Hitron CGN3 only works for Destiny (Xbox360) in bridge mode

Hi, I'm not too sure about posting this here but I need some help.

I play Destiny on the Xbox 360 and have recently switched to Rogers Ignite60 internet. I use a wired connection to my Xbox. I had no problems playing with my old ISP and gateway modem.

Since switching, I cant play for even 10 minutes without being disconnected from the game servers. This game is sort of known for having connection issues..but not like this. I have talked to at least 8 different people having no problems.

I have tried port forwarding my Xbox, I have tried putting it in a DMZ, I have tried turning my gateways firewall off, and nothing helped except for putting my CGN3 gateway into bridge mode, which is not a solution as I need the wireless capabilities for other devices.

I understand I can buy my own router to solve this, but when my old provider's gateway worked just fine I see this as a waste of money to compensate for Rogers' poor hardware or whatever is going on here.

Any help is appreciated, maybe I am missing a setting on my gateway that would cause this? Other games seem to play fine, though I will be suddenly disconnected from Xbox Live once every couple hours, which also has only started happening since switching to Rogers and this Hitron gateway.

Can you log into the modem, navigate to the STATUS.....DOCSIS WAN page, copy the downstream and upstream tables and paste them into this thread.  Those tables contain the RG-6 signal levels and signal to noise ratios which might show some type of problem.  Was your previous ISP internet connection via DSL or Cable?

 

There is an ongoing issue with latency to and thru the CGN3 series modems which Hitron and Rogers are currently working on.  Unfortunately there is no eta for the firmware fix.

My previous internet was DSL from Bell. If it makes a difference, the modem is actually an CGN3ACSMR.

Here are my down and upstreams, though if it makes a difference my modem has been factory reset since the last time Ive logged into the game and had these problems.

The signal levels on the downstream are a little low, but that shouldn't cause any problems.  The Signal to Noise levels are fine and the upstream signal levels are fine as well.  Unfortunately you have the CGN3ACSMR, which is definitely having problems at this point in time.  There are two issues on the go at the moment, 1. the latency to and thru the CGN3 series modems, 2. an issue specific to the CGN3ACSMR and League of Legends, where users either can't connect to the game or end up getting kicked off the game.  The interesting thing is that Destiny is the game that is giving you the most problems.  Does the xbox only ever use one particular set of ports for port forwarding or does that ever change according to the game?  Are you able to easily determine that and if so, can you have a look at Destiny and a game that works and see if there are any differences in the ports that are used and post what you find.

 

One possible solution is to swap your modem for a CGN3 and see if that resolves the issue.  The price for that however is giving up the 802.11ac capability and running into the problem with the CGN3 2.4 Ghz network, where it will lock down in data rate to the slowest device on the network, instead of running all devices at their rated wifi data rates, taking into consideration the signal to noise ratios of the wifi channel in use.  On paper, the CGN3AC and presumeably the CGN3ACSMR run the 2.4 Ghz network as it should, allowing each device to run at its max wifi data rate available.

This is most likely just the general strict NAT on the cgn series 😞 even with forwarding.

Bridging usually is the best solution to this unless/until they fix it.

Thanks for the replies. Im not sure how to check the ports in use, but Destiny's networking troubleshooting recommends to foward the same ports that Microsoft/Xbox says to, so I assume its just the one set of ports.

I'll try to get a different modem from Rogers, reading around here there's a chance I can get a Cisco without these issues? Otherwise I'll have to choose between buying my own router or getting slower internet from Bell but a better gateway I guess.

Hey mmont,

 

You mentioned that it seems to work in gateway mode so your issues are likely related to the NAT/bridging issues the other posters have mentioned. However, like you mentioned in your post Destiny is a game which has a reputation of having connectivity issues. I used to play Destiny on Xbox One a few months ago, and I experienced "the Noah's ark" of disconnect messages which you are probably familar with. If I remember correctly, my common disconnet errors were bee, fly, lion, and zebra. In the end I was able to solve my issues, so you might want to give this troubleshooting a try. Even though you are playing Destiny on Xbox 360, I think some of these troubleshooting steps should be of use to you.

