I recently upgraded to 250u from hybrid fibre 70, and streaming things like Netflix and Spotify often cut out or are lower quality than before. Netflix's audio in particular is tinnier, less depth to it, and it becomes pixellated. Shomi is unwatchable due to streaming issues. My Xbox One, PS3, etc. all had download speeds of less than 1 Mbps at times, and then later they jumped to 20 Mbps. I couldn't access the admin panel for my router when I upgraded for a couple hours, it would not load or load very slowly.
Nothing else changed. I thought it might be the router so I upgraded to Rocket Modem but it did nothing (except I do get better speeds on surface pro 3 via AC wi-fi). SpeedTest.net seems to show accurate speeds on wired computers + surface pro 3, but I'm getting lower speeds (like 20 mbps) on other devices, but in practice I am getting issues with the internet as described above. Just poorer quality overall, and other weird glitches like sometimes AIM not signing in.
Here is the test results I see some people post but I have no idea what they mean.

The signal levels aren't terribly bad. The downstream is slightly low, the upstream is slightly high, but that shouldn't cause the modem to run slow. Can you run a wired speedtest using http://speedcheck.rogers.com/en.html or www.speedtest.net using the Toronto Telus server. Seeing the wired results will give us a better idea of what the modem should be capable of when you run wireless. Do you use wired or wireless most of the time? Just wondering where you see the slow performance.

This is on my main computer (wired).
However, I have my PS4 and Wii U wired and they only get about 20 to 25 Mbps, which is the same supposed speeds I get on my wireless devices like iPad, Nexus 7. Surface Pro 3 runs on 5 GHz AC and gets anywhere from 70 Mbps to 180 Mbps (differs all the time).
So it seems fine and all, but it's in practice that it has problems.
Also I am on the older firmware.
Ok, so you have the CGN3ACSMR with Firmware Version 126.96.36.199? Can you confirm the modem number by looking at the product sticker at the back of the modem. In that case I would say to wait for Firmware Version 188.8.131.52 to load, and then set up port forwarding as required by the consoles, and then see how the games behave. Now for the wifi, you can check out your wifi environment using inSSIDer which is a wifi monitoring application. The version linked below is the last freebie version. It will monitor 2.4 and 5 Ghz network but doesn't monitor the 5 Ghz ac networks. There is a new version out that will do that on a normal standard 802.11n laptop by reading the transmit headers and presenting the ac networks on the display as well. If you do use ac networks, its worth the $20 US to buy it, and even if you don't, its still worth knowing who else is using 5 Ghz network if you do use those. Depending on what you see with the program, change your 5 Ghz channel to 149 or higher as those channels have a higher allowed output power. Also switch the bandwidth in the 5 Ghz controls to 40 Mhz. The trade-off is wider bandwidth, reduce the range, as the total power output is constant. 40 Mhz wide you can probably get away with, 80 is probably not going to work due to other routers running nearby. One thing to note, the Hitron modems do not support 802.11ac beamforming. Too bad as it can put the modem up into the next level of available wifi speeds.
So, load the freebie version and have a go a looking at which channels are occupied and which are not. You will most likely find that the 2.4 Ghz channels are fully occupied, unless you live in the country, and that there are empty channels available in the 5 Ghz range.
OK but, I didn't have this problem on the older Internet package which is supposed to be slower. That's what I'm wondering, why did these problems start happening after I was upgraded? (On both routers, the new rocket modem and the older one).
I only have one AC device -- The Surface Pro 3. I don't believe the iPad, Nexus 7, or any gaming console, can run on 5 GHz. If it can then maybe I should change them, but to my understanding there isn't many devices that use AC.
Also I did check which channels were most frequently used on 2.4 GHz, and it showed that channels beyond what my modem can use (like 12, 13, 14) are free, but I couldn't select them. So I had to go for channel 3, which was the least occupied next to them.
