If I suggested we should all start learning sign language, that would be over the top, as you put it.  I'm getting the impression that there are differences in equipment affecting the volume and differences in the amount of hearing loss individuals have to begin with.  This was definitely not just a LITTLE loud--it was painful, and the next morning I still have the ringing in my ears.

And it only took  your Dad an HOUR to recover?  My dog took a couple of hours to settle down.  The mute button didn't work.  I hope I can remember to try other buttons with a 95 pound Doberman on top of me, clawing at me to MAKE IT STOP!!!

This alert system does more harm than good.

Hello @Frenesi

Animals do not like high pitched noises. You should know this as u own a animal. That's why it took the dog a while to calm down. I own a cat and a 10year old picknanigge and yes they reacted but we're fine a couple hours later. Why? Because it's how it is with their ears.

Anyways i won't go into this as again u still aren't getting it. Is the sound a bit high? Yes but contact the CRTC about it. Posting here won't make a difference as Rogers can't do anything

I agree. The noise was so obnoxious I immediately turned my TV off the first & 2nd times it happened. The third time it went off I found the mute button and watched the screen long enough to see that it was an amber alert. But the details were so slow to display I left the room without watching it all. Fortunately this happened while i was watching a recorded pgm so i was able to rewind & not miss anything.

Yes, if you watch live TV you would be knackered. Fortunately I watch recordings almost exclusively.

The question here is, how to turn off the alerts after you're sick of dealing with them. I saw this screen photo posted on the Rogers Facebook page, presumably from a Nextbox with Navigatr.

alert.jpg

I see it uses the whole bottom half of the screen and has "Press (exit) to dismiss this message". Does that work? My 8300 with SARA interface only has a red banner near the top of the screen and no way to dismiss it ("exit" didn't work) but I presume the audio alarm is just as loud and obnoxious. Hey, Rogers, how about updating SARA to kill these alerts?

It's also ironic that this was a false alarm after the boy was reported missing and then someone saw his father picking him up and thought it was an abductor. So it looks like Rogers, the CRTC and the OPP has some work to do.

Earlier in this thread a poster remarked that complaints had already been made to the CRTC, but it made no difference in the disruptiveness of the alerts.  Maybe you didn't get that.
Thanks to those who made helpful suggestions.

Hello @Frenesi

Oh I read that but again just because one user makes a complaint doesn't mean nothing will happen.

If the user understood it better they and u would know that I order for a company or even the CRTC to a change something thousands need to complain. One or 10 people won't do anything. That's why i am pushing everyone to complain to the CRTC who mandated it and not Rogers.

Yeah, on the Navigatr, the exit DOES work to exit it.

Obviously they werent able to do it the same way, programming wise on the SARA ones as vs the newer ones.

On the DTAs, apparently it did a channel change, since there is no menu, etc.
But may have locked up the DTA as well it sounds like.

Just so you don't have to search around, this is where you complain to the CRTC.

https://services.crtc.gc.ca/pub/rapidsccm/Default-Defaut.aspx

I would suggest reducing the volume and duration of the audio alert signal and making all BTUs add a "dismiss" option to all DTA and STB interfaces that don't now have it.

Do you know what is really a lot of fun? Paying for a movie with tons of action in it and you have your stero cracked up for that theatre experince. When the sound blast came on I thought my speakers were done. And my wife freaked out because it hurt her ears.

according to the news, the alert didn't follow protocol and shouldn't have interrupted the tv show

Last night before I found this forum--after some searching--I tried contacting tech help by phone and found that there was roughly a two hour wait time.  I doubt that's typical even on a Sunday night, so this issue impacts Rogers on various levels.

This is the email I wrote to the CRTC, in case anyone wishes to copy & paste:

________________________________

Last night an Amber Alert was broadcast over the television. The alert noise was so loud I believe it would cause hearing loss--the next morning I still had a ringing in my ears from the blast, which was as loud as a smoke alarm but more piercing in its frequencies.

I was forced to turn my television off as quickly as possible. The noise caused my dog to panic, and I have to say that someone with a baby in their home would be distressed to carry the child outside to get away from the noise. The volume and frequencies are harmful.

