Blocking Unwanted Callers - Telemarketer's/Scams

Broadish80
I've Been Here Awhile

I've been receiving a large number of unwanted calls from telemarketers and scams (the free trip, credit card calls) on my Rogers Iphone. I don't give out my number, no do I use it that often, but the increasing number of calls is becoming annoying.

I was shocked to discover that instead offering to block these numbers Rogers CHARGES to block the numbers from each of their customers phones. I work with a dozen other people with Rogers phones around me and all of them of received calls from the same number every day or 2. So obviously the problem isn't just me, its occuring to a lot of people. So instead of globally blocking this number, they insist on charging each person, a $5/month fee for a couple of key strokes on a server and backing up their service rather than charging for something else that should be included.

We pay taxes, and the city cleans the streets, and plows snow... rent a phone from Rogers and they want even more money to clean up the trash that exists on their network....

Does anyone know of any other method of blocking calls, I've read some reviews on apps available, but they all look like faked/scammed applications as well?

CallManager. This is free with Rogers when you do a new price plan but its $5 a month. It blocks any number you put it & it blocks private & unknown numbers as well.
" Call Manager allows you to set up usage rules for all of the phones on your account. That means more control of your family's voice and messaging usage and your spending.
You can quickly and easily create usage rules on-line based on:

Time of day (no calls during school or after 9:00pm)
Day of the week
Specific Dates
Area codes or specific phone numbers (calls to family members only)

Call Manager is $5.00/month for every phone number you'd like to set up rules for. Your first 2 months are FREE"

FYI, its only fREE for plans that people are paying the  GRRF or what ever that stupid fee is called.

only other option, is to JUST DONT ANSWER THE CALLS.

Re: Blocking Unwanted Callers - Telemarketer's/Scams

Typical response... pay MORE.

As the original post asked, why should we pay more to block unwanted calls?  I am paying for a service and someone is abusing the service.  That is ROGERS responsibility to stop the calls!

I just wasted 2 hours of my life with ROGERS.  First on-line chatting with someone for assistance and at the end of the day, the choices were to change my number (which I have had for over 20 years) or pay for the call manager feature.  Then on the phone with a representative who suggested I contact the Canadian Marketing Agency and have them remove my number from their list.  Well, wouldn't you know it?  The Canadian Marketing Agency doesn't even handle phone numbers, they only handle mailing addresses!!!!!!

I'M NOT PAYING MORE!  It's like buying a Coke and then paying more to drink it!  What don't you get about that ROGERS!!!?!??!

Thats what people dont understand.

With your phone.. you are paying for a service. yes.

You are paying for the service, of being able to SEND and RECEIVE calls.

Are you able to do that? Yes.

Then you are getting what you paid for.  WHO makes those calls.. is not rogers responsibility.

Re: Blocking Unwanted Callers - Telemarketer's/Scams

Probably just a scam text.. spammed out.. calls all #;s in a range.

Re: Blocking Unwanted Callers - Telemarketer's/Scams

So yeah.. like so many people I have been getting daily scammers calling and texting my number. Its playing havoc with my sleep. For some reason I couldnt get the Rogers 1  link to bring me to where I am supposedly able to block numbers even with the help of a rogers representative as he believes the site has been updated than his version or something along those lines. So I broke down and payed for the 5 dollar call manager add on but cannot seem to access that as well. Can anyone give me a step by step walk through for either process.

Regards,

Robert

Hello RobertB1122

Call Manager needs to be used with a older browser as the new ones won't work. Its not been updated to work with the new updated browsers. Unfortunately Rogers doesn't see this.

Even if u block those numbers per say, they are automated so u will get the same calls / text messages via a different number unless u want to block someone for harassing you or something.

If you phone has a built in call block, you can do it via that way

I Plan to Stick Around

Hello,

The Call & SMS Filter that came with the Nokia Amber update is one of my favourite features.

