Iphone Data Usage Issue

michelley27
I've Been Around

Hey everyone,

This morning I received a text message from Rogers saying I have reached 100% of my data usage allowance.  I have a 500mb plan.  I chose this plan because I cannot afford anything more than that (nor that I want to pay more than that) AND because I know I am always around a Wifi hotspot so it would be dumb to pay for more data when I use wifi the majority of the time.

NOW, since I have a 500mb plan, today it says as of about 10 minutes ago that I am at 532.50mb.  I have a problem with this because since I have been with Rogers for the last year, I have never even come close to reaching my limit (because I use wifi A LOT). The only time I use 3G is when I am on break at work, which definitely WOULD NOT max out my usage.

I called Rogers, and the lady on the phone said she could not do anything because my billing cycle had just started on the 18th of February and she could not see anything on my account until my next bill came through. I find this hard to believe, because why I am receiving text messages when my billing cycle has just restarted??

Anyways, she said she would do a call back March 4th because then my bill will have shown up and she can see my account. After I got off the phone with her, I have turned off my cellular data to avoid having more charges.

Does anyone know why this is happening? I usually don't even come close to using half of my data usage because I use wifi so much. What also puzzles me is that is had maxed out 3ish days after my billing cycle has restarted...

Is there anything I can do in the meantime? Restore my phone, etc etc..??

I REFUSE to pay any overage charges as this is clearly something that I havnet done, and is their problem. I came to Rogers a year ago from Telus because Telus was charging me for things I didnt use on my phone and I did file a claim with the CCTS and Telus had to pay my cancellation charges. So far I have been really happy with Rogers, and this is the first time I have had a problem and received a notification text about going over my data limit. I would hate to have to file another claim with the CCTS as I do not have tolerance for these large corporations and the random charges they give out and their fees.

I have an Iphone 3GS if that makes a difference. and ALSO this incident happens to coincide wtih my credit limit being removed... could their be a link??

Sorry for blabbing! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Michelle

Same issue...

I have a 500 mb plan, and now it says I'm over it 48mb..

I've called customer support and technical support.

The technical support guy said that just before my call he had discussed this same issue with another customer, and had advised both of us that the text we got (mine saying I reached 80% etc) was 'junk mail' and if I do get charged over to call back to get refunded...

It's frustrating that no one can tell me what the cause of this is..

I've been referred to Rogers stores, Support centre online (which I cant get through because they're something wrong with their connection) where I would be able to chat 'live' with a person, and Blackberry support.

It's $0.03 per MB overage, but this overage seems like a glitch to me as I never use that much data...

Someone help..

Hi michelley27 and welcome to the forums!

This sounds more like an error on our end or that the data used did not reset starting the new billing cycle. Keep in mind there are many instances where you may have some 3rd party push apps that continually update information (which would use data).

500 megs in 3 days sounds a little excessive unless you were constantly streaming on 3G or tethering. I recommend speaking with our customer service at 1866-931-3282 so they can look into this and get it resolved.

Hi

This just happened to me as well. In 4 days i apparently used 500MB. When I hit 80% of Maximum,  I called Rogers Tech Support. I then apparently used 100MB today to get a single movie title via Poynt.  My turnover date is Mar 2nd. I have been on the phone with Rogers Tech Support and Customer Service to no avail. The Cellular Data is now turned off. I'm curious to see how much the data plan will show tomorrow and the rest of the month. I plan on calling them daily. I have had the iphone since Jan 2010 and never exceeded my limit. Something is screwy somewhere. Apparently i used 38 mb while i was asleep with wireless available at home. I am going to try Tech Support again tomorrow for detailed billing info.

My husband has currently had the same thing happen to him.  It said he was close to his maximum so he turned off everything in his phone.  He even went on line and looked up ways to minimize usage and did everything he read.  While his phone was off and he was at work, he went over his data.  When he talked to a Rogers customer service rep, she immediately erased all charges and gave him unlimited usage so he could find out where this excessive usage is coming from and to determine what he uses on a regular basis.  He has had his phone for quite a long time and never had been close to using his 500 mb.  I think it is a glitch with Rogers, but in our experience, Rogers has been very helpful in dealing with this error.  Try calling them again.  I hope this helps.

