Cannot call local numbers while roaming in Japan?

I am currently roaming in Japan. No problems calling home, but calling local numbers here in Japan doesn't seem to work. I have tried with and without the area code and country code, but no success. All those calls are dropped, with or without announcement. Can anybody tell me what I should do to make local calls?

Re: Cannot call local numbers while roaming in Japan?

Here is some information I found

Use this dialing pattern when calling overseas from outside Canada :

  • "+" sign + country code + AC + NXX + ID
  • You should use "+" to replace the country exit code. In North America, 011 is used, but other countries use different codes. By using "+"

It says the Japan country code is 81

So try holding 0 to get the + sign then 81 and then the area code + number you are trying to call

Hi @MH_V

Welcome to the Community Forums. Smiley Happy

Sorry to hear that you’re having trouble using your phone in Japan. Smiley Sad

What type of device are you using? Is the device unlocked and if so, are you using a local SIM card?

Are you able to send text messages or use data on your device?

Re: Cannot call local numbers while roaming in Japan?

Thank you for your reply. I have an unlocked iPhone 6 and a Rogers Pay As You Go SIM. I have asked my family back in Canada to call the Pay As You Go 1-800 number, and from what I just heard, the techs tried to "reset the network" several times, but it has not helped.

Re: Cannot call local numbers while roaming in Japan?

Hi @MH_V

Could you try selecting another network provider in Japan to see if it makes a difference? To do so, follow the steps below

  1. Enter Settings
  2. Select Carrier
  3. Turn off Automatic
  4. Allow the phone to search for carriers
  5. Select a different one

Also i know from personal experience alot of people use the "how to call abroad" website. If you do a google search on it, it should be the first hit. Verify you are using the correct codes for the correct areas.

Did you confirm their is an available balance on your account? also that no blocks are on the account?

Hope this helpsSmiley Happy

Re: Cannot call local numbers while roaming in Japan?

Thank you for your suggestions.

I have tried different carriers, but no success yet.
No balance or block issues.

Been able to call Rogers using Skype using a local WiFi network. They were very friendly and spent a lot of time trying to diagnose the issue (Thank you!); however, I'm still stuck.

What I learned is this:
1 the Rogers partner here is Softbank, not Docomo.
2 using the 0 at the beginning is causing the Call Failed message on the phone; 0 should not be used, according to Tech Support
3 a special dialling code is required, but what this code is was not known
4 the destination carrier makes no difference (i.e., calling a NTT number or a Softbank number from my phone on Softbank both result in failure)
5 I can be called from a local phone (they dial 0101+my number), but I cannot call back the number that appears on the screen.

If anybody knows what the dialling code/procedure is, please do post it!

Re: Cannot call local numbers while roaming in Japan?

Very odd, not sure why it's not working.

Have you tried resetting your network settings?  Also do you get any message when trying to make the calls out? I see you mentioned the calls drop, could you provide a little more detail?

When you make the call on your iPhone does it switch from "calling" to the "timer(00:01) then you hear "dead air" and the call drops? or does it not even connect?

Last resort would be sending in a ticket for the issue, but that could take a few days and im not sure how long you will be in Japan.