 

What I discovered is Destiny is a game which is very sensitive to network latenency and packet loss. My issue was hard to track down as the issue would come and go. However, any time I would get disconnected I would see other issues in the house such as sluggish webpage browsing on my PC. 

 

What I started doing was running a continous ping test on another computer in the house. In windows, if you go to Start > Run and type "ping -t www.google.com" it will bring up a command line window which will constantly ping google. When I would get disconnected from Destiny, I would go to the ping window on my computer and would see "request timed out" messages. While the ping isn't pinging the servers you are connecting to for Destiny, they can be used as a general indicator that you are receiving packet loss on your connection.

 

The root causes for my issue were two-fold:

1) I was connecting my Xbox One via wifi on the 2.4GHz spectrum. In the house we also had a baby monitor using the same frequency and would cause interference when it was on. You mentioned that you are wired, so this should not affect your Xbox 360.

2) When using computers with full wired connectivity, I would still experience packet loss at certain times of the day. To this day I don't fully understand why this was happening, but eventually Rogers sent a tech to my house to review the setup. What seemed to address the issue was connecting our cable feed to another card in the central box in our neighboorhood.

 

For what it's worth, I very recently switched over to the Ignite 250u plan using a Hitron CGN3. I played Destiny for about 5 minutes (not much of a test) with an out of the box setup and it seems to work fine.

Thanks Aelph. My xbox's network statistics tell me I have a 1% packet loss and 76ms latency, as opposed to 0% and about 30ms on my previous ISP. Hopefully a modem swap will sort this out.

Do you use the wifi on the modem, and if so, just for test purposes, try turning it off and see if the max ping time comes down at all. 

 

If you swap modems for something like the Cisco DPC-3825, that will limit your max download rate compared to what you can use with any of the Hitron modems.  But, for test purposes, it will be interesting to see if the ping times come down at all.  If not, then the issue is with the node that your modem runs off, and the network beyond it.

I would run your xbox network statistics test a few times to see if that remains consistent. When I was having issues, the packet loss would vary anywhere between 3% and 40%.

If you call rogers support and tell them you are experiencing packet loss, they can perform tests ping tests on their side to confirm if there is an issue with your end or with the neighbourhood (if packet loss is the issue).

Yeah, im pretty mad this is really annoying. I get this modem/router today, have my own set-up going with x2 apple airport extremes, got home, plugged everything in, turn on Bridge mode, internet working fine.. go to play destiny having same issues. 

 

So, even if you have your own router do not waste your time. Also my net package use to be like 2mbs up and 28mbs down now it 100 and 10 but when i run my xbox internet stats,  I have the same 1% loss which never existed before.

 

Quite honestly, I don't know why you make us get a new modem within 5 days of a new package or we will be penalized yet I follow everything you ask and I get messed over in the end. Soooo fed up. Make me fix something that isnt broken and worked just fine, nothign was wrong with my SMC and nothign in my house uses AC wifi nor does any internet package you provide make it worth having. 

 

I mean hey, if you find a solution im all ears. but to hear "Oh the firmware isnt ready."

I 100% agree that these firmware issues should have been dealt with before it was released, etc.

But there ARE reasons to going to these series of modems.

 

Your SMC is a 4 channel modem.  While i beleive it could do up to something like 300mbps.. to technically could handle the new package speed wise.. it would be HOW WELL.
As more and more people are wanting MORE speed.. to provide that all at the same time.. the existing channels start to get crouded.. and can get slowdowns.
Going to these new ones, they are 24 channel.. almost all but eliminate that problem.

 

But they do have OTHER problems.
MOST people though, are able to bridge and it resolves MOST.

 

Hitman100, it sounds though like you have the CGN3ac unit.. i would see if you can swap it with the regular CGN3.. its rock solid in bridge... vs the AC model is having issues at the moment.