This exact same thing is happening with my blackberry right now.  I have not downloaded any new apps and am using my phone as usual.  According to Rogers I've used 300mb of data in the last 48 hours.  209 of those mb showed up 24 hours after I'd turned my off completely.  Customer Service told me they can't do anything until the billing cycle is over.  BB tech support told me that everything lokos normal on thier end.  I refuse to pay any overage charges - I've never in my 3 years with a blackberry ever used more than 200mb in a month.  What the **** is going on with this network?

Sorry...

I am experiencing the same issue, recieved a txt mesage stating I am at 100 % of my 500mb 6days into the cycle. Checked using the MyAccount app and it states I am over by 113 mb, total of 613mb. Called rogers twice, reps could not help, same response, can not help until your billing cycle is over. So 6 days into the cycle I am at 613mb, I turn off the cellular data network, turn off 3G. Reset my data statistics on my phone, installed DataMan App(using wireless home network) to monitor data usage. Turn the phone off overnight. Check MyAccount again today and another 8mb of data. WTF!  Dataman app shows 0mb usage on  cellular????

I am only using wireless at home now. I am at a loss here.???? Will continue to monitor the data usage over the weekend and call Rogers. May have to take out a complaint with CCTS. and as I understand it they will then send the complaint to the OOP(Office of the President).

I am really ticked! I came to rogers from Bell to bundle my services, looks like I should have bundled the other way.

I thought other people would have a similar issue but I had no idea I had it the worst.

On May 2 at 6:00 in the morning I received a text message saying that I had reached 100% of my data. I though that was odd as I was only a few days into a new billing cycle.

Once I checked it online it showed that on April 30 I had used 14GB early in the morning. I called Rogers and they said there is nothing they can do until the bill is processed. I though this was ok, once the bill is processed they can see exactly how the data was used and how ridiculous it is that someone who uses around 300 MB a month would suddenly use 14 GB in one day.

Now, it's a week since I called after my bill was processed. They are currently "investigating" the usage but the notes indicate that they believe it's legitimate. I'm stuck here with over $500 sitting on my credit card from my Rogers Bill and it doesn't look like they will be doing anything about it.

I have received the same message. Called tech support, data usage occurring at 4:30 am. Rogers no help, they speculate it could be apps updating ... 9mb at a time ..sure. just added Dataman app to see what it tracks.

Re: Iphone Data Usage Issue

well ive got the same thing, kinda. Got the text, thought it was weird as ive never gone over my limit (1gb) usually i end up around 700 MB

i checked the my rogers app, shows im at 530(500 and something idk the exact) so i checked online in the myrogers, same thing.

im a new rogers customer, if they keep this up im going to switch to MTS. not happy at all.

Re: Iphone Data Usage Issue

also ill add in that i do have a 3rd party Data management app that tracks all my data, wifi, 3G, edge, upload/download, and its on par with what the myRogers says.

if that helps. Ive had to turn off my data as i dont wanna be charged extra

Same Issues!

Billing cycle started from me on July 3rd and as of now I have apparently used 80% of my 1GB. It makes no sense! I am on WIFI at work and at home with strong connections. I am going away next week and know I will need my data. I don't want to go over and don't want to pay. This is royally messed up.

Called Rogers and they said it could be apps running, but when I checked, all the apps that were 'open' were my camera and setttings and e-mail and other apps that don't even use data. I don't get that much e-mail for it to be using nearly 1 GB of data in 13 days. WTF is going on?

I have seen so many threads of people with the EXACT same issue.

They said I could wait till my bill comes out, but i don't want to risk going over my limit, and not getting extra charges taken off.

If anyone from Rogers reads this... please figure out a **bleep** way to help us BEFORE our billing cycle ends. This is ridiculous and I'm really regretting my decision to stay with Rogers. What the **bleep** was I thinking?

