I've been getting this alert all evening--without the ear-splitting noise this time. The problem is, the infant was found before I even turned my tv on.

The red bar is at the top of the screen and cuts the top off actors' heads most of the time.

And . . . my ears are still ringing from March 6th.

Re: How Do I Turn Off Emergency Alerts On Navigatr?

Online news sources state the missing child was found around 7:30pm - over an hour later, the red bar and text is still on the TV screen. Doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the alert system, plus now it's a distraction for no reason.

CTV news reported at 5:27 p.m. that the baby was found. In addition, they state the abductor is 40-45 years old, whereas the alert on my tv states he is 20-25 years old.

Can we believe what we see on our TVs when we get a red alert, or will it be distorted information that sends us on a wild goose chase?

I started watching recorded shows around 7:30 p.m. here in the Woodstock area and there was no alert, so maybe it was only on live TV, unlike the original Red Alert that started this thread. Perhaps there are different criteria for Red and Amber Alerts.

Yes I basically turned off my cable, and put on a streaming service. Its been a couple of hours and its still on. Its frustrating. I have the old menu still so that might have something to do with why it goes right across the front of the screen. No exit to click. This is actually enough that I would cancel my subscription with Rogers if it occurs often enough without an exit button and yes all channels.

I don't understand how this could be allowed. To implement the amber alert in such a manner and cause me to seriously consider canceling my cable and just getting an hd antenna and use online streaming is incredibly stupid. I don't understand why Rogers wouldn't have been more involved in how this played out.

9:20 and I have red bar going across Ben Hur's head. For how much a month? This better change as I don't want to spend another Sunday night dealing with this bull.

Re: How Do I Turn Off Emergency Alerts On Navigatr?

Reading news and just saw ion the news, baby from the stolen car was found half an hour ago and that's GREAT NEWS!!!

On my Netbox 2.0 the amber alert is displayed in a wider biger red box with an exit button on the bottom so you close it once you read the message.

On Explorer 4250HD totaly different story. Annoying amber alert is still there for the last 4-5 hours, sitting in the top half of the screen, still rotating police note in one single red line, and no options how to exit and remove from the screen. Pressing exit button on the remote does nothing. Rebooting the box is also without success. It seems Rogers no longer cares to fix the menu or update navigator for older digital boxes.

Q: Rogers Support folks -> How do you turn off amber alert on Explorer 4250HD digital box?

Thank you

Re: How Do I Turn Off Emergency Alerts On Navigatr?

Baby found...no thanks to me, I was in my basement watching TV.  Also, besides not being outside monitoring any passing cars, I live 450 km away from the place where it happened.  I presume that the culprit could have made it here by now, since other drivers who might have spotted the culprit are driving on the highway and not watching TV.  If only my TV were closer to the highway...

The alert is still on my TV, of course.  Rogers support has a recorded message that tells me that if I get a NextBox, then I can dismiss the message.  That's offensive.  Someone sends a message by mistake and I have to upgrade my box just to dismiss the message?  My "next" box will be for my replacement service.  However, if you're not dumping Rogers, an upgrade will fix the problem apparently.

Strange.... I only saw the alert (using DTA-50) intermittently for about half an hour during the 6pm news.  Once with the sound alert that lasted about 30 seconds.   When I started watching TV at 8:30pm (using 8642 HDPVR box) there was no alert showing for the rest of the evening.

In any case I'm glad the baby was found safe and according to the news it was the amber alert that helped find him so quickly.

Just a note,  You may not be out and about when an alert is issued but if a child is still missing a day or two later the information given on the alert could still play a part in finding him or her.

I am of the mind, that i dont have an issue with the alterts PER SAY... but the system does need some tweeking.

A) Location - I am OK with even just amber alerts like this being broadcast.. but have to be for just a specific reasonable area.  200-250km or something from where it happened..  no point for a problem in london on, to be broadcast in ottawa.

B) Speed.. the message scrolls way too slow.

But overall.. the experience will vary based on your provider and your hardware.  All in all, i would guess generally its a HARDWARE limitation in the programming, etc possibly (in terms of ability of overlays, etc).

Rogers:
NB2 and 3 - Have it as a dismissable overaly

Older SARA boxes - an overaly, but is not dismissable
DTA - an overlay which is not dismissable

Bell:
Fibe - a dismissable overlay.
Satalite - Actually CHANGES the channel to a warning channel, regardless of what you were doing.