Needless to say, an alert of this disruptiveness is counterproductive at best.

Please modify these alerts.

I wonder if contacting an MPP would help.

So it was a screwup on behalf of the OPP issuing a Red Alert, which should be reserved for national emergencies. Let's hope someone gets severely reprimanded. Looks like any low level helper in a police station should not have access to the Big Red Button.

Edit -

After listening to this podcast it appears that the alert was probably deployed by some clown in Ottawa, not the local OPP and it affected 40-50 million TV viewers, well beyond just Ontario, Since it's Ottawa, nothing will probably happen. There's a lot worse coming out of there these days. Smiley Mad

The National Alert Aggregation & Dissemination System is run by Pelmorex Communications Inc.  They also operate the Weather Network and MétéoMédia.  From their website:

"Pelmorex’s NAAD System collects public safety messages from authorized government authorities and distributes those messages by satellite and through the internet to broadcasting undertakings such as radio and television stations, cable and satellite TV companies and other last mile distributors (LMDs). There is no charge by Pelmorex for these services."

It would appear that they have offices in Oakville and Mississauga.

This is part of the response from the CRTC:

The alerting system, and how it is used, is the responsibility of the federal body, Public Safety Canada, along with the Emergency Management Organizations (EMOs) in the provinces and the territories.  These organizations have created and approved the guidelines and standards that are used, including how the alerts appear and sound.  This is not the responsibility of the CRTC or the broadcasters who deliver the messages.  The CRTC’s role is restricted to ensuring that the broadcasting industry participates in the emergency alert system, as overseen by the EMOs, in co-operation with Pelmorex, the system operator.

They didn't seem to take my point about the counter-productiveness of deafening people.

Word for word the same canned response I got. It does not address the breaking of protocol by somebody and substituting a Red Alert for an Amber Alert.

It seems pointless to show these alerts on my TV at home. If I'm at home how can I look out for the lost person, a certain car or whatever. In the past 5 minutes I've had 2 alerts and they interrupt my viewing.

If these get so annoying no one is going to read them anyway. It seems to me a very poor solution to trying to inform the public. If it was for major weather alerts or other emergencies that happen only once or a few times a year then this system would make sense.

Obviously not everyone is able to "exit" or dismiss the alert. Which will cause people to walk away or turn off the tv and maybe consider that an hd antenna and streaming  show wouldn't have this constantly on my screen. You put the alert up, then allow me to acknowledge with a button after a set amount of time assuring the viewer has read it, say 30 seconds. Then go away. I've been watching an alert about a baby being kidnapped no where near me for the last 30-45 minutes right across the top of my screen. I read it once and remember, I didn't retain the licence because I'm IN MY LIVING ROOM so it's pointless to retain that info. The "alerts" are actually a good idea the implementation is dumb without an exit button.

The alert that triggered this thread was an amber alert that the agency responsible for broadcasting these inappropriately changed to a red alert. There was a lot of backlash and hopefully severe reprimands. You're never likely to see a fake one like this again, or people WILL start ignoring them. Believe you me, in the event of a REAL red alert, you won't want to be just sitting there watching your TV.

As an FYI, this is a new alert today. Based on feedback elsewhere, apparently the loud sound is not there and the notices are slightly different?

I saw this on the web a couple of hours ago and was wondering if there would be another "emergency".  I have not turned on my TV for the evening yet...

Okay, I saw several versions of that alert on social media earlier today, but didn't have the TV on.  Amber Alerts like that, if broadcast, would be a crawl along the top or bottom of the screen, similar to tornado warnings.  They're usually broadcast by the TV networks or stations, unlike the Red Alert with the loud audio alarm that was on all cable networks. An Amber Alert isn't supposed to be really intrusive.

@Headfake did you get today's alert on your TV and was it so intrusive you had to leave the room and it was impossible to continue watching your program?  Was it the same across all channels like the Red Alert was?

There is still a red bar on our Rogers PVR 3500.  Also the amber alert seems to mess up control operation on the on-demand channels.
