idea what modem i have.  is a modem/router kinda the same thing?  all i know is i am using Cisco DPC3825 DOCSIS 3.0 Gateway.   And ya probably the blizzard thing about the atat thing will be fixed but what about other games.    I still have no clue whats wrong with league of legends.  I tried there support  but they haven't got back to me in a while.   Like everyything is fine for like 10 minutes then 3-4 seconds my ping spikes to high 200-300 and  i cant do anything in that frame.  sucks playin like that lol.  never know when its gonna happen.

another thing on the package and plans website for rogers.   everything says "ways to buy now" instead of "check availability"  does that mean those packages are now avaiable in my area?   i would upgrade to the 250/20 one as im virtually paying the same thing for 150/10 now lol.

Re: Lag spikes in Games/ how do i know which ultimate i have?

Yeah, go to to the new plans, you would have to switch to the CGN3

(but there are benifits, etc as stated, with the extra channels, etc)

LOL could be effected by the same routing changes.

If going to the LoL server, passes through the same servers, could be effectd the same way.

right and if i switch to this new plan will the lag spikes stop or is it a routing issue somewhere else.    would you recommend getting the 250/20 plan(thats how much im paying right now for my 150/10(although i never get 10, just 150/2)  maybe the new CGN3 will not have these lag spikes?

At the end of the day, who cares?

The new plans, on the high end, give you better service for less money. So unless you're really allergic to the CGN3, it seems to me that switching to them is a good idea, whether or not it fixes this issue. The new 150/10 will be about $40 less than what you have now, no?

(That being said, I suspect your lag spikes are caused by something other than the modem. But that's another issue...)

Re: Lag spikes in Games/ how do i know which ultimate i have?

As VivienM said.. switching to the new plans, just for a COST standpoint, is a good idea overall.

either just the 150 or up to the 250.

But for your issue.. its 98% likely its not your end which is doing it.. and is not the OTHER end as well.

Its a point inbtween, that they need to fix whatevers broken.  (which is neither in rogers or the other ends control)

Tommorow I am gonna give rogers a call and see if 250/20 is in my area.   I should upgrade my Cisco DPC3825 DOCSIS 3.0 Gateway to something else right.  Which router is the best for 250/20 plan or the 150/15 plan.     We don't use wireless at all so im wondering if the CGN3 is good for just wired connection.   Right now i am getting about 80-150 on speedtests with 2 upload and paying about $100-105  (old deal with rogers..)  if i go 250/20 upgrade  i think it would come out to $113.  and the150/15 would come to about $98.

The only option is the CGN3. 🙂

So it's very simple.

Re: Lag spikes in Games/ how do i know which ultimate i have?

VivienM is correct, the CGN3 is the ONLY option.

The wired on the CGN3, is just FINE.
Well.. mostly.
Will all depend on the device.   There is a problem with SOME 10/100 devices, not linking properly on the CGN3.  Anything gigabit should be just fine.

I currenly have a 5 port gig switch into it, an 8 port gig switch, and a gigabit wan ASUS router, without issues.

Been having BAD lag, especially at night too on games.  I play WoW ( Blizzard ) with a server in Chicago, and my latency has bumped form 30s to 120s.  Been hearing about problems with the AT&T servers too.

Rogers, any way to bypass that AT&T garbage???

Yeah, if you are on the chicago blizz datacenter.. your likely going to run into these issues.

Can Rogers do something? Maybe.

It would require PATHING changes.. could those be done? Possibly..

It would depend on what other peering partners they have in the area, etc...

With chicago being not THAT far away from Ontario... there likely isnt that many paths to choose from.

Blizz has been collecting alot of data the last few days from people... Really, it something that AT&T has to fix and blizz is working with them.
Blizzards datacenters are all on AT&T backbones.. so in the end, has to go through AT&T one way or the other at least at the end.

Same issue. Anybody play bf4 on PC?

My pings have been going up and down for the past week and have made multiplayer gaming unplayable with all the stuttering.

According to rogers the internet is working perfectly.

Anyone know what this could be?