OTA:
On any CANADIAN channel.. it will be on the channel itself on the broadcast.. no way at all of removing it 😞

Thanks for posting because I turned the TV on after 7:30 and saw no alert. A wouldn't know whether dismissing the alert could or could not be implemented on boxes other than the Nextbox, but I suspect the will and budget isn't there to do so. But certainly the system needs to be tweaked to end the alerts soon after the emergency is over.

I just watched a recorded program that had the emergency alert recorded and played back loud. I'm using a Cisco 9865HD PVR.

It appears that none of the channels and providers are on the same page regarding these alarms. My only encounter was the one from Orillia a few weeks ago  and it was live on the cable network while watching a recording in progress, not on the recording.

With all the terrorism happening around the world and even on this continent,  I hope they get it straightened out so we're not routinely dismissing Amber Alerts masquerading as Red Alerts.

This Emergency Alert thing is annoying. I don't need to be lectured about how this would be important if there was a storm coming to my hood.  I am going to lodge a complaint with the CRTC. This is a terrible implementation of this 'feature'. The loud beeping shouldn't be so loud. And there should be an option to stop the current message and ignore further alerts about this alert. And as important as Amber Alerts are, they should not interrupt my viewing.

Ontop of what the providers (rogers, bell, etc) will do  via the allerts, etc...

It appears that a few channels do it as well.

I think CTV was one of them.. the channel itself broadcasts an alert as well... no way of clearing, etc...

Since its on the feed.. it would be on any recordings as well 😞

I'm Here A Lot

I did the same as last time I got an amber alert. I reached for the ON/OFF power button on my remote to stop the audio screech from the alert.

Result: Never saw or read the amber alert details.

Until they get rid of the audio in the alerts and until I get CHOICE of turning on/off the service as an option...I will simply shut off the TV when it happens.

While I agree with the idea of the alert system, stupidity is its implementation means I and likely many others will ignore it.

Odd, on my cellphone where I have the option turned on and I believe usefull as I am moblie and not sitting in my house...I didn't get the alert.

I just pressed exit as per the notice on the TV screen.

This is the 2nd time it has happened. I can't change the channels when they are up. And pushing exit is a lost cause. I mean I live in King City and the storm they had the alert for was in Beaverton-north of Newmarket??  We did get a storm go through here but all we got was two or three flashes of lightning. lots of rain and some wind. It was all finished with around 2:15 and yet the stupid emergency alert was still going. They FINALLY decided to take it off at 3:08. YAY!!

@KarenGF:

What is the exact model number of your box?  This thread is about Navigatr, which is the firmware utilized on 4642, 8642, 9865 boxes. With this firmware, you should be able to hit exit and get rid of the alert.  (See post 93 of this thread)

Due to the limitations of the older boxes that run the SARA firmware, the alert cannot be dismissed using exit and I assume you wait for the end of the alert, perhaps turning off your TV in the meantime, or muting it if the alert has sound associated with it.

The alerts are different due to the limitations of the boxes issued by the various providers.

The alerts can also appear to be from "outside" the affected area. This happens due to the limitations of the various head ends that feed Rogers customers.   It's even worse for Satellite customers (and some other customers who get their provider's feeds via satellite)  who may see alerts that are hundreds or thousands of miles away.

People who get their signals OTA (over the air, via antenna) can obviously get alerts that may be from outside the country - say Buffalo or Rochester, etc.

I've Been Around

My complaint is not about the warning. Even though the warning here was cancelled an hour ago I still see the bar. My complaint is that I have no sound on my TV and I cannot get it back. I turn it on and off again and it works for about 30 seconds, then it is back. I tried rebooting the box and still it came back.

I can relate to that, but an amber alert from outlying province, immediately

is a little overkill!

I have automatically exitted now since seeing redundacy for it and now you can appreciate that the alert goes unseen and unaware of what the alarm is for!

There is a point as to what the gov't dictates and disregards to privacy, but

we shouldn't be mandated before discussion!

Beyond surrounding and immediate areas is a little much!

A few days ago, there was a test of the system during the day.  I was listening to Stingray music on one of my older boxes. The test was extremely loud and there's no way to turn it off with the older boxes, so I turned down the volume.  Unfortunately, the test was repeated several times and after the third time, I turned the box off. I have no idea how many more times the test ran.

Since the system was used quite recently, I see no reason for the testing either.  This is nothing more than an annoyance that people will ignore.  This should be done via texts to cell phones and there should be an opt-out option for amber alerts. Red alerts for things like earthquakes, tornados, etc are fine, but amber, there should be an opt-out option.