I regularly receive calls from a recorded message indicating that I've won a free cruise and all I have to do is fill out a survey.    The calls come from a multitude of area codes and phone numbers but they do sometimes repeat the numbers used. Every time I get a new number I add it to the filter.   These calls are part of a scam that other people have reported on various forums.

Thing is, whomever is calling from these numbers sometimes does not hang up and the recorded message goes to my voice mail.  The number is blocked and my phone doesn't ring, but I receive a notification that I have new voice mail only to find out it's the stupid survey again.

Does anyone know if there is a setting where calls from blocked numbers are met with a busy signal instead of going to voice mail?   If it doesn't exist, it's one option I'd love to have.

Re: Blocking Unwanted Callers - Telemarketer's/Scams

iOS 7 for the iphones, now has that feature as well, to have its own built in blocker.

Hello Element

The problem is even when putting it on block, sometimes it will go into voicemail. In that option, is there a setting you are able to change it?.

Why did this post get moved out the Windows Phone sub-forum?  This is a Windows Phone feature.  It is not a general Rogers feature.

I'm Here A Lot

Currently Rogers has created a new system that would do what you are requesting. It is a free service called Rogers One Number, It would allow you to block incoming calls from certain numbers as well as alot of other features. I would recommend checking into this service if you are looking for a call blocking service.

Hello Caithloki

While that is true, please do keep in mind that Rogers One number has a lot of issues going on lately and it won't sometimes work on some plans and phones and cause issues. Please look at their section to see all this. Other then that it's a good product to use.

I have read into Rogers one number.  Most of the issues are with registration as long as the browser being used is up to date along with Java and other applicable software.

Hello Caithloki

You may be a Rogers Live Chat agent but you may not know all the problems with it. Please do remember that most reps have no way of knowing about problems as they don't research or be told. Howard's forums, Rogers community forums for Rogers One has plenty of people complaining and have issues. Now i am not say it's a garbage app but it does have its problem even if u have up to date software and java.

Re: Blocking Unwanted Callers - Telemarketer's/Scams

with most phones .. even including some land lines , you can add a line to automatically be sent to voicemail , which for most scams just causes them to hangup.

On a cell phone/smart phone , just make a contact called ignored numbers.. add the annoying numbers and click the send to voicemail button , which will make the call come through for about 1 second before going to voice mail.. no ringer will happen.

On some land line phones you can do the same thing..  more difficult , but some do have the feature , would have to look at your manual to see how to do it.

As for paying 5 bucks a month for this feature..  bah.

Best bet is if you see a number you do not know which is either long distance or unknown/private , do not pick up.

Most scams and autocallers work by attempting a call to all numbers.. if the number does not pickup on the first attempt it is removed from the list.. if you do pickup , your number stays on the list , which can stay on list for anywhere from a month to 1000 millions years.

If you get the calls often , say twice a day , before 8am , or after 9pm , or if its a scam attempting to collect information such as your name , address, social security number.  Call the cops , not 911 but the non emergancy number.   They will direct you to a toll free number that deals with phone scams , you can give info to them , they do stop these things ,  might take them a while but they do.

Hello odanhammer

While the police will do that. They will need all your info, access to your phone records ( To make sure its numbers that called you & see if those are spamming callers or not). This takes 1-2 months. I have dealt with it for my family & still Duck Cleaning still calls even tho i have called the Toronto Police ( non emergency number) twice & filed a report. Cases got closed & they still call. They told me to contact the CRTC & BBB to be dealt with as they are not threatening me or my family basically

Good luck trying to find Call Manager on this website.  Good luck on trying to set it up.  I understand you must have a microsoft/windows mail account.  If not, no go.  Also, it doesn't work if your 'puter is Windows 8 or higher.................

The 2 months of total frustration I went through with Rogers on this problem just isn't worth the money I'm saving for my wireless home phone.   How can they offer something their technology can't even support.  I didn't even get a refund for the service I couldn't use.  I'm so done.