If you have the CGN3ACSMR with Firmware Version 184.108.40.206 you will definitely have problems. There are two issues, latency to and thru the modem, which is common to all CGN3 series modems. The other issue affects gaming applications, VOIP devices, VPNs and any other application that is latency intolerant. That problem is specific to the CGN3ACSMR. So, if you do have that modem, with its original firmware, its no surprise. The network wide distribution of the firmware that resolves those issues was completed last week, so at this point, anyone who now receives one of these at a Rogers Store, or via Tech install will have to be patient until Version 220.127.116.11 is installed, usually within 48 hours. Wish I had better news on the timing, but its definitely better than waiting weeks for the firmware, as many have done. Any issues that you are having due to the current firmware should be resolved after the version loads and the modem roboots.
On the wifi issue, on 2.4 Ghz networks, there only channels 1,6, and 11 that do not overlap with each other. So, as a result, everyone wants to be on those channels. The result of the overuse of that band is that the mutual interference of the various routers that are operating essentially causes all of the networks to run 20 Mhz wide channels, restricting the data rate that you see. Thats simply from the number of users out there. In my neighborhood, there are at least 35 to 40 other routers that our laptops can see on 2.4 Ghz, which is why I run anything important on 5 Ghz. In that band, there are probably three or four modems or routers up and running, including ours, so that makes a huge difference in terms of the channels available and bandwidth available for higher data rates. My best advice is to move anything and everything that you can to 5 Ghz using 802.11n. No doubt you will have some devices that can only use 2.4 Ghz networks and in that case all you can to is use inSSIDer to find a channel that has the least number of other modems or routers running and that offers the least amount of overlap with other channels.
Fwiw, combo modem / wifi routers such as the Hitron modems don't offer really good wifi performance. Thats just the nature of the product, same for any ISP. For better wifi performance, the solution is a good wifi router with external antenna and gigabit WAN and LAN ports. A good router will make a night and day difference in your ability to use wifi in your home.
The really annoying thing is the audio crackling or popping in streaming video and audio. Is this fixed in the firmware update?
The new firmware has been seen to have positive effects on a good number of applications beyond the targeted League of Legends game. I'm not sure what you are referring to specifically, Netflix, for example? I run a CGN3ACSMR with the updated firmware and we watch Netflix or Shomi. I haven't seen any issues with the video or the audio.
Looking at your previous post, I see that you run a PS4. We've seen mixed comments on PS3s and PS4s with this modem and new firmware. Personal opinion I think the jury is still out when it comes to PS3s and PS4s, but, please give it a go and let us know what you observe when you run games on your PS4.
On some devices, sometimes, I'm getting a download speed of under 1 Mbps and under 1 Mbps upload (in the 0.something range). And this is a wired device I'm talking about. The internet is wildly inconsistent.
It doesn't seem like an issue on my end if those test results are fine and everything was fine before the upgrade.
I don't think it's a firmware problem either since these problems happened on the old router after upgrading Internet to 250u from Hybrid Fibre 70, which didn't have these problems before, and the new router has the same problems as well.
So yeah speed tests will be fine one time and then slow the next, some devices which were fast before are now super slow, and streaming anything (music, videos, even online gaming) can be slow or exhibit things like pixelation for a brief moment and audio crackling or the audio becoming robotic sounding for a second (don't know the word).
Seems backwards that the old internet was more consistent.
Are you in a house, condo, apartment, highrise, etc, etc? If you are getting inconsistent results on wired devices, consider the possibility of something going wrong further upstream, which is why I asked what type of home you have. I'd call into tech support, explain that you are seeing inconsistent speeds and ask the CSR to run a signal check on the modem and to check the node, which is the next device upstream. See what turns up. Anytime you have slow performance, call in and make sure that the incident is logged. That takes a little persistence but in the end it pays off when a history of slow performance is observed. Put tech support on speed dial and don't be afraid to make use of it, again and again if necessary. Please let us know how the conversation turns out.