I had the same issues with what everyone is having. The last 2 years I was using the Iphone 3G and later upgraded to the Iphone4. With the 3G it seemed as though I was constantly going over my 1G of data, I talked with customer Relations - Service and finally routed to Tech support. ALL told me it was becuase the 3G phone had apps running. Well, I gave every Rep a piece of my mind and said it was not apps running. Even the Tech Reps couldn't understand. Both Techs seperately admitted that I schooled them with the knowledge I have with the Iphone...I Didn't get no where. I did an experiment with my old Iphone 3G. Left it OFF completely for 2 days. It acrued data.
Customer relations allowed me an upgrade and opted for a new phone.
Solution I made was the Iphone4...I hope its not the same Madness!

Hi RogersJean,

The very same thing happened to me this morning as well.  Got a wake up message telling me I was over my 500mb data plan by 39.6mb, yet it is ONLY now that I should be on my 2nd day after my billing reset of the 18th.  I looked at the Rogers app and it also says I have sent over 1100 text messages.

Reading all the forums out there it looks like it's been happening to people and yet no one is posting any answers.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.   I have heard all these nightmare stores that hit the media about $$$ charges and it scares me that it could happen to me through a glitch.  Thanks in advance!

I've Been Here Awhile

JUUUST got through to Rogers, spoke with Katherine/Catherine and advised me the Rogers web network was delayed in updating their site and are just behind by a day or two.  She was pretty confident that it was likely be because of this, but cannot 100% guarantee that it was the reason.

She documented my account to state that I called and that was that.  So for the peeps out there stressing, it could be that the billing cycle didn't reset due to a network update.  Check and see if your messaging is off as well (ie. you've sent 1000 txt msgs in a day) cuz THAT would likely be a sign. Doesn't mean don't follow up, give Rogers a call to document your inquiry and concern.

Also don't instantly go nuts on the Rep, they're probably getting stressed out from all the calls they're receiving.  You could absolutely make or break someones day with even a bad undertone.  You attract more flies with honey than with vinegar (although I don't know why anyone would want to attract flies).  If it's a system issue then they'll probably fix it.

Patience young grasshopper.

Had the same problem this week.  Got a text message on Tuesday @ 9:30am telling me that I'd reached 100% of my data plan allowance.  On Thursday @ 9:30am, another text messge telling me that I $50 in data usage over the 500 mb plan.  Now get this....  TWO hours later, another text msg. telling me that I had now reached $100 over the plan!

I went through the phone crap that everyone else has experienced, and was told to wait until the next bill comes out before they can take another look at my 'issue'.  In the meantime, I've turned OFF "Cellular Data" and the iPhone is basically useless except for phoning

I've been with Rogers for over 3 years and have NEVER even come CLOSE to maxing out my data plan.  I'm glad I'm not the only one that's had this experience, even though they try to make me feel that way.

The last time I received a text that rogers sent me told me that I reached 80% of my data plan allowance, which is 1GB, then I tried to use it less, then that month I pay no more than a dollar for exceeding limit of data. I knew that I over the limit again this month because I received a massage on the morning of Oct 28th said I reached 100% of my data plan allowance, then I turn cellular data and 3g off, And right before I reply you, I checked how much data I exceeded, it is freaking 257MB. I am pretty mad right now because about one week before I received the text from Rogers this month, I checked my data usage; I only used 300MB something, and 2/3 of the month passed. So I did not concern at all, then it reached 100% so fast!!! And last time I got a warning for reaching 80% first, and I was waiting about that mail, boom, I already exceeded, what the **bleep**?

I received my new iphone 4S on October 17th. My Billing cycle ends on the 20th. So I am on a new second billing cycle with my iphone. I have not moved my sim around to another device so that could not be the issue.

My account states I've used 1.4 Gigs (1433.6 mb) in the current billing cycle so far (From October 21st, 2011 to present). However my iphone statistics say I've only used 1092 mb (148 sent, 944 received) total for the lifespan of my phone(from the 17th til now) The numbers have never been reset, and these 1092 mb also are included in the few days before the current cycle started. I've been bounced around several times (3 times to technical support, along with a few other departments) and no one knows where to point me in the right direction as to find out where the problem is and to get the data correctly charged.