Hi I currently switched from the ladybug modem to a higher plan 100mb . I have my xbox one hooked up and I keep getting disconnected every few minutes this happens in fifa 15 as well other games run fine . My nat is open everything is running smooth . I switched 3 modems and had 3 techs come and I still get kicked how can this be happening my old modem was fine . Anyone got any solutions.???

I'm having the same issues o have the advanced wifi one and I can't seem to stay logged in destiny long eneugh , rogers said I can switch to the rocket one but I'm not sure if that will fix my issues . Some advice would be appreciated

The key to getting a good gaming experience with Destiny (and any game really) breaks down to 3 areas:

 

  • Low latency connection
  • 0% packet loss
  • Proper port forwarding (or equivalent)

If you are using an Xbox One you run a test to see these details. From the main dashboard screen press the start button, go to Settings > Network > Detailed Network Statistics. On the Xbox 360 this is under System > Network > Network Statistics (I don't have a Playstation 3/4, sorry. There should be something similiar). When this runs it will show your latency, packet loss, and NAT type. What you are looking for is the following:

 

  • Latency under 120ms depending on location. The lower this number the better.
  • 0% packet loss
  • NAT type as "Open NAT"

Make note of your results and run the test a few more times. On each subsequent test, you are looking to see if your results remain consistant. Based on the results, here would be your next steps:

 

  • If your packet loss is not 0%, we need to identify the source of this. Are you wired or wireless? If you are wired, can you try a new cable? If wireless, can you try using a cable? Could your wireless connection be experiencing interference (i.e. microwave nearby, cordless phones, baby monitor)? Is your network connecting being heavily used (i.e. downloading large files, roommate running torrents)?
  • If your latency values are fluxuating wildly (i.e. more than 15ms difference between tests), then this may be an issue. Is your network connecting being heavily used? Can you share the DOCSIS WAN readings from the router?
  • If your NAT type is not "Open NAT" you need to address this. If you are using an Xbox, check out http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/networking/nat-error-solution. I don't have details for PS3/4, sorry. You can check out http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps4/settings/nw_test.html and this might help you. Other work around are to put your Xbox/Playstation into your routers DMZ, or to enable uPNP/NAT-PMP on your router.

If your issue is intermittent, be sure to run this test when you are experiencing the problem. Also to be really clear, the modem experiencing issues with League of Legends/packet loss is the Hitron CGN3ACSMR. The Hitron CGN3 modems don't seem to have the same firmware problems (but also don't have 802.11AC wireless support), so you may want to double check your model number.

I have been trying for the last 2 weeks to fix my Destiny "contacting servers" issue. I have tried contacting microsoft and followed all of their instructions also my service provider. I am aware about the upgrade but tell me does the firmware upgrade fix anything? Because so far its only Destiny that seems to be effected by this. Any thoughts?

The update does not fix everything.  It addresses the latency through the modem and the problem specific to League of Legends. It also appears to stabilize data rates for Twitch and World of Warcraft. PS3 and PS4 consoles appear to be an issue at this time with the CGN3ACSMR, in which case the CGN3 appears to be the modem of choice.   There is a comment from another forum member using XBL, which I believe is XBox Live, who indicated that the update "......seems to have fixed all my gaming issues I am on XBL and now I have no lag connect to parties right away and find games in a second......"  Somewhere within the recent threads is a comment regarding Destiny which I will attempt to locate.

 

Are you playing on an xbox (I'm assuming yes here)?

 

There is another forum member playing Destiny on an Xbox, but i haven't seen a post from him indicating whether or not the update solved the issue specific to Destiny.

Hey I don't know if you have found a solution to your probelm yet but I'm in the same boat as yourself. The problem is with the CGN3AC modem. I spoke to an agent yesterday and they told me about a firware update that will roll out today. He told me at the moment they are rolling it out to customers whom are calling in with Ping and Latency issues but it will be a wide release soon. Hang in there as I know exactly how you feel.

In addition to confirming which gaming platform (be as specific as possible) you are using, can you elaborate on your "contacting servers" error? Is this just when you launch the game?
