5G Network not broadcasting

PammieTee
I've Been Here Awhile

I upgraded to HF150 in January a couple mos. back.

After awhile I noticed my speed slowing down again.... The 5G broadcast is no longer showing on my laptop. When I try to create the connection from my Network Sharing centre (windows 😎 it says the network already exists.

I'm only getting speeds up to 50mbps for download... When I pull up the Connection software from the EasySetupKey, I can SEE the 5ghz network on there.

Not overly savvy with networking issues and was wondering if someone could help me out.

Re: 5G Network not broadcasting

Hello @shane_90,

Thank you for your post and welcome to the Rogers Community Forums! 😃

I always try to connect to the 5G network whenever its available so I can imagine how annoying it must be for you to have to jump through hoops just to get connected to it.

Are you only having issues on your MacBook, or are there other devices that also have issues connecting to 5G? Is the new modem installed in the same location as your old one? When you are finally able to connect to 5G is the signal strong or are you missing bars on your devices?

We look forward to your response!

RogersTony

Seems to be happening on my iPhone as well, I just don't notice it as often as I have cell data to fall back on.

New modem is installed in the same place, and once I'm connected it has full signal and good speeds

Re: 5G Network not broadcasting

Hey @shane_90,

Thanks for getting back to us. Can you check the current firmware your modem is running? You can check on the loaded version by logging into the modem and on the Status page which is displayed, look for the Software Version (Firmware) that is loaded. If it isn't 2.0.10.34T6, please do a factory reset of the modem.

Kind regards,

RogersCilio

Hi,

It's already 2.0.10.34T6

Re: 5G Network not broadcasting

Hello @shane_90,

Since you are on the latest Firmware we will need to take a look at the settings on your modem to see if there is anything that could be impairing the 5G signal and run a few more tests. Please send a Private Message to @CommunityHelps so we can pull up your info and get started on this. If you are not familiar with our Private Messaging system please click here.

We look forward to your message! 😃

Re: 5G Network not broadcasting

I'm wondering if your wifi passphrases use special characters, which the Hitron modems seem to have issues with.  There have been updates previously to address this, but, i don't know if all of the character based issues has been addressed.

You could run a simple passphrase for test purposes to see if that makes any difference.

Re: 5G Network not broadcasting

5G is on but isn't appearing on ANY device since yesterday

I'm not a networking expert but I'll call myself a computer "power user".

I have a CGN3AMR Router, hardware version 1A, software version 4.5.8.33.

In my router's settings (accessed by typing 192.168.0.1 into a web-browser) I have both the 2.4G and 5G networks turned on. Sometime between yesterday and today the network for 5G disappeared from the list of available networks on all my devices. I used the 5G network on my laptop, Xbox, and smartphone, since I use them in the same room as the router.

I only noticed because my Xbox is no longer connected to the internet, and looking for the 5G network on all my devices yields no results. I even downloaded a WiFi analyzer app on my phone to see the relative strength of all the wireless networks in range and on what band they operate.

The reason I point out my network inexperience is because the only thing that's happened (that I know of) since yesterday is a Rogers truck was on my street this morning for a few hours, and in that time the internet would cut in and out.

I'm really at a loss for who to even direct my troubles to.

Re: 5G Network not broadcasting

@TroyJasper are you still having problems with the missing 5Ghz wifi network?  If you haven't done it already, restart/reboot the modem.  Pull the power, wait for 10 to 15 seconds and plug it back it.  See if that cures the problem.  If not, log into the modem and cycle the 5 Ghz wifi, On, Off, On, saving the change every time that you change it.

In a worst case scenario, although its a pain to reset the modem, run a factory reset on the modem .... ADMIN .... DEVICE RESET .... Factory Reset.

I'm Here A Lot

Thanks for your advise. Powering dividend and up the modem always resolve the disappearing 5GHz network. Problem is that it happens every several days and it disrupts Internet access for 10 to 15 mins. Did anybody in Rogers support spent any time to figure out and resolve the problem?

Re: 5G Network not broadcasting

Hello, @Peca.

I appreciate posting the 5 GHz network disappearance in the Community. I can imagine the disruption it can cause. It would be helpful if you could provide more details.

What's the model of the modem? Like CODA-4582 etc.
Does the 5G network disappear from all the devices as if it's not broadcasted?
What's the status of the 5G WiFi light on the modem when the network disappears?
Do you have another router or extender etc. connected to the modem?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Cheers,

RogersMoin

Re: 5G Network not broadcasting

Hi @RogersMoin ,

Thanks for your prompt response.

I have CODA-4582U modem with the most up to date firmware version 2.0.10.36T6. When 5GHz network disappears, all devices downgrade to 2.4 network. Also, Rogers Wifi app shows 0 devices connected. I don't have any other router or extender on the network. I haven't noticed if 5G router light is on or not. I'll pay attention next time this problem happens.

Regards

I'm Here A Lot

Hi @RogersMoin, short 6 months later and multiple modem restart, this morning I've reread the thread for outstanding detail, and found that 5GHz light on the modem was lit, even nine of my devices were able to see the network. Reboot helped restoring the service as usual

Re: 5G Network not broadcasting

Hello, @Peca

The 5G network is always the one I choose as well, can't beat those speeds on the 2.4G network.

On August 9th, 2019 an update was pushed to all compatible AC modems to allow for Band Steering. This simplifies the WiFi set up process as it determines the best network to connect to based on signal strength as 5G WiFi has limited range and functions poorly when it is too far away from the modem.

You can find all the info regarding this change in our recent blog post.

I hope this helps!

Re: 5G Network not broadcasting

Thanks @RogersTony , I'll review new functionality link, but the problem I reported is with Modem stop broadcasting 5 GHz network and all devices falling back to 2.4 network, no matter how close the device to modem is.

Regards,

Peca

Re: 5G Network not broadcasting

Hello, @Peca.

Thanks for the info. If the band steering is not turned on and the 5 GHz network stops working, then I would suggest swapping out the modem at the nearest Rogers' store.

You can check the nearest store and call the store before heading to confirm the modem availability. Please remember to take the modem's power supply/cord along with the modem, and you need to have one photo ID on you.

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

RogersMoin

I've Been Around

I can confirm that this issue is persistent with Hitron router, it randomly ceases to broadcast its 5G signal. The Ethernet still works, as does the 2G network. The 2G and 5G each have distinctive names and we've successfully run both types of networks with our existing router and computers/tablets/phones every time we manually reboot it.
Rebooting the router restores the 5G signal but after a while (a couple of hours) it stops broadcasting again. Sometimes the 5G indicator remains lighted, sometimes it goes out when the signal stops. When the 5G stops broadcasting we lose the 5G connection on all our devices: desktop, laptops, and 3 phones.
I have already done many resets and it does not solve the problem.

Re: 5G Network not broadcasting

Greetings and welcome to our Community @tnv!

Have you tried yet to have the modem replaced entirely? I understand you've already done resets but if your 5G network is just dying completely, I would like to explore the possibility that your hardware has become defective.

If you haven't yet swapped it, please PM us @CommunityHelps so we can make the necessary arrangements. If you're not familiar with our PMing process, you can find instructions here.
