Received an unwanted nuisance call lately? Rogers and most Canadian telephone service providers will implement Universal Call Blocking (UCB) as part of a new CRTC mandate to reduce them.   Malformed numbers can appear in many different forms, but caller IDs 000-000-0000 or 111-111-1111 are common examples. Applied at the network level for all Rogers’ customers, UCB will block any incoming call with a caller ID that does not comply with North American or international numbering plans. UCB will not block incoming calls with compliant caller IDs.   To learn how to protect yourself against spam calls, visit our page on Rogers.com .   Want more info on how UCB may impact voice calls?   Texting Shortcuts   You know the keyboard on your BB10 device is great at predicting what you want to say. You can bend this powerful dictionary to your will, too. For example, have your BlackBerry dictionary automatically substitute the text short form “OMW” to read “on my way,” or automatically insert your office address whenever you type “myoffice.” Those are just a couple of examples. Think about the phrases you end up writing out often and create your own texting shortcuts.     Open the   Settings   menu, choose   Language and Input, then   Automated Assistance,   then Prediction and Correction and, finally,   Word Substitution. Ensure the toggle switch for   Word Substitutions   is set to the   On   position. Tap the plus sign in the bottom bar. Enter your shortcut text, followed by your long-form text. Save. (Take heart in the fact that it’s the last time you’ll ever have to write out these words on your BlackBerry.)   Now, when entering text in an email, text message or elsewhere, just type your short form (e.g., “myoffice”) and hit space. Your BlackBerry will replace it with your long-form text – in this case, your full office address.     Sub Me In!   In addition to allowing you to create as many text shortcuts as you can dream up, BlackBerry 10 includes some handy, pre-loaded shortcuts. There are short codes to insert your BlackBerry PIN for people to add you on BBM, to insert the date and time, and more. Here are a select few.   You’ll find others in   Settings > Language and Input > Prediction and Correction   >   Automated Assistance > Word Substitution.   You type: Your BlackBerry changes it to: ld Today’s date lt The current time mypin Your BlackBerry / BBM PIN myver Your BlackBerry model and OS version information mynumber Your phone number     Inbox: Zero (Unread Messages)   For all but the most vigilant minimalist, inbox overload is an unfortunate reality for many of us. There’s a little-publicized trick that can help you tame that seemingly unwieldy mass of unread messages, though: mark messages as “read” prior to a date you choose. So, if it’s July 15 th   and you’ve got 87 unread messages dating back to July 10 th , simply use the Mark Prior Read function to change unread messages from July 14 th   or earlier to read.  If nothing else, your inbox “unread” count will give you a much better idea of what you actually have to deal with.   In the Hub, swipe down to the date at which you want to clean the slate. Tap and hold on the date header. A sidebar pops up. In the sidebar, tap the   open envelope icon. Tap   Continue   to confirm.     Take Control   When you’re listening to music on your BlackBerry, which do you do more often: change the volume or skip tracks? Like most, you probably do a lot of both. Thankfully, you can change the physical volume keys on the side of your BlackBerry to control both the volume   and   the playback.   Here’s how:   Open the   Settings   menu, swipe down to   Main Volume   and select. Swipe to set   Music Shortcuts   to On.   Now, when you’re listening to music, the “up” rocker key will skip forward a track and the “down” rocker key will skip back just by pressing down.
