Lack of Windows flagship is frustrating

As a Lumia 920 owner I've been quite frustrated over the lack of flagship devices available at Rogers for Windows phones.

I want to know a few things... Any insight is appreciated!

1- Why no Lumia 930, Lumia 1520, or HTC ONE M8? Is it because the Lumia 920 didn't do well in sales? Waiting for windows 10 release and possible new devices?

2- Since we didn't get any other windows flagship phone past the Lumia 1020, what are the odds that we will get any possible flagship phones when Windows 10 is released? are we going to be stuch with budget flaghsip devices and having to buy devices unlocked online?

To be honest I found ROGERS support for windows devices to be a joke. I know Windows isn't as popular as Android or iOS, but maybe if there was more advertising, less ignorant customer service reps, or reps that only push the OS they use, and a little more support for the device and its accessories there would be more windows customers.

It is a dumb first world problem, but I'm frustrated because there are options out there that aren't available to us and I want to know why.

Re: Lack of Windows flagship is frustrating

I was a Rogers' Customer for several years now and was so happy when they offered the 920 back in 2012. Unfortunately, I got a buggy phone and I had to fight to get it replaced. I even got offered an Android phone instead of a Windows Phone replacement.

Fast forward last month. I realized Rogers does not care about Windows Phone. It does not want to promote it. No 925, no 1520, no 2520, no word on the 930. So I decided to buy a 1520 (RM-938) from OmegaCell, leave Rogers and go with a less expensive provider. It has been a month now and I love the phone. It has an awesome screen, a great battery life, the camera's fantastic (got the chance to try it at the Dave Matthews Band show this week).

brandonjbarnard I'm with you on wanting to see an upgrade soon, although my plan extends to August so I can wait until then.   In a worst case scenario I would upgrade down one level to the 835 ( 8 something) as it seems like a very excellent phone at the right price.

From reading blogs and posts and this and that, I'm getting the impression that Microsoft is trying to avoid the Apple mistake.  Apple has increased sales each year but decreased worldwide market share at the same time.  Android and to a much lesser extent Windows, has increased market share.   The reason Android has done so well is that they are dirt cheap!   Apple can't complete with that. At least not in the third world where the big market is.    Microsoft has introduced increasingly low priced models such as the 5 and 6 series and now even the 4 series.  This is to get them into the huge India, Asia an Latin American markets.

I've also heard that there will be a new flagship but likely it will come with Windows 10.  I'm sure it will be impressive when it gets here.

I hear your frustration over service providers being totally ignorant about Microsoft.   I'm not going to praise or berate Rogers, but I can tell you that the response that we received when searching for an upgrade for my son at his service provider, which is not Rogers, was really insulting.   The sales guy basically said "why do you want a Windows product?" in an manner that sounded like "what's your problem that you want a Windows Phone".   My response was "because we are smarter than you" and then we left.

I'm no longer worried about what they say or know.   If the phone I like is out there but not at one of the big three service providers, I will order it from B & H Photography which is a huge and well trusted shop in New York that does extensive mail order of photogragraphy and some other electronics such as cell phones.  It was totally hassel free and we get the phone we wanted and can pick any service provider because it's unlocked.    The current exchange rate does hurt a bit though.

So we are all waiting for the new flagship and I have no doubt it will come out, but as for when, next week, next month, the summer, I don't know.

Re: Lack of Windows flagship is frustrating

Hey!

I totally understand why Microsoft have shifted to emerging markets with more budget friendly phones, and I understand why they are waiting for Windows 10 before releasing any more hardware.

My frustration is just the fact that we were never offered the L930 or even the HTC ONE M8. I am just hoping that when devices for Windows 10 are released that Rogers will offer them. Hoping as well that my Lumia 920 lasts until the new windows phones are made available.

Thats the problem as well a lot of the carriers are ignorant or unwilling to try something new. Which is their problem, but makes it harder to introduce potential customers to the device.

Hahaha thats the best response ever to a service provider! I may have to steal it! 🙂

I too was looking at buying a Lumia 1520 from B&H photography! Was also looking at www.expansys.ca but they ran out of stock. However I can't afford the $600 or so for a phone right now so decided to stick with my L920 as it is still working quite well for being over 2 years old!

Thanks for your reply!

Hey brandonjbarnard!

We’re always looking to bring the latest and greatest devices to our customers. At the moment, as I'm sure you're aware, we offer the Nokia Lumia 830 and Lumia 635.  We do appreciate your feedback and I have sent it along internally to the appropriate team.

Re: Lack of Windows flagship is frustrating

I switched from TELUS back to ROGERS to get the Lumia 920! I still have it and its still going strong after 2 years.

I agree with you though that Rogers does not seem to care about Windows Phone platform. Hardly any advertising and any customer service representative in a Rogers store will always push either Android or Apple.

The Lumia 830 is a great phone, but not what I'm looking for.

I too was going to buy a 1520 phone off of Omega Cell or Expansys.ca but can't justify $600 right now, especially when there are rumours of a Windows 10 phone coming in the summer.

Have fun at your concert!

Re: Lack of Windows flagship is frustrating

Thank you for responding!

However the latest and greatest windows phones are not the Lumia 830 or the L635. I've seen performance videos of the Lumia 920 compared to the Lumia 830 and in it the Lumia 920 peformed the same and in some instances better than the Lumia 830. If Rogers was looking to bring in the "latest and greatest" devices to customers they would've offered at least the Lumia 930 or HTC ONE M8. I'm not going to use my upgrade and sidegrade to a model that peforms like the phone I have now. I wouldve signed another 2 year contract if one of those phones was offered. I truly hope ROGERS offers the new windows 10 flagship phone when it is released or I'm going to buy it out right and switch to a cheaper carrier.

Re: Lack of Windows flagship is frustrating

I would just go the unlocked route and order one online.

I finally ordered a 1520 last night from these guys.

Both Rogers and Microsoft Canada have not a clue. Microsoft should at least offer unlocked high-end devices at their stores for people who want those devices.

Re: Lack of Windows flagship is frustrating

I was considering that route, however I just can't justify the $500-$600 outright for a new phone at the moment. Especially since MWC is only a month away. If I have to go the unlocked route I'd rather spend my money on a new flagship.
You are absolutely right though, Rogers and Microsoft Canada are doing a poor job offering the devices and accessories in this country. I can understand a bit why Rogers wouldn't offer those devices, but why wouldn't Microsoft Canada not make any of those devices available unlocked for sale on their site? Its frustrating.

Re: Lack of Windows flagship is frustrating

I don't think there will be any flagship devices until Windows 10 is launched. That's going to be way in the fall. I just can't wait any longer because my 920 has gotten boring.

BTW I got my 1520 today. It's Awsome. Everythign works like a charm, including LTE.
