iphone upgrade scam june 2025

JtClark
I've been around

Recently i had someone contact me via cell phone posing as a rogers sales rep , he had walked me through the process of ordering a phone off of the my rogers app and it had shipped to me via fedex which i recieved . i was instructed to reach out to this phone number when packaged arrived to activate device . during this call i had read out some numbers and they had made it seem like i recieved someone elses phone and sent me a shipping label to send back the phone to a warehouse and that they would contact me in 24-48 hours to update me on the phone that i had ordered. i waited for a call and did not get one so i had reached out to rogers to find out that i was a victim of fraud and now i have this phone on my account that i am financing which i do not posess

honestly looking back there are some red flags i should have noticed but un aware of the consequences i am  now starting the process to report my experience

I have some advice to share, only order a phone when you want to, not when someone contacts you to encourage you to order one.  same with door to door salespeople, only order a product when you WANT to order it, not when someone tells you to order it.  If more people follow this advice, there will be less chances of getting scammed

I'm here a lot

I'm sorry to hear you were targeted by this type of fraud — it's unfortunately becoming more common and increasingly sophisticated.

For others reading this, please be aware that Rogers will never ask you to complete purchases or activations over third-party calls or to ship devices to unofficial addresses. All official communications should come through verifiable Rogers channels (e.g., official emails, in-app notifications, or calls from published Rogers numbers).

If you suspect you've been the victim of fraud:

  • Contact Rogers Support immediately to have the matter investigated and a fraud case opened.

  • Report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) at antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca or by phone at 1-888-495-8501.

  • File a police report, especially if financial loss is involved or personal information was shared.

I appreciate you posting this—raising awareness can help prevent others from falling into similar traps. Stay safe, and always verify before you act when receiving unsolicited calls or instructions involving account access or device handling.
